The Introduction of Guiding-Thinking and Inquiring Teaching Method involving Eight Links to a Normal English Class

According to the new English curriculum ( The Ministry of Education, 2003). designed for high schools, English teaching should involve helping students develop a certain level of comprehensive language competence and the ability to use language for real communication. Under this circumstance, and considering the actual teaching situation, the school that I take a temporary post has modified the Guiding-Thinking and Inquiring Teaching Method (Jinchi Li, 2001 ).involving eight links during a whole class. In this paper, I will interpret the basic requirements of this teaching method, therefore, it can have some enlightenment on other similar schools that teach students whose English competences required are comparatively low. And some suggestions will be put forward aimed at improving this typical teaching model
Student Teachers’ Perceptions of Their Development of 21st Century Competencies in Jordan
Get PDFThe purpose of the study was to examine Jordanian student teachers’ perceptions of whether their Teacher Education had prepared them for 21st-century competencies, and how well they applied these competencies to their classroom teaching. The study also identified best practices, major obstacles, and suggestions for achieving these competencies. The study was conducted in two universities in the South and three universities in the North of Jordan that offer teacher education programs. A mixed-methods approach was used for this study. The sample consisted of 457 Student teachers who completed a structured questionnaire with open-ended questions to assess 21st-century competencies. Quantitative data analysis relies on descriptive statistics and correlations, while qualitative data analysis relies on content analysis. Despite differences in competency, the student teachers achieved 21st-century competencies based on their self-assessment. Students’ perceptions of whether they succeed in implementing 21st-century competencies in their classrooms were documented in this study. The best-achieved competency was collaboration, and the least well-achieved competency was global connections. Answers to open-ended questions provided convincing evidence that courses involving collaborative and interactive learning, high quality, sufficient support, relevant 21st-century competencies, and integrating theory and practice can contribute significantly to the development of student teachers’ 21st-century competencies
Armed Banditry and Mass School Abductions in Northern Nigeria: Implications for National Security
Get PDFSecurity threats in Nigeria, due to activities of armed bandits/extremist such as kidnapping school children for ransom is one of the major prevalent insecurity issues that threaten to collapse government structures in the country. Nigeria is currently groaning under the yoke of the jihadist/Islamic movement, secessionist’s movement and all manners of criminalities. The recent spate of abductions and mass kidnapping of school children represents one of the existential threats to the future of education in northern Nigeria. The problems have provoked serious concerns across the nation, has called for urgent and holistic resolution. It has continued to be precarious, volatile and highly unpredictable, therefore creating untold fear on the people in the region; exacerbate the close down of many schools, food crisis situation, sexual molestation/slavery, and increasing wave of Internally Displaced Persons. Government’s response to the challenges has generally been ineffectual, uncoordinated and poorly executed. This paper, therefore, examines the mainstream of armed banditry, hostage taking/kidnapping in northern schools and their security threats to Nigeria. This paper anchored on “Failed state theory” and data were sourced through secondary means and analyzed qualitatively. The paper revealed that lack of education, mass illiteracy and lack of employment opportunities are among the root causes of the criminalities, banditry, and terrorism in northern Nigeria. Hence, government cannot be passive about this security challenge. It is obviously clear that government has failed in her duty to provide basic needs and has also failed to defend and protect her people. Therefore, government should address the root causes of insecurity in the northern Nigeria including overhauling the security architecture system among other policies geared towards eliminating structural imbalance in the region
Maternal Health in Urban Areas: Therapeutic Use and Barriers Identified by Pregnant Women, Parturients, and New Mothers in the Commune of Koumassi in Abidjan
Get PDFThe supply of care is diverse and varied in urban areas. This may influence women’s use of health care. The goal of this study is to investigate the therapeutic use of pregnant women, parturients, and new mothers and the barriers revealed by the latter in the commune of Koumassi in Abidjan. The data for this study come from the 2020 database of the Groupe de recherche espace territoire, société et santé (GRETSSA) of the Institut de Géographie Tropicale (IGT). Indeed, GRETSSA conducted a large cross-sectional survey in the 10 communes of the city of Abidjan among 3600 households. There were 102 parturients, new mothers, and pregnant women identified in the sample for the commune of Koumassi. Based on descriptive statistical analysis, the results of this study show that women go more to a modern health service at the beginning of their pregnancies (69%). This tendency, paradoxically, decreases as the pregnancy progresses and is again high when women are at term (70.2%). On average, mothers-to-be have made a total of 3.3 prenatal visits (PNC) to the maternity hospital regularly. This represents at least one PNC per pregnant woman. Our study identified barriers to seeking care. Among these barriers, the lack of quality of care and the still-high costs of some health services affect the demand for maternal care
A Multimodal Analysis of Traditional Chinese Paintings: Based on the Grammar of Visual Design
Get PDFWith the development of multimedia technology, the modalities in culture interpreting are diversified, and it is essential to investigate the function of multimodal semiotics in intercultural communication. Based on Kress and Van Leeuwen’s grammar of visual design, we discussed its adaptation in the traditional Chinese count painting and the meaning of depicted semiotics in cultural innovation in the Application of the Chinese paintings the Twelve Beauties of Prince Yong published by the Palace Museum. As one of the representatives of Chinese count lady painting in the Qing Dynasty, it is found that the Twelve Beauties of Prince Yong could conform to the fundamental principle of the grammar of visual design. Although two distinct modalities—image and text—are related tightly, they express meaning and load information through different visual positions. Interpreting the traditional culture with multimodal perspectives can highlight the core based on containing originality and close to contemporary aesthetics. It is hoped that this study can promote the conversion of some ancient authentic arts or relics from single mode to multimode, enhancing the efficiency of intercultural communication.

The Shift of Directionality in Translation Activities in China (2011-2020)
Get PDFTranslation as an intercultural and interlingual activity is in the progress echoing synchronously the social, economic and cultural development of a country. In the long recorded history of China, translation has played an irreplaceable role in political, cultural and economic exchanges between China and other nations. By way of reviewing the long history of translation activities in China from the Han Dynasty to the 21st century, it is found that the directionality of translation from foreign languages into Chinese (FL-C) has kept over thousands of years until the late 10 years have witnessed the reversed directionality in translation. After perusing literature review together with quantified translation works and the comparative study, the four high tides with the dominant FL-C translation are periodized in the span of thousands of years and much focus is given to evidence and justify the shifted directionality of Chinese into foreign languages (C-FL) translation activities from 2011 to 2020. Aided by the quantitative and qualitative analysis, this article makes an in-depth exploration of C-FL translation activities from three major aspects, that is, main fields and target languages in translation industry, the government funded projects for publishing C-FL translation works, and the major publishing houses for C-FL translation works, and it also has a further elaboration of the shifted directionality of translation under the framework of Pierre Bourdieu’s(1984, 1986) sociological theories on the field and the capital
The Appraisal-Based Case Teaching Method in China’s Legal Education

As a new teaching method of law with emphasis on logic and demonstration, it is of great significance to break through the disadvantages of traditional law education.
