    Stress Increases Motivation to Work for an Unhealthy Food Item

Perhaps because of this, stress tends to be associated with weight gain and obesity. What remains unclear is whether stress actually increases motivation to work for food. We hypothesized that after a mild stressor participants would be more motivated to work towards an unhealthy food item compared to a healthier food item. Participants came into the laboratory, rated their anxiety and hunger and then either went through a stress condition or no stress condition. They were then given the chance to play a slot machine game where half of the participants worked for an unhealthy food item (M&Ms) and half worked for a healthy food item (grapes) or worked for reading time. During the game, participants clicked the mouse to win points that would earn them portions of food. The number of clicks needed to win a food portion increased exponentially. Preliminary results found that after a stressor, participants in the unhealthy food condition were more motivated to work towards the food rather than reading time. Overall, it seems individuals may be more motivated to work towards unhealthy foods rather than an alternative activity after stress.https://digitalcommons.buffalostate.edu/srcc-sp21-psychsocsci/1034/thumbnail.jp

    Democratic Interventions and Women-Friendly Peace Agreements

    Tai Prescott-Salako, International RelationsFaculty Mentor(s): Professor Mehwish Sarwari, Political Science and Public Administration What impact do democratic interventions have on the adoption of peace agreements with gender provisions? Research shows that third-party interveners shape the behavior of armed combatants during conflict, including their commitment to human rights. Moreover, third-party interventions influence the likelihood of conflict termination and one-sided victory. This project seeks to further explore the effects of foreign interventions by examining their influence on peace processes. Specifically, the study argues that conflicts that receive interventions by democratic governments are more likely to include provisions on gender issues. Democratic states are committed to promoting international human rights norms in the international arena, including gender equality norms. As a result, it is expected that they diffuse their values in the conflict areas in which they are intervening in and influence peace negotiations. This project is divided into three stages. The first stage focuses on collecting data on the presence of gender issues in peace agreements adopted during the period of 1975-1989. While there is currently data available on peace agreements with gender provisions for the post-1990 years, new data is collected for the years prior to 1990. During the second stage of the project, we will build the theoretical framework of the paper.     Improving Mental Health for Inmates at the Erie County Holding Center Tania Miah, Social WorkFaculty Mentor: Professor Tonya Myles-Day, Social Work Tania is a senior majoring in Social Work who is graduating in the spring of 2021. She has a passion for advocating for social justice issues, including those experienced among the prison population. After graduation, she plans to pursue a master’s degree in Social Work at the University at Buffalo and aspires to a career working with children. During her fellowship, Tania created a survey that was administered to the staff at the Erie County Holding Center. Based on her survey results, news articles, and an official report by the prison, she proposed new ideas to help reduce the deaths at the Erie County Holding Center.     The Street Life of Trees: An Urban Guide Jaclyn Chuchanis, Graphic DesignFaculty Mentor: Professor Emerita Carol A. Townsend, Art & Design Jackie is a senior Graphic Design major who graduates this May. Currently, she is employed as a full-time graphic designer at CitiBank in Buffalo. Jackie’s interest lies in creating works with a variety of media, especially those that spark a change or promote the importance of environment. For her fellowship, Jackie created a 64-page softcover book, The Street Life of Trees: An Urban Guide, commissioned by SUNY Buffalo State Friends of the Maud Gordon Holmes Arboretum. This publication showcases Jackie’s art and design work while highlighting the importance of trees and shrubs in our urban environment. Through this project, Jackie learned to lay out a major publication, to professionally discuss and share ideas with her assembled faculty team, and to communicate with a publisher. The Street Life of Trees is currently being sold online at thestreetlifeoftrees.com (new and renewing Arboretum members receive the publication for free).     Three studies were used to develop a brief (5-item) measure of Attitudes Toward the Liberal Arts, based on the original 24-item ALAS (Reid, Kline, & O’Quin, 2014).     Electro-Optical Effects in YbFe2O4 Thin Films

    YbFe2O4 shows interesting physical properties mainly due to its triangular lattice structure occupied by the equal number of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions. Here, we present the optical and electro-optical properties of YbFe2O4 thin films. The electronic excitations in YbFe2O4 display strong temperature dependence and these excitations can also be modified by applied electric fields. The field-induced changes in optical properties (up to ~10%) vary almost linearly with applied electric fields at low temperatures, but they disappear above 120 K. The observed electro-optical effects can be interpreted as the effects of external electric fields on the orbital-charge ordering of Fe ions.https://digitalcommons.buffalostate.edu/fsrcf_nss/1006/thumbnail.jp

    How to estimate true compositions of volatile compounds in headspace determined by solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME)

    The compositions of volatile compounds in headspace (HS) analyzed by a solid phase microextraction (SPME) sampling method usually differ from true compositions mainly because the partition coefficients of these compounds between headspace and a SPME fiber are not equal. In this paper we report an analytical strategy to more accurately quantify relative compositions of selected hydrocarbons present in gasoline residue by employing inverse gas chromatography (IGC) coupled with a HS-SPME sampling method. First, IGC measurements using a column packed with a solid support coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were conducted to obtain the thermodynamic and chromatographic data needed for the estimation of the relative partition coefficients of n-heptane, toluene, and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene (TMB) between headspace and a PDMS SPME fiber at 100 and 130 °C. Then, chemical analysis of headspace containing different compositions of vaporized n-heptane, toluene, and TMB were carried out via a PDMS SPME sampling method at 100 and 130 °C. Finally, the relative compositions of these vaporized compounds in headspace were estimated using compositions from a PDMS SPME sampling method and the relative partition coefficients from IGC. Our results showed that the estimated relative compositions of these compounds in headspace are comparable to true compositions obtained from direct headspace vapor analysis within reasonable relative errors.https://digitalcommons.buffalostate.edu/fsrcf_nss/1009/thumbnail.jp

    Synthesis of Library of N-t-boc Amino ester

    Buchwald–Hartwig Amination (BHA), which establishes C−N bonds between aryl halides and amines via Pd (0)-catalyst, has widely used as an indispensable technique in numerous basic and applied chemistry, such as syntheses of natural products, ligands, and heterocyclic molecules. The synthetic utility of Buchwald Hartwig Amination has emerged primarily due to the shortcomings of other aromatic C-N bond formation synthetic approaches due to functional group intolerance. Using BHA, a large pool of structurally and functionally diverse products can be synthesized in a single step which otherwise requires a multi-step complex synthetic method. Recent advancements in Pyridine-Enhanced Pre-catalyst Preparation Stabilization and Initiation (PEPPSI) Palladium-catalyst has significantly simplified the synthetic utility of BHA that allows the reactions to take place under an ambient condition offering high overall yield. Using Pd-PEPPSI-IPr catalyst, we successfully synthesized a series of N-protected amino esters by coupling a variety of heterocyclic halo-esters and N-protected piperazine derivatives. In particular, we found interesting reaction outcomes while carrying out BHA with a variety of differentially pre-disposed heterocyclic and aryl halo-esters under similar reaction conditions. However, most of the reactions were accomplished without a need of harsh reaction condition. Following the successful synthesis of N-protected amino esters, we are currently testing the compatibility of the molecules for solid-phase peptidomimetic synthesis following saponification and validating the purity of the products using HPLC.https://digitalcommons.buffalostate.edu/fsrcf_nss/1011/thumbnail.jp
