A Study of Social Support for Patients with Mental Disorders in Rehabilitation Stations
In recent years, the prevalence of mental disorders has increased dramatically and has become a disease that seriously endangers people’s physical and mental health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 1 billion people worldwide are suffering from mental disorders. However, the social organizations specializing in serving people with mental disorders in China are inadequate and have limited power, and the cooperative ties among welfare providers are not close enough, which cause the failing to provide efficient support and services for people with mental disorders. This study adopts a field research method to explore the complementary cooperative relationship among various welfare providers and the social support received by patients with mental disorders in the rehabilitation process, and to promote the social support role of various welfare providers in education, employment and medical care in the welfare services for the group of patients with mental disorders, using 17 rehabilitation stations in Suzhou City A District as the research subjects.
Nigeria’s Federal Legislators’ Bloated Remuneration and Implications for Public Policy and Good Governance
This paper is a descriptive type. The study employs secondary data that was sourced from journal articles, online materials, government documentaries, and dailies to examine the huge salaries and other allowances “earned” by members of the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The study is against the background of the controversies that enormous salaries and allowances of legislators have generated in the country since the return of democratic rule in 29th May; 1999. Despite the biting economic situation, poverty, unemployment and collapsed public infrastructures, members of the National Assembly continue to receive controversial salaries and allowances, and still often clamor for more. This study examines this issue and its implications for the country. The study concludes by proffering policy options which include but are not limited to giving serious thought to the need for part-time legislators who would only be entitled to sitting allowance, a significant reduction in the payments of all political office holders, and reduction of the two chambers of the National Assembly in Nigeria to one house-unicameral legislature, or at worst; reduction in the number of national lawmakers to maintain a cost-effective legislature.
An Empirical Study on Zero Address Terms Among Chinese College Students
Chinese address terms are the basis of interpersonal communication. On the one hand, a conversation usually begins with address terms which play a important role. On the other hand, choosing different address terms represents the different tone the speaker wants to express. Therefore, accurate and appropriate use of address terms is one of the important symbols of successful communication. However, using zero address terms is still very common because we don’t know how to address appropriately in some occasions. This paper aims to study the common types of zero address terms usage among university students, and try to summarize the main reasons. This study is based on daily conversations of college students in four common campus scenes which are office building, study building, store and playground. The following findings are obtained in this study. There are five common types of zero address terms phenomenon. They are polite expression, personal pronoun, no expression, onomatopoeia and body language. There are three main reasons for using zero address terms. They are occasion, interpersonal purpose and social development.
A Comparison of Measurements of Syntactic Complexity in L2 Writing: Large-Grained Indices and Fine-Grained Clausal and Phrasal Indices
As an important measure of second language (L2) writing, syntactic complexity has always been a significant concept in L2 writing research and pedagogy. Syntactic complexity has traditionally been manipulated through large-grained indices. Although large-grained indices are regarded as the most consistent measurement in L2 writing studies, its widespread application has been criticized recently mainly because of the difficulty in its interpretation and a potentially misaligned focus on clausal complexity like clausal subordination. In this article, the researcher aims to adopt the large-grained indices of syntactic complexity, fine-grained indices of clausal complexity, and fine-grained indices of phrasal complexity to predict the holistic quality of independent expository essays written by Chinese college students. Results revealed that fine-grained indices of phrasal complexity were better indices to predict the overall writing quality than either large-grained or fine-grained clausal indices. These results tally with Kyle and Crossley’s (2018) claims with regard to the validity of syntactic complexity indices in predicting writing quality and also provide stronger support for the superiority of fine-grained indices of phrasal complexity
A Cross-Cultural Analysis of Sentiment in “COVID-19” Reportage of CCTV News and The New York Times
Drawing support from the artificial intelligence platform of Baidu Cloud and the natural language processing approach, this paper provides an empirically-grounded micro-analysis of Sino-American news discourses on “COVID-19” pandemic in China 2020 by using keyword wordcloud analysis on sentiment expressions, namely the discourses from the websites of CCTV News and The New York Times. The authors analyzed the media’s intended attitudes expressed with sentiment, and found that the attitude of the Chinese people and China’s media towards the epidemic was mostly positive; while New York Times was mostly negative about the epidemic, especially at the peak of the outbreak. Such a difference presents a prevalent manifestation of recognition towards the epidemic led by either government or media institutions while people face uncertainties caused by corona virus, which may further influence the public opinion and attitudes towards the epidemic, which in turn has broader social/political-interactional purposes and public cognitive construction.
