Economic Growth In Haiti
Poverty is a persistent problem in Haiti, resulting in an abundance of famine and suffering for many. The root of poverty and the lack of economic growth in Haiti has been associated with political instability. From this perspective, this thesis investigates the relationship between political instability and economic growth within Haiti. In relation to the same, the question that is raised is “can economic growth promotes political stability?” This research is purposely designed to be qualitative to facilitate the investigation of the source of poverty and its relation to political instability. Case studies on South Korea and China have been conducted in order to determine which policy would best support sustainable growth in Haiti. Accordingly, periods of political stability and instability in Haiti have been reviewed, as well as review of the state of the economy during those times. Furthermore, this thesis examines data, provides analysis on growth theories, and evaluates the key components of political instability. This research collects robust information to provide recommendations for policies on growth and development in Haiti
Remembering Why: Finding Direction in the Face of Unsustainable Collections Practices
Shifts in the philosophy and practices that guide museums have changed the way we collect and what we collect. However, professional standards and expectations related to the management and use of those collections have largely remained unaltered. Museum professionals are repeatedly confronted by the impracticality and near impossibility of achieving accepted professional standards when managing collections. It is clear that the profession needs to rethink the practices and policies that shape our daily work assumptions, but where do we begin? Using Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle as a guide, we will rearticulate our purpose and reexamine the practices that get in our way. I believe that museums are unique in their ability to use objects to tell stories, to make meaning, and to connect visitors with the past, others, and even themselves. Understanding human – object relationships helps us articulate why objects matter to people and why objects really belong in museums. With this in mind we can see how vital it is that our collections become relevant once again; that our collections serve our missions, relate to our audiences, and most importantly have a useful life outside of storage in exhibition and programs. Our goal as professionals should be to enhance our collections’ meaning, vitality, and use, not preserve them into irrelevance. To accomplish this, we need to encourage thoughtful acquisitions, streamline deaccessioning, and simplify cataloging and preservation practices. We must expand the way we talk about and think about objects and make our collections more inclusive
Native and non-native ant impacts on native fungi
Organisms produce weapons for defense against pathogens and competitors. In response, competitors and pathogens develop resistance to these weapons. However, when a species invades a new range, its “novel weapons” may be more effective against native species that did not co-evolve with them. Via specialized glands and microbial associates, ants produce antifungal weapons for defense against entomopathogenic fungi. However, these weapons may have unintended secondary effects on non-entomopathogenic, soil and seed-borne fungi. The antifungals of non-native ants may be novel weapons, with greater negative impacts on native fungi that have not co-evolved with them. This research aims to test the novel weapons hypothesis by comparing the impacts of an invasive European ant, Myrmica rubra, against those of a native North American ant, Aphaenogaster picea, on a native North American fungus, Absidia sp. I hypothesized that M. rubra would reduce fungal performance as compared to A. picea. To test this hypothesis, I isolated Absidia sp. from ant-occupied soils, exposed cultures to ant colonies, and measured the percent cover of Absidia sp. after 48 hours. Percent cover of Absidia sp. was lowest in M. rubra, greater in A. picea, and greatest with no ants. Percent cover of ant-facilitated microbes was greatest in M. rubra, lower in A. picea, and lowest with no ants. Ant-facilitated microbe cover correlated negatively with Absidia sp., but, under high resource conditions, Absidia sp. negatively impacted ant-facilitated microbes. Both ant species reduced Absidia sp. cover. However, M. rubra exerted stronger negative effects, consistent with the novel weapons hypothesis

Electric Vehicle Battery Charging Infrastructure
The progression away from internal combustion engines has been slowly gaining momentum over the last ten years. This project investigated the pathway forward regarding the charging of electric vehicles. As governments have begun enacting legislative initiatives in support of a greener and more sustainable future, we are now witnessing more rapid progress toward widespread adoption of fully electric and hybrid vehicles. This study focused directly on battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Some automotive manufacturers (each with their own timeframe) have committed to producing only these BEVs, and eliminating traditional combustion engine vehicles. This investigation was designed to examine the current state of charging infrastructure, with an eye toward the future. Several key factors emerged as critical toward future build-out initiatives: the wide variety of dissimilar charge ports currently available, variable expected charging time, locations for chargers, availability of chargers, and pricing of charging service. The investigator wholeheartedly recommends that immediate action be taken in the deployment and build-out of a nationwide charging system, before the arrival of BEVs
Common Mudpuppy (Necturus maculosus) distribution, diet and seasonality in western New York and morphological condition in lake and stream habitats.
Environmental context changes the behavior and morphology of organisms. The impacts of flow on sampling techniques and morphology of the Common Mudpuppy were investigated during this study. I also explored mudpuppy distribution in western New York, diet, sexual dimorphism, seasonality, and capture biases. I found rock turning to be more efficient in streams year-round and modified minnow traps to be better more efficient in cold weather months and in deeper habitats than in other seasons or habitats. During the hot weather months, mudpuppy diet consisted of invertebrates exclusively, whereas diets in cold weather months consisted of invertebrates plus vertebrate prey. Body condition reflected the change in diet, with larger body condition when large prey items were found in gut contents. Stream-captured mudpuppies were more streamlined and possessed larger digits than lake-captured mudpuppies. Mudpuppy morphological differences between habitat types indicate phenotypic plasticity as the likely mechanism of morphological change when viewed in light of other published phylogenetic work on regional haplotypes. The findings of morphological response to flow warrant more investigation with common garden experiments. Expanding the common garden experiment to encompass future changes in temperature will help inform managers on how climate change may affect mudpuppy populations
