The Role of Themes in Bret Harte’s “The Luck of Roaring Camp” and John Cheever’s “The Swimmer”
Get PDFThis study briefly examines the importance of interpreting themes in literature. The discussion of themes will be limited to Bret Harte’s “The Luck of Roaring Camp” and John Cheever’s “The Swimmer.” On the one hand, the study focuses on the themes of redemption, sin, and sense of responsibility in Harte’s “The Luck of Roaring Camp.” On the other hand it focuses on the themes of passage of time, social class, and delusion in John Cheever’s “The Swimmer.” In the first place, the study will introduces the significance of interpreting literary themes and how they are connected with the authorial fictional or non-fictional styles. The significance of interpreting of literary themes, consequently, unravels the necessity of exploring the text’s implied meanings and ideas which reflect the authors’ obsession with depicting reality as it is via precise narrative descriptions. The study’s methodology will be a textual-contextual analysis of the selected work’s themes to provide the reader’s with obtrusive example of how themes play a crucial role in identifying the critical nature of literature as a whole

Drivers of Land Accessibility: A Narration From Residents in Rural Border Communities of Nigeria
Get PDFThe study investigates the drivers of land accessibility in rural border communities of Nigeria with a case study of border communities of Ipokia and Yewa North Local Government Area, Ogun State, Nigeria. The study adopted the use of multistage sampling techniques in the selection of 331 respondents from the study area. Data that were obtained through questionnaire administration were analysed using descriptive (frequency table, percentages, bar, and pie charts) and inferential (T-test, binary logistics regression) statistics. Through the use of binary logistics regression, the study discovers that traditional beliefs, social connection, availability of land, tenure practices, gender, purpose of land acquisition, financial condition, and cost of acquiring land were the significant drivers of land accessibility in rural border communities of the study area. The study recommends that the government and stakeholders in land administration and management should put more effort into reducing the effects of the drivers influencing land accessibility by formulating and implementing flexible policies that can encourage secure access to land in the study area
The Motivation to English Vocabulary Acquisition: A Comparative Study of English and Non-English Major Students in Vocational University
Get PDFIt is noticeable that the plethora of researches has investigated motivation to acquire English vocabularies only in general universities. There is still scarce research that compares the motivation of English vocabulary learning between English major and non-English major students in vocational university. Therefore, it is not known if students who choose to study English as their major differ from those who are required to study English as the minor component of their wider degree in vocational education.Drawing on SDT, the study reports on the findings of a quantitative study designed to investigate the comparison in motivation for English vocabulary acquisition demonstrated by English major (n = 94) and non-English major students (n = 87) in a vocational university. The study revealed that both English major and non-English major students in vocational university tend to possess high levels of Identified Regulation(ID) and External Regulation motivation(EX) to acquire English vocabulary. English major students felt more intrinsically motivated and less mandatory to learn English.This paper argues that it is imperative for lecturers in vocational university to assist students in internalising these External Regulation motivation (EX) to English vocabulary acquisition to prepare for their future profession, which contributes to fostering students’ intrinsic aspirations to English vocabulary acquisition
Cognition and Organisational Resilience Among Small Scale Enterprises in Lagos State

However, these enterprises grapple with multifaceted challenges, from economic fluctuations to regulatory intricacies. Against the backdrop of recent global disruptions, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the ability of SMEs to adapt and persevere has assumed paramount importance. To investigate the relationship between cognition and organizational resilience, a conscious sampling method was employed, involving 500 participants from diverse sectors. A structured questionnaire, featuring Likert scale questions, was utilized to collect data on demographic characteristics, cognition (independent variable), and organizational resilience (dependent variable). The results unequivocally establish a significant and positive correlation between cognition and organizational resilience among SMEs in Lagos State. This research underscores the imperative for SME owners and managers to prioritize the development of cognitive skills and strategies within their organizations. It emphasizes the role of cognition in decision-making, opportunity recognition, and navigating the complexities of entrepreneurship. Recommendations include fostering an environment that encourages cognitive diversity, critical thinking, and continuous learning among employees and entrepreneurs. Moreover, addressing the psychological challenges inherent in entrepreneurial settings, such as stress and information overload, is vital for enhancing cognitive processes and, consequently, firm performance

A Study on the Translation of “Red” Based on the Chinese-English Parallel Corpus of A Dream of Red Mansions
Get PDFIn “A Dream of Red Mansions”, an abundance of color words associated with “red” reflects the significance of the color in Chinese traditional culture. This study introduces a novel perspective by delving into the translational aspects of “red” color words through corpus translatology. Utilizing the existing Chinese-English parallel corpus of A Dream of Red Mansions, the paper conducts a quantitative analysis of the “red” words in the combined versions of Hawkes and Minford and Yang Xianyi and Danaidie. The analysis explores translation methods and strategies employed for “red” words in different contexts. The findings reveal that Hawkes primarily employs domestication and free translation, whereas Yang Xianyi leans towards foreignization and literal translation. At the lexical level, it becomes evident that varying cultural and linguistic disparities prompt translators to adapt and modify their strategies accordingly.

It has another impact on the dollar standard currency system since the financial crisis in 2008. The system is in urgent need of reform and has become a consensus. With the promotion and deepening of the Belt and Road, China's internationalization has brought new opportunities and challenges to the internationalization of RMB. Both the economic problems of the system itself and the behavior of the core countries eventually led to the failure of the gold standard and Bretton Woods. China should learn from the failure of the past systems, clarify the positioning of RMB in the international monetary system, and promote the reform of the current international monetary system. Meanwhile, the internationalization of RMB should closely follow the national development strategy, further deepen it through Greater Bay Area policy, achieve a two-way promotion with the Belt and Road, and steadily advance it to serve the real economy

Since its full implementation in 2019, the system has played a positive role in improving litigation efficiency and saving judicial resources. In order to further strengthen the effective diversion of cases and explore the introduction of the plea leniency system at the investigation stage at the source of cases, Inspection authority should intervene in the investigation cases in advance, and consider making a relatively non-prosecution decision for light cases where the perpetrators voluntarily plead guilty and obtain the understanding of the victims; for light cases without the victim’s understanding, Inspection authority puts forward a definitive sentencing proposal, which is confirmed by the court. The introduction of the plea leniency system in investigation stage is conducive to saving judicial resources to the maximum extent and realizing justice value. In exploring the path of introducing the l the plea leniency system in the investigation stage, it is necessary to strengthen the participation of lawyers in the investigation stage, explore and put forward certain sentencing suggestions, strengthen the judicial review of Inspection authority in advance intervention, and explore the realization of the court’s confirmation effect of the confession statement at the legislative level
