    THE EFFECT OF THE PANDEMIC ON NURSERY STUDENTS’ PERSONAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

    The purpose of this research was to understand the effect of the pandemic and online learning on nursery students’ personal and social development. Specifically, the study was done to determine how distance learning impacted nursery students\u27 ability to: (1) persevere, (2) restrain impulsivity, (3) work independently, and (4) participate actively in the whole group activities. The research was conducted with a sample of 450 nursery students from the American School Foundation of Monterrey (ASFM) in Mexico. It consisted of a causal-comparative design in which three generations of nursery students (150 students per generation) were compared: the 2019-2020 generation who coursed nursery on-site before the pandemic, the 2020-2021 generation who coursed the whole nursery school year through distance learning, and the 2021-2022 generation who coursed nursery back in an on-site learning environment. To determine the growth that each of these three generations had in their personal and social skills, two different instruments were used: the ASFM Nursery Report Card, which had specific strands of personal and social development, and a survey with Likert scale questions answered by 16 nursery Homeroom Teachers and Educational Assistants. This study found that distance learning had a negative impact on nursery students’ development of all four of the personal and social skills researched. This reveals some of the implications that the pandemic had on young students’ education and their socio-emotional development

    Arsenic and Old Feathers A Survey of Detection, Mitigation and Treatment Approaches for Pesticide-Affected Objects and Creating a Treatment Protocol Proposal for SUNY Buffalo State.

    Animal hides and skins present in taxidermy and other organic artifacts have long been known to have potentially poisonous pasts due to the presence of residual pesticides that were applied by creators, collectors, and museums. While chemicals such as arsenic and mercury compounds were commonly used to combat agents of deterioration, these hazardous materials pose a serious health threat to those caring for collections as well as the environment at large. Whether by natural disaster, institutional necessity, legal repatriation, or ethical obligation, conservators and collection managers must be equipped with standard practices to provide adequate care even for these seemingly innocent but dangerous artifacts. An example of the need for a written protocol for pesticide-treated objects arrived at the Garman Art Conservation Department at SUNY Buffalo State in 2018. A taxidermy bird life group enclosed in a glass bell jar was brought in for treatment by a private owner. Although the mounts were in relatively good condition, the unstable support branch warranted a treatment campaign, despite its poisonous potential. Without protocols for dealing with these materials, the feasibility of treating this object was brought into question - what procedures should be enacted before the protective bell jar was removed, and how should treatment proceed if the specimens did test positive for residual pesticides? An integrated approach for detecting and treating objects that fall under the title “hazardous” had not yet been employed at Buffalo State. As such, this study endeavored to examine existing departmental practices such as object intake, pre-treatment and treatment practices, storage and handling procedures, and related curricular content in an effort to assess those aspects that may benefit from supplemental hazardous material-related safety procedures. This study’s focused assessment summarized the routine departmental operations and proposed procedures that would benefit student’s educational experience, as well as contribute to an institution-wide health and safety standards. To create the protocol, resources currently circulating in our field detailing detection, mitigation and treatment steps for pesticide-affected objects were compiled, and existing procedures from institutions were surveyed and gathered. The resulting best practices for handling and treating pesticide-contaminated objects were then implemented during treatment of the bird life group. Besides its application in the Garman Art Conservation Department at SUNY Buffalo State, this study aims to provide a practical tool and informational guide that may be used and expanded by the wider Art Conservation and Collection Care Communities.

    Material Analysis and Conservation Treatment of Louise Nevelson’s sculpture Dawn’s Image, Night

    Louise Nevelson’s large-scale, matte black assemblage sculpture Dawn’s Image, Night, 1969, is owned by and currently on display at SUNY Buffalo State College. The paint layers exhibited significant amounts of dust, some damages, vandalism, and unsightly fingerprints. Extensive scientific analysis and archival research were utilized to design an appropriate treatment and long-term preservation plan. Methods of analysis include: Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, microchemical testing, and xray fluorescence spectroscopy. The project also addresses the ethical considerations surrounding the prior removal of original components for safety considerations, repainting as a possible treatment, and the overall obstacles of treating a large uncoated, matte monochrome sculpture insitu. The treatment was informed by scientific analysis, materials testing and ethical considerations, resulting in minimal intervention

    Goal Setting in Kindergarten: Motivating Young Learners to be Successful in Learning Sight Words

    The purpose of this research was to determine the effectiveness of goal setting as a motivator for kindergarten students in learning grade-level sight words. This study was conducted over a 6-week period in two Midwestern kindergarten classrooms. The participants in the experimental group were trained in self-setting goals and participated in weekly check-ins and bi-weekly assessments. Themes in motivation were documented using a reflection survey and anecdotal notes. Student growth was tracked using sight word assessments and growth charts. Data suggested participants who set goals achieved higher gains than participants who did not set goals
