"Who am I?" The Identity Construction and Preference of Chinese Students in England: A Case Study of the Chinese Students in Durham University
Get PDFThis study aims to explore how Chinese students from Durham University engaged in two-way with Chinese society and England local society from the sociocultural perspective, and how they located and constructed their own cultural identities therein. 10 semi-structured interviews were applied to analyze how Chinese students participated in and maintained interaction with the host England society. With a combination of literature on the ‘production of identity’ (Hall, 2007), cultural adaptation (Brown & Holloway, 2008), and ‘cleft habitus’ (Bourdieu & Nice, 2008), the authors conducted an analysis to interpret ‘who am I?’ and the trend of identity construction and preference of Chinese students who studied in the UK concerning social engagements, perceptions of host culture adaptation and social interactive network. The result showed that the interviewees continuously extended and conferred new signs and experiences to enrich their cultural identities through their own understanding and interpretations of cultural attributes, interpretations of the local living environment and the forms of social interactions, which displayed a sensitive, and complex construction and preference of cultural identity they possessed
Self-Presentation of the Female Body in the Age of Selfies: Maria Lassnig and her “body-Awareness” Self-Portraits
Get PDFAustrian artist Maria Lassnig (1919-2014) is world-famous for her self-portraits and “body awareness” theory, and became one of the most important artists in the West after the war in 1945. Influenced by the patriarchal social background of that time, Lassnig created numerous self-portraits with creative and feminist political implications in response to the era in which she lived. Hers works have made great achievements in the field of artistic creation. In 1988, she became the first female artist to win the Austrian National Award. In 2013, she won the Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale. Lassnig presents her self-portrait through “two ways of existence”, as “weird face” and “monster image”, which focuses on the female body and refuses to simply depict the appearance. In the age of selfies, where external beauty is recorded through technology, Lassnig’s paintings present hers inner multi-layered true feelings, becoming a more “perfect art”
The Effect of Relaxation Therapy in Reducing Anxiety and Tension Among Verbal Persons With Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Get PDFThe current study aimed to investigate the effect of relaxation therapy in reducing anxiety and tension among verbal persons with autism spectrum disorder. The study included 3 cases (2 males and 1 female) in the city of Riyadh, kingdom of Saudi Arabia. To achieve the goal of the study, the researchers designed an anxiety and tension scale and verified its validity and reliability, in addition to construct a relaxation therapy program. To answer the study question, a single-case design approach was used. The results indicated that relaxation therapy helped reduce anxiety and tension. The study recommended using relaxation therapy also with non-verbal persons with autism spectrum disorder, as well as targeting younger ages
The Degree of Teachers and Parents Meet The Special Counselling Needs of Gifted Students in the State of Kuwait
Get PDFThe current study aimed to assess the degree to which teachers and parents meet the special counseling needs of talented students in the State of Kuwait. The study included 50 parents and 50 teachers. To achieve the goal of the study, the researchers developed a scale of meeting the special needs, and it was presented in two versions, one for parents and the other for teachers. The validity and reliability have had been verified. The results of teachers indicated that meeting academic counseling needs ranked first, while meeting family needs ranked last. While the results indicated that the parents’ ranked family needs in the first place, and the psychological needs came in the last place. The study recommended the importance of raising awareness of meeting the special needs of gifted students
Conflict Between Parental Monitoring and Peer Group on the Academic Performance of Secondary School Students in Ondo State, Nigeria
Get PDFAcademic activities are geared towards ensuring that students obtain comprehensive knowledge of educational objectives. There has been argument that the extent to which these objectives are attained or achieved in school, is therefore determined by the level of their parental engagement in the school activities, and the peer group they share similar characteristics with in school or even at home which in turn are shown in their academic performance. This study therefore look at the conflicts between the two variables. The study adopted a descriptive research design of survey type. The target population of this study is both the teachers and the students of selected schools and the estimated population is six hundred (600). A structured, self-constructed questionnaire was used as the instrument for collection of data for the study. The questionnaire is divided in two (2) sections A and B. Section “A” of the instrument contains respondent’s socio demographic information such as gender, occupation and the likes. Section B focuses on items or statements generated on the variables of the study as contained in the research questions. The findings from the study show that the children of the parents who monitor the academic progress of their wards make them to perform well and to choose good friends that results in joining peer group that enhances their performances in school. It is therefore, concluded that parental monitoring is an antidote to joining good peer group as well as good academic performance. It recommended among others, that curriculum designer should design curriculum in such a way that it will force or encourage parental monitoring of the academic performance of their wards

Liniang Du and Portia: An Interpretation of the Triumph of Women’s Rights in a Patriarchal Society
Get PDFXianzu Tang and William Shakespeare were the representative figure of 17th century in both English and Chinese academic circles respectively. There are thought-provoking in the comparative study of two writings. In this paper, by comparing the Xianzu Tang’s Liniang Du in The Peony Pavilion and Portia in William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice in the marriage on the common pursuit of love, we study their resistance against the patriarchal, dominate their marriage and help their husbands. They show off women’s wisdom and courage and they are the image of women in the patriarchal society’s victory.
