This paper presents the results from the Bulgarian adaptation of Lie Scale from M. Bond’s questionnaire measuring defense styles and defense mechanisms. 994 subjects between 15 and 56 years participated in the study. All items had an optimal difficulty, and good discriminative power. The factor structure of the scale was confirmed. Its reliability as internal consistency and test-retest reliability is acceptable. The norms were defined for the whole sample, not differentiated by social categories, because there were not any significant differences on the scale score between the social categories of people. There were some significant differences on some items in gender, age sub-groups, family status, and occupation. These differences were consistent with some other authors’ findings when using some other scales measuring social desirability. Language: Bulgaria

Contribution of Self-Esteem and Collective Self-Esteem in Predicting Depression

    Get PDF
This research was conducted with the purpose to examine the relationship among self-esteem, collective self-esteem and depression. Another objective was to study the contribution of self-esteem and collective self-esteem in predicting depression. Beck Depression Inventory (1996), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Inventory (1985) and Collective Self-Esteem Inventory by Luhtanen and Crocker (1992) were used to measure depression, self-esteem and collective self-esteem respectively. Study was carried out on 200 subjects in the age range of 17-23 years, selected from Agra city. The results of the research showed that there was significant positive relationship between self-esteem and collective self-esteem (p .01), significant negative relationship between self-esteem and depression (p .01). It was also found that collective self-esteem was a significant predictor of depression. This research implies that an optimum level of self-esteem and high collective self-esteem not only prevents depression but also enhances the positive aspects of personality

    Get PDF
The main aim of this study is to present the results from a study of the relationship between personality types described by C. G. Jung and emotional intelligence. The investigated subjects were 150 at the age of 18 – 50. The methods of research were MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) - Bulgarian adaptation (Rusinova, 1992) and one psychological questionnaire measuring emotional intelligence -Bulgarian adaptation (Stoyanova, 2008). The received data indicated that the functions of thinking and sensing, and introversion correlated inversely with the factors of emotional intelligence “Sharing emotions and empathy”, “Motivation to overcome difficulties and optimisms” and extroversion correlated proportionally with them. The function feeling correlated proportionally with the factor “Sharing emotions and empathy” and it correlated inversely with the factor “Recognition of nonverbal expression of emotion of the other people”.Language: Bulgaria

Longitudinal Study of Ethnic Discrimination of Young Bulgarians in the Period 2004-2012

    Get PDF
Ethnically based discrimination and its relation to ethnic stereotypes have been discussed. Comparative analysis of the main characteristics of the “old”, “biological” or “traditional” with the “new”, “modern” or “symbolic” prejudice (Pettigrew Meertens, 1995) has been made. The results of a longitudinal study of discriminatory behaviour of young people of Bulgarian origin (n = 942; 347 men and 595 women, mean age 21.3 years) in 5 time intervals: in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012, towards the representatives of ethnic minorities as a whole, Turks and Roma have been presented. The Modern Racism Scale (McConahay, Hardee, Batts, 1981) was applied in two social contexts: personal and community. The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the two substitution contexts in 5 time periods of study. The men discriminated more, in comparison with women, both minorities as a whole, and the group of Roma. The persons surveyed, both with extreme left and with extreme right political orientation, discriminated more in comparison with those with centrist convictions.Language: Bulgaria

The main aim of the present study was to examine the effect of job autonomy upon organizational commitment of employees at different hierarchical level. A study was made on randomly selected 100 male employees who work in different organizations in Agra, who were administered Organizational Commitment Scale (by Allen Meyer, 1990) and Job Autonomy Scale (by Das, Arora, Singhal, 2000). On the basis of median of the job autonomy scores, the sample was divided into two groups (1) high job autonomy group and (2) low job autonomy group and on the basis of hierarchical level, the employees were divided into two groups (1) 50 high hierarchical level employees’ including managers, etc. and (2) 50 low hierarchical level employees, e.g. clerical staff, etc. The 2x2 factorial design was formed for this purpose and four groups of employees were formed (1) high hierarchy, high autonomy group (2) high hierarchy, low autonomy group(3) low hierarchy, high autonomy group and (4) low hierarchy, low autonomy group. A two-way analysis of variance was employed to compare the level of organizational commitment of each of the four groups. There is a significant difference found between job commitment of employees with high and low job autonomy (F = 4.670, p .05). There is a significant difference found between job commitment of employees of high hierarchical group and those of low hierarchical group (F = 40.691, p .01) and significant interaction effect found between job autonomy and hierarchical level upon organizational commitment of employees (F = 6.114, p .05)

The Physiological Processes Underpinning PET and fMRI Techniques With an Emphasis on the Temporal and Spatial Resolution of These Methods

    Get PDF
In this paper the scanning techniques of PET and fMRI are presented and discussed in technical terms. The main focus of this paper is the physiological processes underpinning these techniques and the ways they operate temporally and spatially. Physiological processes captured by these techniques refer generally to the volume of blood in the brain and the concentration of oxygen in the blood. Temporal and spatial resolution in the case of these methods refers to data collection when the brain is scanned. Temporal resolution records the exact time when a cognitive process takes place; spatial resolution demonstrates in what part of the brain such activity takes place. A comparison between these two techniques shows that one needs the other in terms of measuring the blood and oxygen in the brain so clear pictures of cognitive processes and their locations to be obtained. Both PET and fMRI are in use from cognitive neuroscience, for through the measures that they take from the brain, cognitive processes and their locations can be clearly identified and read

Transition Experiences: Perilous Passages or New Challenges? Theoretical and Practical Understanding of Transitions for People With Autistic Spectrum Conditions

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to present a theoretical and practical understanding of transitions in young people with an Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) and to discuss ways in which support can be provided at different stages of their lives. It aims to propose and highlight some practical initiatives which can be adopted in the preparation of micro and macro transitions thus ensuring an understanding of the criteria behind such practices which can further support practitioners in the long-term aim of positive and empowering outcomes. Ashforth (2001, Role transitions in organizational life: An identity based perspective. Mahwah, NJ: Lawrence Earlbaum Associate) proposes four motives: identity, meaning, control and belonging, which are discussed in the context of role-transitions. These transitions can often require an adjustment in an individual’s behaviour and relationships with their environment as well as people around them. Transitions occur throughout our lives and these key times can cause high levels of disorientation and anxiety more so in people with ASC. The impact of a range of transitions is also discussed and suggestions of ways in which individuals with ASC can be supported are also presented through examples of key resources which can be tailored to each individual’s needs

Fraud and Extravagant Life Styles Among Bank Employees: Case of Convicted Bank Workers in Nigeria

    Get PDF
Extensive studies have shown fraud to be pervasive in Nigeria. Findings from numerous studies which investigated the typology and occurrence of fraud in the Nigerian financial institutions show that most fraudulent behaviours occur in the banking industry. The researchers however have marginally examined the lifestyles of people who commit these crimes; as such the current study examined the relationship between fraudulent behavior and extravagant lifestyle among convicted bank employees in Nigeria. A total of 600 participants were used for the study, divided into three samples: convicted bankers, non-convicted bankers, and employees other than bankers. Data was collected using demographic questionnaire and the Extravagant Lifestyle Scale (ELAS). The results showed that the convicted bankers had significantly higher ELAS scores than non-convicted bankers and non-bankers (F(2,597) = 26.94; p .01). The results suggest that fraudsters are likely to have extravagant lifestyles as a result of their fraudulent acts and this is also supported by the findings from the prior studies. The findings have implications for bank management and law enforcement, and as such recommendations are provided
