    Get PDF
The analysis of ecocriticism in literature emphasizes the presence of ecology in literature and the relationship between humans and nature. This paper considers the concepts of anthropocentrism, ecological awareness, and the ecocritical approach to literature as an ecosystem and, through socio-semiotic analysis, explores how signs and representations construct meaning within the picturebook Something Green by Aleksandra Bezmarević-Stević illustrated by Strahinja Simić. The choice of social semiotics and multimodal theory as a theoretical framework for analyzing the picture book was made to achieve a better understanding of the social and cultural aspect of the literary work. The goal is to contribute to understanding how literature can actively promote ecological awareness, especially in the context of children\u27s literature in Serbia, through the analysis of the picture book, besides recognizing and deciphering various socio-cultural symbols. The methods used in this paper are the analysis of four selected spreads within the picture book that are important for understanding the ecological issues the book addresses, and then synthesizing the interpreted symbols offered within socio-semiotic resources and finding their position in the reader\u27s experience. In the conclusion, we will provide a brief overview of the theoretical framework of the paper, revise the analytical part, and express an opinion on understanding the contribution of the picture book to the ecocritical literary category. U zaključku rada napravićemo kratak osvrt na teorijsku postavku rada, revidirati analitički deo i kroz uočene simboličke i značenjske predmete izneti mišljenje o razumevanju udela slikovnice u ekokritičku književnu kategoriju

CARBON FOOTPRINT AND EMISSION REDUCTION STRATEGIES IN MILK PROCESSING PLANTS: TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE DAIRY PRODUCTION SYSTEMS

    Get PDF
Fluid milk production and processing have a significant impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, posing risks to global climate stability. This study aimed to quantify the carbon footprint and identify major sources of GHG emissions in three milk processing plants and exploring strategies for emission reduction. The selected plants, referred to as MP1, MP2, and MP3, represented different capacities. Data collection involved visits and surveys at the dairies, gathering information on energy consumption and fuel usage. Emissions were categorized into three scopes: Scope 1 (direct emissions), Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased electricity), and Scope 3 (optional emissions beyond the company\u27s control). Direct CO2e emissions per unit of processed milk were 83.91, 96.12, and 115.71 kg CO2e /t for MP1, MP2, and MP3, respectively. Emission reduction strategies were proposed, including substituting energy sources with lower GHG potential, replacing refrigerants with lower global warming potentials, improving energy efficiency, and optimizing raw milk procurement and product distribution. It is recommended that milk processing plants establish reduction targets for GHG emissions, focusing on overall emissions and emissions per unit of final product. According to this study, milk processing sectors need to assess and reduce their carbon footprints. Putting emission reduction measures into practice can make dairy production more climate-smart, ensuring the sustainability and effectiveness of milk production

This research was conducted to determine some wild plants consumed as vegetables in Diyarbakir and its close region (Siverek-Karacadağ) and to survey the consumption patterns of these weeds like Akbandır by the local people. Our survey and field studies have began in the spring period (April-May). Gundelia tournefortii L. (Kenger), Ornithogalum narbonense L. (Akbandır), Mentha pulegium L. (Yarpuz), Malva neglecta (Millbelly), Portulaca oleracea subsp. oleracea (Purslane), Nasturtium officinale R. Br. (Sugar), Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medik. (Shepherd\u27s purse), Anchusa azurea Miller (Guriz-Cow), Rheum ribes L. (Light, ışgın) and these plants It has been determined that these plants used for various purposes (food stuffing, salad, frozen winter vegetables). In addition to this research, a survey was conducted on the Akbandır plant with the people working in the collection of this plant in Diyarbakır city center, its districts and its immediate around (Siverek, Karacadağ). It was determined that 100% of Akbandır collectors who participated in the survey did not cultivate these plants, but collected the ones that exist spontaneously in nature. It was observed that 75% of the respondents stated that these plants are gradually decreasing in nature, and 100% of the respondents answered local markets when asked where do you sell these products. With this study, it was tried to create awareness in terms of the importance of other weeds, especially the Akbandır plant, which is consumed as a vegetable in Diyarbakır and its arounds. With the cultivation of these plants, which may face extinction in the future, it is aimed to maintain their contribution to human health and to increase the income of the families who collect these plants, which have economic returns

Grey mold disease on tomato (Botrytis cinerea) is widespread economically important disease all over the world with a very wide host range. This disease used to be controlled with regular fungicide applications, but in recent years, more ecological friendly methods are developed. One of them is development and use of new biofungicides, based on various beneficial organisms. The main goal of the experiments was to study the possibility for biological control of grey mold disease in tomato with the use of the innovative biofungicides Vintec (a.i. Trichoderma atroviride strain SC1) and Serenade Aso (a.i. Bacillus subtilis strain QST 713). Experiments were conducted during 2019 in the region of Bogdanci and the region of Dojran, on tomato hybrids grown in greenhouses. In the untreated variant in Dojran region, the disease severity index on leaves reached very high destructive level of 41.33%, while the disease incidence on the fruits was even higher (46.66%), and in Bogdanci region, a destructive level of 36% dead tomato plants caused by stem rotting was observed. In this disease conditions, both of the tested biofungicides in the region of Dojran showed similar results, with reduction of the disease incidence in fruits higher than 90% (92.86% for Vintec and 90.01% for Serenade Aso). In the region of Bogdanci, the biofungicide Serenade Aso provided significantly lower degree of incidence reduction of stem rotting (81.66%), compared with the biofungicide Vintec, which provided a full protection of 100%, difference which may be related to some beneficial organisms’ preferences that should be investigated in the future

