Las honduras de este Déficit Escolar The Pandemic and its Impact on the Educational and Schooling Experiences of Front-Line Responders Working at a Private High School in Honduras

    No full text
Centered on the testimonios,“a narration marked by the urgency to make public a situation of oppression or injustice and of resistance against that same condition” (Forcinito, 2016, p. 239) of four female frontline workers employed at a private bilingual high school in a city in Honduras, this ethnographic study provides details and themes about how these essential workers grappled with the shutdown and lengthy interruption of their children\u27s face-to-face schooling. Offering insight into the contextual realities of Honduras and the differences and commonalities between private bilingual and private and public schooling institutions, this study relies on testimonio as a critical methodology to address the impact of the pandemic on front-line workers\u27 life experiences. The goal is to ensure that the audience understands the realities of some families in Honduras pre-, during, and after the COVID-19 crisis, resulting in conditions that threaten the welfare of generations of children from a nation in the heart of Central America

A German cuckoo clock was treated during this project. The history and context of the clock are discussed and ethical issues regarding functional objects are considered. The clock’s primary condition issue was the deterioration of the leather bellows material, causing the clock to no longer whistle. New bellows were fabricated, using the surviving top and bottom blocks, and a variety of replacement bellows materials were tested and considered. The clock was reassembled and returned to working order, and aesthetic losses were addressed

More than Words: Using Children\u27s Literature to Promote Self-Awareness in the Primary Grades

    Get PDF
Children at the beginning of their formal educational experiences are developing cognitively, socially, and emotionally. However, due to the ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic, many children are behind in these developmental areas. Self-awareness is a foundation of students’ understandings of themselves and the world around them. Without a greater perception of self-awareness, children learning to read in the primary grades might struggle in self-efficacy and motivation, and a lack of self-awareness can even affect students’ understandings of texts in later grades. This article focuses on how teachers can use children’s literature to discuss socioemotional components and to help students recognize who they are as learners and readers

A Creative Cognition Framework for Generating Breakthrough Ideas

    Get PDF
Latest developments in creative cognition, largely informed by neuroscience, give us the ability to debunk pervasive and insidious creativity myths that get in the way of creating breakthrough ideas. This paper, through a review of creative cognition and neuroscience literature derives and synthesises a creative cognition framework focused on engaging metacognition of the creative process, activating creating drive, shifting perspective to gain insight, deploying defocused attention and finally, and only when the other dimensions have been established, sparking remote connections and getting to breakthrough ideas. As practitioners we need to ensure we are strategically deploying this framework, creating the time and space for deep thinking, and that the process seamlessly supports people to be at their creative best. As thinking on creative cognition develops further over time, this framework will be updated and also iterated with practical learnings from deployment

Smells Like Team Spirit: How to Foster Psychological Safety and Enhance Team Creativity

    Get PDF
Creativity is one of the most sought-after skills of the 21st century, yet team members may be reticent to contribute to creative problem-solving out of fear of ridicule, retribution, or because of rigid hierarchical team structures. However, psychological safety is the underpinning of creativity; without it a culture of silence prevails, mistakes go unreported, and team creativity languishes. But how do leaders cultivate psychological safety in their teams? This project seeks to answer that question. Although the term “psychological safety” has become common in the corporate lexicon, misconceptions abound. Through the creation of a short, animated video, this project addresses these common misconceptions and introduces ways in which leaders can cultivate psychological safety in their teams. Key learnings include the popular understanding of psychological safety, script writing and animated video creation, and tools for leaders. Future creative possibilities are also discussed

EVALUATING THE USE OF A SPECIALISED TECHNOLOGICAL APPLICATION ON STUDENTS LEARNING GROWTH

    Get PDF
From experience, students usually drop in their achievement levels only when faced with a situation that is beyond their control. Situations that impact them are either physical, mental, or both, such as bullying, family sickness, or death. The global pandemic that swept the world was a situation that has globally affected all human beings. This impact was substantial not just from a humanistic perspective of well-being but also economically and academically. The economic and human impact was an experience that could be seen directly within the schools of Qatar. Large swathes of children were showing lower academic levels than was predicted before the pandemic. When we returned from Covid, levels of learning were below what teachers expected. Globally, government and school expectations were for children to catch up. In Qatar, this was also the expectation. Schools behaved in such a way that they required children to continue as if they had not missed a second of education. Experience and observation showed differently
