Perception of Consonants in Single Codas in English by Cantonese and Mandarin Speakers
Get PDFOne’s native language (L1) would interfere with the perception of a foreign language because of the differences between the sound inventories and distributions in the two languages. Compared with English, the syllable structures of Cantonese and Mandarin are relatively simple. Mandarin has only two coda consonants /n/ and /ŋ/, while Cantonese has six: /p/,/t/,/k/,/m/,/n/,/ŋ/, both languages do not allow consonant clusters. However, English allows multiple consonants in syllable final position.This study investigates Cantonese and Mandarin speakers’ perception of English consonants in single codas, and found that Cantonese who were learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) have advantages in the perception of English coda nasals and stops compared to the Mandarin speakers, but they have difficulty in identifying the voiced-voiceless contrasts in plosives. This is considered to be a result of negative transfer from their first language

Comparison of the Poetics between British Ballads and Yao Ballads
Get PDFAlthough British ballads and Yao ballads are created in different backgrounds of language and culture, they all come from the folk and are characterized by the folk songs, not only following the principles of traditional poetry composing, but also reflecting the social reality in an easy-to-understand language. Actually they are rare intangible cultural heritages retained by human beings. In this paper, poetic characteristics of British ballads and Yao ballads are analyzed from three aspects of meter, rhythm, rhyme and poetic style. The purpose is to explain the commonality and uniqueness of different national literary systems, and to sum up the aesthetic value and development law of literary works. Meanwhile, it also expounds the similarities or unique features between British ballads and Yao ballads by discussing the typical composing techniques and poetic structure characteristics of the ballads of the two nationalities, so that a useful conclusion is drawn for philosophical, aesthetic and critical comparative research as well as a new comparative perspective is explored for comparative literature research

Distinctive Effect of Role Play Instructional Method and Gender on English Language Skills’ Acquisition of Secondary School Students in Awka Education Zone
Get PDFThis study investigated the distinctive effect of role play instructional method and gender on English language skills’ acquisition of secondary school students in Awka Education Zone, Nigeria. Two research questions guided the study and two hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The design of the study was quasi experimental design involving 2x2 factorial designs. The population of the study consisted of 4,024 SS2 students in the 62 public secondary schools in the education zone. Out of this, a sample of 180 students made up of 93 females and 87 males were drawn from four intact classes of the selected schools. Multi- stage sampling procedure of stratified and simple random techniques were used to select two Local Government Areas from the five Local Government Areas that made up the education zone, out of which four schools comprising two female and two male schools were selected. The instrument for data collection was English Language Skills Acquisition Test (ELSAT). It was validated by three experts from Faculty of Education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka along with two seasoned English language teachers from the secondary schools who are experts in the field. The reliability of the instrument was ascertained using Kendal-W for essay/letter writing type questions which yielded acceptable intra reliability indexes of 0.97 for comprehension, 0.90 for essay/letter writing and 0.81 for summary and inter reliability indexes of 0.92, 0.90 and 0.82 respectively. Cronbach Alpha was used for multiple choice and oral/speaking questions which yielded reliability indexes of 9.7 for multiple choice questions and 7.6 for oral/speaking test. Data collected was analyzed using mean and standard deviation while Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypotheses. The findings of the study revealed among others that students in experimental group who were taught English language using role play instructional method acquired the language skills more than those in the control group who were taught with traditional lecture method. The findings further indicated that both male and female in the experimental group had great improvement in their language skills acquisition though the female students outperformed the male students after the experiment. This showed that gender is a significant factor in students’ acquisition of English language skills when role play instructional method is used. Based on the findings, it was recommended that English language teachers in the secondary schools should be encouraged and empowered to adopt the use of role play instructional method in the teaching and learning of English language as it has been discovered to be an effective means of improving students’ acquisition of language skills

Tendulkar has written basically all his plays in his native language ‘Marathi’. It is contribution or co-operation of many translators who has been translated his plays in English and in many other languages. But English version is one of the most popular than that of other language versions. And about the themes and the sources of his plays it would not be wrong to say that all of his plays are based on his individual experiences and his direct observation of postmodern society. How Instructors Engage Students in Online Courses: A Correlational Study From the Perspective of Transformational Leadership
Get PDFUniversally accepted as a long-term critical strategy in higher educational institutions (HEIs) over the past two decades, online courses have recently witnessed a tremendous surge since the outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic. There is a growing concern among educational stakeholders regarding how to effectively engage students in online courses. Though research efforts have proved significant positive correlations between online instructor transformational leadership (TL) and student satisfaction/learning outcomes, empirical investigations in relation to the correlation between instructor TL and student engagement in college online courses are rare. This paper conducted a quantitative correlational study using two previously well-established survey questionnaires, Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (5X-Short) and Online Community and Engagement Scale, to assess students’ perceptions of online instructor TL behaviors and SE. Spearman’s rank correlation analysis demonstrated that there exist significant positive linear correlations between the concerned variables, and multiple linear regression analysis identified two specific TL factors, Idealized Influence (Attribute) and Intellectual Stimulation, as significant predictors of student engagement in online courses. This paper concludes with the implication that HEIs should encourage the training of online instructors as transformational leaders in instructor professional development session. Limitations and corresponding recommendations for future research are also proposed at the end

Most of these translation studies focus on the specific terms and contents of texts, which are the basic aspects of publicizing archaeological culture, but diverse text forms and multimodality can be also taken into consideration. Paratext, one part of its text, mediates the text and readers by presenting some verbal and non-verbal expressions of writers, translators, publishers and even countries to deliver much information and provide a more academic atmosphere. Multimodality, as an exchanging channel and intermediary, is a semiotic system combing photos, languages, videos and so on. From the perspective of Multimodality, Sanxingdui Ruins’ translation in Xinhua News Agency attracted many people’s attention across the world for its paratextual elements. Nowadays, we are entering into a fast-speed and changeable era, switching short videos, reading some short news and browsing brief information are the optimized options for the public to know global changes and current affairs. Thus, Sanxingdui Ruins’ news in Xinhua News Agency makes most use of this method to exchange Chinese archaeology’s development and culture, with the sound and strong reaction. Since the proposal of “going global” strategy, China is devoted to disseminating its traditional and valuable cultures to shape a great image and build a national discourse system. Then, as for the archaeological community, the example of paratext under multimodality provides a new pattern to translate the ancient but dull materials. What’s more, as for the international community, within multimodality framework, ongoing multi-polarity is backed firmly by paratextual news to knot the cultural ties with all the countries. Especially in the post-pandemic era with the rising uncertainties and instabilities, we should take a look at archaeology translation and its paratext to enhance multilateral archaeology diplomatic connection, so as to promote cultural diversity and even to drive the development of globalization
