    Explicit Instruction in a Second Grade Picturebook Author Study

    Using the Learning by Design multiliteracies framework, writing workshop was transformed into composing workshop. The researcher worked with a team of four second grade teachers in an urban public elementary school to redesign their Kevin Henkes author study to equally value art and design, guiding their students in creating their own narrative picturebooks. The researcher addresses the following two research questions: 1. What explicit instructional practices did the teachers enact? 2. What influence did these explicit instructional practices have on the second graders’ composing work? The researcher applied cross-case analysis, first to create an inventory of explicit instructional practices, and second, to identify illustrative cases and representative samples of explicit practices. The researcher documents the teachers’ explicit instruction, harnessing social cognition of the learning community, that resulted in students’ application of an expanded semiotic landscape to express their own narrative understandings. Students demonstrated knowledge transformation and development of metalinguistic understandings. The reflexive nature of implementing Learning by Design pedagogy means that curriculum design is always a work in progress, always in need of redesign to be responsive and supportive of the children in front of us

    Our Lady of the Remedies of La Paz: Technical Study and Treatment of a Colonial Andean Painting

    Our Lady of the Remedies of La Paz is an example of Colonial Andean ex-voto painting. It depicts a popular La Paz legend, according to which a tondo of the Virgin Mary came to life after being stabbed by a gambler, and shielded herself and her child from additional blows. The canvas had been impregnated with wax and exhibited a number of condition issues, including significant overpaint and broad undulations. It also lacked tacking margins, as is typical of many Andean paintings of the 18th century. Our Lady was photographed using multimodal and multispectral imaging, as well as x-radiography. Analytical techniques FTIR, reflected FTIR, and scanning XRF were performed to better understand the painting’s materials and history. The palette was consistent with the historical materials of the region and time period, and indicated the use of earth colors, vermillion, bone black, lead white, orpiment, and Prussian blue. The presence of Prussian blue suggests that the painting was created after 1770, the year the pigment is first known to have been used in the region. Finally, aesthetic and structural treatments were undertaken to restore planarity and compensate for losses

    Child Maltreatment & Teachers Views in the Dominican Republic

    This study focuses on the knowledge/training teachers have when it comes to child abuse/maltreatment the services provided in the United States and how it differs from the Dominican Republic. It is important for teachers to understand and provide the necessary resources to prevent child maltreatment. There has been little to no previous research done in the Dominican Republic regarding this topic. However, social services appear to be emerging in the Dominican Republic (Parada, Moffatt, Duval, 2007). Additionally, prior research in the U.S. has focused on the knowledge of child abuse and reporting of teachers. For instance, a study conducted in Florida used the Educators and Child Abuse Questionnaire to evaluate early childhood educators’ self�reported knowledge regarding “signs and symptoms of child abuse, reporting procedures, and legal aspects” (Dinehart & Kenny, 2015).     Synthesis and Characterization of Heptamethine Indocyanine Dyes for Near-IR (NIR) Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) Reporters

    Near-infrared (NIR) surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an emerging technique widely used in bioimaging due to its high-resolution output compared to other methods like MRI, CT, and PET imaging. Despite the high demand for ultrasensitive SERS probes in bioimaging, the development of new Raman-active dyes is necessary due to their limited availability, sensitivity, and reproducibility. This thesis describes the synthesis and characterization of a small library of NIR heptamethine indocyanine dyes containing various amino substituents for screening by SERS. IR-786, a known heptamethine indocyanine dye, was used as the parent compound for derivatization by different amines via nucleophilic substitutions of the meso-chloride. Subsequently, the secondary amine was further derivatized by introducing functionally diverse chemical substituents. This library of heptamethine indocyanine dyes was structurally analyzed using nuclear magnetic spectroscopy, electrospray mass spectrometry, and infrared spectroscopy. The UV-visible/near-infrared spectra were collected showing a relationship between the Raman signals produced and the UV-visible/near-infrared relative position to 780nm wavelength. Furthermore, the heptamethine indocyanine dye molecules were individually coupled with citrate capped, quick-freezing induced AuNP aggregates (QFIAAs) prior to SERS analysis. The process of quick-freezing an AuNP solution followed by a thawing step result in increased “hot spots”, or area between closely spaced particles, which has been found to increase the SERS signal of an analyte. Quick-frozen AuNPs are advantageous in that they are easily reproducible and have a minimum stability of three months. My research suggests that the resonating effect of the functional substituent in the amine governs the QFIAA-enhanced NIR-SERS activity

    Near Infra-red (NIR) Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) is an emerging technique widely used in bioimaging due to its high-resolution output compared to other methods. Recently the FDA approved Indocyanine Green, a NIR optical marker, for detecting cancerous tissue in clinical screening. Indocyanine Green has an absorbance maximum of \u3e750 nm making it a unique probe also suitable for determining cardiac output, hepatic function, liver, gastric blood flow, and ophthalmic angiography. Despite the high demand for Raman active near-IR sensitive molecules in bioimaging, the development of ultrasensitive SERS is still daunting due to its availability, sensitivity, and reproducibility. A library of heptamethine cyanine dyes was synthesized by nucleophilic substitutions of Meso-chloride with different amines. Subsequently, the secondary amine was derivatized by introducing functionally diverse chemical substituents. We hypothesized that the resonating effect of the functional substituent in the amine would govern the enhanced NIR-SERS activity of the compounds. Following the synthesis, the dye molecules were individually coupled with citrate-capped, QFIAAs (Quick Freezing Induced Aggregation AuNPs) to enhance the NIR-SERS signal during Raman analysis. Raman signal produced showed a relationship between UV/Visible absorbance intensity and relative position to 780 nm wavelength of a dye

    From experience, students usually drop in their achievement levels only when faced with a situation that is beyond their control. Situations that impact them are either physical, mental, or both, such as bullying, family sickness, or death. The global pandemic that swept the world was a situation that has globally affected all human beings. This impact was substantial not just from a humanistic perspective of well-being but also economically and academically. The economic and human impact was an experience that could be seen directly within the schools of Qatar. Large swathes of children were showing lower academic levels than was predicted before the pandemic. When we returned from Covid, levels of learning were below what teachers expected. Globally, government and school expectations were for children to catch up. In Qatar, this was also the expectation. Schools behaved in such a way that they required children to continue as if they had not missed a second of education. Experience and observation showed differently
