Dominican Republic: Classroom Behavior & Management
Get PDFBehavior and Classroom Management strategies are very impactful educational tools that teachers can use to promote a safe, healthy, and well-rounded classroom environment. When teachers are properly trained to carry out these strategies, they are more likely to have better responses with student engagement and a better ability to deliver appropriate positive or negative consequences. A short-term study regarding teacher and administration perspectives on Behavior and Classroom Management strategies was conducted in schools in Cabarete, Dominican Republic. After interviewing the teachers and administrators, a questionnaire was given to participants asking questions about training, preferences, and strengths and weaknesses in a teacher’s classroom and behavior management strategies. I also conducted observation in the classrooms. Straight Out-of-the-Tube: Analysis and Conservation of George Mathieu’s Pour une aliénation définitive du logos
Get PDFPour une aliénation définitive du logos (96.5 cm × 195.6 cm, Buffalo AKG Art Museum, Acc.1971:7), painted in 1955 by French artist Georges Mathieu (1921-2012) is an iconic example of Lyrical Abstraction. Mathieu launched this European counterpart to Abstract Expressionism in the post-war upheaval of 1947. His unorthodox methods present a unique combination of aesthetic concerns and intrinsic material instability. Mathieu’s technique involved squeezing oil paints out-of-the-tube directly onto his canvas with rapid and spontaneous calligraphic motions. The primary condition issue for Pour une aliénation définitive du logos was the failing adhesion between this thickly applied paint and the primed canvas support which resulted in extreme lifting and loss. Mathieu’s out-of-the-tube impasto, floating composition, and the large scale of the painting amplified this deterioration.
This paper discusses previous treatments and research of Mathieu’s paintings and presents imaging techniques and scientific analysis that were used to characterize the materials to help establish a suitable course of treatment, while considering the ethical dialogue surrounding appropriate levels of intervention. Analysis included: multi-modal imaging with a modified UV-VIS-IR DSLR camera, photogrammetry, transmitted light photography with high-dynamic-range stacking, transmission Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. The treatment consisted of a restrained cleaning, a novel approach to consolidation, compensation, and the installation of a new secondary support structure. Securing the delicate painting to a new stretcher was accomplished with a custom-made external hammock and carved backing board to accommodate the topography of the reverse.
The issues encountered in this project speak to the broad scope of challenges in conserving modern oil paintings and more particularly the specific challenges of so-called “Montparnasse Disease” suffered by a group of works from the Post-War School of Paris. Imaging and analysis of Pour une aliénation définitive du logos uncovered valuable information about the artist’s materials and technique and the treatment stabilized the painting’s fragile structure. The conserved painting now more accurately represents Mathieu’s unrestrained style and artistic voice in a new era of globalism and extreme change

Native Americans have had a long and arduous past. Many generations of tribal nations within the geographical and political context of the United States have experienced genocide, forced relocation, had their land seized, and cultural artifacts and remains stolen since the fifteenth century. Museums have become the primary institutions now owning the majority of variously acquired artifacts of Native American cultural heritage and displaying them in pursuit of scientific study. For the long overdue injustices done to Native Americans, the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) was established in 1990, under the President George H.W. Bush administration, to aid federally recognized Native American tribal nations to facilitate the repatriation or return of their artifacts being housed in these institutions.
This thesis will do a deep dive into NAGPRA and what it represents to help understand the repatriation of a historically significant artifact known as the Red Jacket Peace Medal back to the Seneca Nation from the Buffalo History Museum. This paper will also expand on the issues of repatriation, review of the law of NAGPRA, along with some historic accounts of other tribes within the State of New York, and lastly, to disclose the ethics of repatriation, along with the importance of objects and case studies affiliated with NAGPRA law and cultural patrimony

19th-Century Medical Saddlebag: An Analysis of the Contents and a Conservation Treatment
Get PDFThe medicinal contents found within a mid-1800’s saddlebag were investigated using multimodal imaging techniques, micro-transmission Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (transFTIR), pyrolysis Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy (pyGCMS), X- Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF), Raman Spectroscopy and the reference collection of the SUNY Buffalo State Eckert Herbarium. Housed within glass vials and paper packets, the medicinal samples from seventeen different containers were analyzed and their results compared with historical references. Medicines with probable identification were found to be of both mineral and botanical origins: mercurous chloride, lead acetate, magnesium carbonate, iron oxides, gum arabic, ground croton seeds, benzoin resin, Fabaceae senna and Arctostaphylos uva- ursi leaves, bark, and roots. Informed by the health and safety measures dictated by the identified contents a conservation treatment was completed and involved a modified imaging set-up, reassembly and filling the losses of a glass vial with Japanese paper reinforced with B-72, securing the contents of the paper packets using gampi, and constructing archival housing for all twenty of the individual objects
