Multiple Intelligence Theory Activities in the Middle School English as a Second Language (ESL) Classroom and the Impact on Student Perception and Engagement
Get PDFIn 1983, Howard Gardner published his Theory of Multiple Intelligences and detailed seven distinct intelligence areas. He extended his theory into the classroom and asserted that every student has their own unique gifts and talents which they bring to the classroom. Despite these contributions to pedagogy, schools continue to mainly focus on teaching curriculum standards concerned with matriculating pupils to the next grade level or getting them ready for the next standardized test.
Authentic educational experiences accommodated to student needs are infrequently used in the modern classroom. Educational institutions largely cater to verbal-linguistic and mathematical intelligence profiles, despite many students having strengths in other areas. As a result, participation and student involvement in class are frequently low. The need to increase student involvement in the Year 9 ESL classroom and, more particularly, to consider closely students whose intelligence strengths were neither verbal-linguistic nor logical-mathematical, gave rise to the motivation for this project.

Get PDFThe purpose of this study was to get insight related to the literacy instruction and the connection between phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, and phonics for fluent reading. The research includes examinations of students\u27 prior knowledge of phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, and phonics decoding skills, along with their ability to read grade level text. Students received daily instruction in literacy through modified Lucy Calkins’ Units of Study in reading, writing, and phonics. Some adaptations and supplemental resources were used to support this curriculum. As the data was collected the instructor made adjustments to the instruction to fill gaps in phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, and phonics decoding skills to give students the tools needed to be effective, fluent readers. At the end of study students were reassessed using the same pre assessment tools to find the effectiveness of phonological awareness and phonemic awareness being paired with the phonics instruction. The researcher observed that students used their phonological and phonemic awareness skills to decode words more effectively, resulting in students becoming fluent readers as assessed by the Fountas and Pinnell running record guide. The results of the study found that students\u27 phonological awareness and phonemic awareness knowledge supported their phonics understanding and reading abilities
A Comparison of M&T Bank and Citizens Bank Net Income Changes During the Coronavirus Pandemic
Get PDFThe COVID-19 pandemic had a tremendous impact on every aspect of life, particularly within the world of banking & finance. All banks saw sharp drops in their stock prices and net income, but my hypothesis is that larger, more established banks maintained more stability during 2020 than smaller banks. This paper analyzes the income statements and balance sheets of M&T Bank (an older, more well-established bank) and Citizens Bank (a less-established bank) during this difficult time.
The first part of my thesis describes similarities and differences between M&T Bank and Citizens Bank. I explain how these similarities and differences may have had an impact on how each bank responded to the pandemic and what resources were available to them during that time. I conclude that M&T Bank has a more solid reputation and more resources available to them, primarily due to their long-standing reputation in comparison to Citizens Bank.
The second part of my thesis begins by analyzing the significant difference in the percentage change in net incomes between the two banks in 2021, with Citizens Bank\u27s net income increasing by 119% from 2020 compared to M&T Bank\u27s 37% increase. I ran a regression model and concluded several variables contributed to this difference. With a time dummy variable in the econometric model, I conclude that M&T Bank was indeed more stable than Citizens Bank with regards to maintaining a stable net income quarter-to-quarter. In other respects, I conclude that the impact of the pandemic on M&T Bank and Citizens Bank were fairly similar, although accounting differences and a lack of insider information may have manipulated the final results
Contextualizing and reconstructing a model birch bark canoe
Get PDFTo perform a well-informed conservation treatment on an object, it is crucial to understand its context, history, and significance. When an object presents with little provenance or context, it can be difficult to determine the course that its treatment should follow. In this project, a structurally unstable birch bark canoe model of unknown origin was examined, researched, and treated. The treatment campaign was customized for the object based on literature research, owner consultation, and materials experimentation. The canoe model was structurally stabilized with adhesive and adhesive reactivated Japanese tissue, it was locally humidified and reshaped with Gore-Tex sandwiches, and was visually improved with a non-adhesive quill replacement technique. During the treatment campaign, new information was revealed about the potential origin of the object, confirming it was likely created by a Native artist as a souvenir for the tourist trade

Individualized clinical coaching with bug-in-ear: Enhancing fidelity of implementation of behavior specific praise among novice teachers of students with developmental disabilities in rural classrooms
Get PDFFive novice special education teachers in rural classrooms received individualized clinical coaching (ICC) via the Internet to increase their use of behavior specific praise (BSP) with their students who had developmental disabilities (DD) during clinical supervision. Web cameras provided opportunities for the teachers to be observed during their regularly scheduled classroom teaching. The participants received brief coaching prompts through a wireless earpiece that they wore while teaching. A single subject multiple baseline across participants design was used to determine if a functional relation existed between the ICC and the rate of BSP use per minute for each of the participants. Visual data analysis of nonoverlap and trend reflected that once the teachers began to receive virtual feedback, their use of BSP increased. In addition, they maintained the teaching behavior once the intervention was removed. Within a social validity questionnaire, each of the teachers reported that they found the coaching to be a valuable, non-invasive intervention for receiving professional development for using an evidence-based practice with their students
Regional-scale climate-induced variation in ant physiology and morphology
Get PDFThe biology of ectotherms such as insects is influenced by ambient thermal conditions. Ants are a ubiquitous and ecologically important group of insects and are well-established as bioindicators of thermal conditions. Ants are sensitive to the thermal extremes that vary with latitude, elevation, and land use, and these thermal gradients influence their spatial and temporal distributions. As a result, ants have evolved physiological and morphological thermal adaptations in response to the thermal environment of their habitats. These adaptations include increased physiological and morphological tolerance for temperature extremes. In Western New York (WNY), temperatures are temporally and spatially heterogeneous, changing with the season and in distinct regional climate zones formed by gradients in elevation and proximity to the Great Lakes. Coastal areas are relatively colder in spring and warmer in fall than inland areas, and urbanized areas are relatively warmer year-round. The goal of this study is to assess ants as climate bioindicators by investigating the relationship between ant thermal traits and regional climate variation in Western New York. Though I investigated several ant species, my focus was on two regionally abundant ant species: Aphaenogaster picea (myrmicine) and Lasius americanus (formicine). I repeatedly sampled closed canopy and open areas during the early and late summer of 2020. Ants were tested for minimum and maximum physiological thermal tolerance (CTmin and CTmax) and ant leg length morphology was measured using a stereomicroscope
