The Social Discrimination in Alice Mead’s “Girl of Kosovo”
Get PDFThis study aims to describe the discrimination found in Alice Mead's novel Girl of Kosovo. The author uses the sociology of literature approach as a field of study of literary works. This approach is an approach in literary studies whose goal is to get a picture of the state of society through literary works. The research method applied to Girl of Kosovo is qualitative research. The primary data source used in this research is the novel Girl of Kosovo by Alice Mead. Data collection technique used is the technique of reading notes. This study uses reading techniques and note-taking techniques as data collection techniques. A qualitative descriptive analysis technique was used in this study by analysing data on the description of social discrimination contained in the Girl of Kosovo novel accompanied by quotations to clarify and strengthen the problem under study. The results of the research show that there are several types of discrimination contained in the novel Girl of Kosovo by Alice Mead. Every form of discrimination raised is directly proven through textual data derived from excerpts from the novel

Les expressions linguistiques qui marquent la cohésion textuelle ont toutes des fonctions référentielles. Dans cet article, nous nous intéressons à la notion d’anaphore comme procédé référentiel et au présentatif c’est dans ses fonctions référentielles diverses. Le présentatif c’est est fréquemment employé dans les textes écrits des apprenants du français langue étrangère (FLE) et son utilisation s’accompagne souvent de nombreuses infractions et ambiguïtés référentielles. Le présent article vise à déduire la nature des erreurs constatées, proposer divers ongles d’interprétations possibles et ainsi mieux cerner les processus cognitifs engagés par l’auteur dans la production du texte écrit. L’analyse que nous avons menée révèle que la référence à un univers préétabli par l’auteur peut être compromise par différents aspects. Sur le plan cognitif, l’intériorisation des relations hiérarchiques lexicales s’avère incomplète et la conception du contenu accessible digressive

Unpacking the Nexus Between Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Sit-at-Home Order and Socio-economic Development in South-East Nigeria
Get PDFAn environment devoid of security threats is not only needed for human existence but also a critical factor that determines the socio-economic development of every country, region or state. Drawing on this perspective, this article aims to examine the correlation between Indigenous People of Biafra Sit-at-home order and socio-economic development in South-east Nigeria. This was a qualitative study driven by secondary data which include newspapers, journal articles and conference papers among others. The findings of the study reveal that Indigenous People of Biafra Sit-at-home order has significantly affected economic activities and human security in the South-east but has no significant effect on academic activities in the region. It is also revealed that efforts put in by various governments (federal and state governments) to stop the order have not yielded any concrete result. The practical implication of the above is that economic growth and human security in the South-east will continue to be a mirage until this issue is seen to be addressed. Arising from the above, this article majorly recommends for a dialogue between the federal government and Indigenous People of Biafra so as to return the region to its progressive path
Contextual Correlates of Adaptability in E-C Translation of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Get PDFAdaptation Theory proposed by Jef Verschueren is always applied to carry out translation studies. Translation scholars at home and abroad conduct researches from four angles: contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability, and salience of adaptation processes. Contextual correlates include communicative context and linguistic context. By analyzing typical sentences in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe based on the above two kinds of contexts, this paper aims to better understand the manifestation of contextual correlates of adaptability in English-Chinese translation of this book. Besides, the process of adaptation to ingredients of communicative context and linguistic context, such as mental world, social world, physical world, contextual cohesion, intertextuality and sequencing is analyzed.
A Corpus-Based Study of China’s Diplomatic Image in the English Translation of China’s Diplomatic Speeches
Get PDFIn the international arena, different countries have various perceptions of China’s image. To explore the diplomatic image of China, we examine the use of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and modal verbs in the corpus of regular press conferences of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2020-2022 and Chinese government reports, and seeks to reflect the diplomatic image of China in specific contexts as well as accurate data. The paper finds that China’s diplomatic image is generally consistent with what is presented domestically, and that China’s image is not deliberately created. China adheres to its national sovereignty and has a strong sense of a human community with a shared future, actively cooperates with many countries and is committed to the progress and development of the world

Enhancing Learners’ Critical Thinking Ability Through Pedagogical Translation in English Language Teaching
Get PDFThe paper explores the strategic use of pedagogical translation in English language teaching (ELT) to enhance Chinese learners’ critical thinking ability. Different from the studies on translation theories and the teaching of translation to English majors, the present study assumes that pedagogical translation is a rational activity which can effectively help learners understand the source language and target language precisely. The translation of four different word categories is discussed and analyzed by using examples. It is concluded that learners can improve their critical thinking ability and language competence through designed translation activities
Literary Tropes: The Battle of Words in Illness
Get PDFLiterary tropes are a universal type of creative expression that should be explored given how they capture the intensity of individuals suffering from severe disease. This study, therefore, aims to respond to two important questions: Are literary motifs prevalent in the compulsive thoughts of those suffering from diseases? What literary conventions appear to be predominant? Most of the studies that examine literary elements like metaphor and diseases seem to favour the medical personnel, Susan Sontag (1978;1988); Gavin Francis (2017). However, this paper critically analyses how John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars depicts patients with mental operations. By analysing the creative mental operations of affected characters, the study objectifies the presence of literary tropes in those operations and makes a proposition toward their identification. Derrida’s theory of deconstruction is used for the: critical analysis and distilling of literary tropes. Meanings are implicit and deducible in creative mental operations; this substantiates the essence of artistic undertakings
An Empirical Study on the Application of ESA Teaching Model in Middle School English Reading Classes
Get PDFListening, speaking, reading and writing are the four basic skills of English competence, among which the importance of English reading in English teaching is prominent. However, there are some problems in middle school English reading teaching under the exam-oriented background, such as teacher-dominated classroom, students’ mechanical learning, dull teaching process, which make it difficult to motivate students’ learning motivation in English reading classes, thus ultimately affect the effectiveness of teaching activities.In view of the above problems, based on the methods of questionnaire survey, reading pre-test and post-test, and two-week teaching experiments with 20 students of Grade 7 from a local school as subjects, this research tries to introduce ESA teaching model into middle school English classrooms and analyze the specific influence of ESA teaching model on students’ reading interest, classroom participation and reading achievement through a two-week teaching experiment. Through the statistical analysis of the data collected from the questionnaires and reading tests with the help of SPSS, it has been found that under the influence of ESA teaching model, students in the experimental group are more interested in reading classes, more active in classroom participation, and are more satisfied with their reding performance than those from the control group. Most important of all, the experimental group has achieved higher grades in the reading test after the experiment than the control group. Therefore, it can be concluded that the application of ESA teaching model in the middle school English reading classes can not only help teachers create relaxing and successful reading classes, but also help students to improve their reading competence, thus maximizing the learning outcome in English classes