МАКЕДОНСКИОТ ЈАЗИК И ДИМЕНЗИИТЕ АУСБАУ И АБСТАНД, ПРИМЕНЕТИ НА УСТАВНОТО ПРАВО

The article discusses the concepts of Ausbau and Abstand languages and their application to the Macedonian language. It outlines the instances when Macedonian can be seen as Ausbau or Abstand language. At the same time, it also deals with the level of law, specifically with the branch of constitutional law, and shows that the five main reasons for enshrining the language in the Constitution of North Macedonia (national identity, dominance of language, protection of language, consolidation of sovereignty and consolidation of the language in international relations, and foreign policy) correlate precisely with these sociolinguistic concepts. It therefore concludes that it is possible to link certain reasons for enshrining a language as a norm of constitutional law to whether Macedonian is viewed as an Ausbau or Abstand language. The paper contains a classification of these reasons for constitutional regulation based on these two concepts.

Non-financial disclosure and firm performance: Insights from listed consumer goods manufacturing companies in Nigeria

    No full text
In the dynamic landscape of corporate reporting and stakeholder engagement, the significance of non-financial disclosure has gained considerable prominence. As businesses strive for sustainable growth and investors increasingly recognize the value of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors, understanding the nexus between non-financial disclosure and firm performance becomes pivotal. This study endeavors to explore this relationship within the context of listed consumer goods manufacturing firms in Nigeria. The study encompassed a population of 21 listed consumer goods manufacturing firms in Nigeria. The sample size was 21 firms, determined through census sampling techniques. The research spanned from 2013 to 2022. FGLS regression model was used to examine the relationship between the variables studied. The results found that environmental disclosure and social disclosure had a positive and significant effect on the firm’s performance. While governance disclosure had a negative and significant effect on the firm’s performance. This implies that firms that engage in robust non-financial disclosure practices tend to experience better overall performance. The study concludes that non-financial disclosure, encompassing environmental, social, and governance aspects, plays a pivotal role in influencing the performance of listed consumer goods manufacturing firms in Nigeria. Firms are encouraged to enhance their ESG reporting frameworks, aligning with stakeholder expectations and global sustainability trends

The Re-Awakening Role of Social Workers in Policy-Making Following a Global Pandemic: Lessons for Education and Practice

    Get PDF
Social workers have largely contributed to policy analysis and planning since the rise of the discipline’s professional identity. It is through lobbying, policy advocacy and macro-practice that responses about human rights and social justice are crafted and integrated in international and transnational social work practice. Yet, these roles have for a while been suppressed in an attempt to standardise and confine the profession in the limits of a given nation’s legal and social status. Public crises like the recent novel virus SARS-CoV-2, come to force us to rethink what has been the role of social workers before such crises. Are we well prepared to take on these roles again, when for a long while education and practice has shied away from them, leaving contemporary practitioners in a predicament situation? This paper will explore both challenges and opportunities in social policy, arising from COVID-19, and will argue the need for re-emphasising on the social workers’ role in social policy, with the intention to make recommendations for education and practice

VULNERABILITY AND HUMAN RIGHTS: TACKLING SEXUAL AND GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE AGAINST MIGRANTS AND ENHANCING SUPPORT TO VICTIMS

    Get PDF
This paper seeks to improve understanding of the risks and types of sexual and gender-based violence faced by migrants, as well as ways of providing protection and assistance within the mixed migration context in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that over half of women and almost 1 in 3 men worldwide have experienced sexual violence involving physical contact during their lifetimes. Even though the prevalence of sexual violence is high, its exact scope is unknown due to its vast underreporting. Sexual violence against people on the move is widespread. Regardless of age and gender, this population is highly vulnerable to becoming victims of sexual and gender-based violence during their journey toward the desired destination. How the proper activities aimed to prevent and treat the consequences of sexual and gender-based violence in the humanitarian context are set up in Bosnia and Herzegovina and what kind of services are provided to victims will be discussed within the paper. How important the role of humanitarianworkers is, their understanding of sexual and gender-based violence, and their readiness to provide adequate care, recognize the types of sexual violence, and use all the benefits of the existing referral pathway properly will also be broadly explored

The paper analyzes Macedonian and Croatian phytonymic phraseological expressions that are related to the concept of success and failure. The phraseological material on which the research was done is phraseographic – the phraseological expressions are excerpted from the Phraseological Dictionary of the Macedonian language and from the Croatian Phraseological Dictionary. Before the start of the research, the hypotheses were given, which was followed by semantic-conceptual analysis and interlinguistic equivalence analysis of the phraseological material. The aim of the research is to contribute to the study of phraseology of the Macedonian and Croatian language, as well as to the contrastive phraseology of these two languages.
