Migration, Marriage and the Narrative of (Dis)location in African Short Stories

    Get PDF
This paper interrogates marriage and family reunion not only as a strategic site of negotiating and mediating legibility of migrants, but also where residency and citizenship in their destination countries are politicised and contested in Chimamanda Adichie’s “Arrangers of Marriage”, a story in The Thing Around your Neck and some selected stories in Chika Unigwe’s Better Never than Late. As literary research, this paper relies on close reading and analysis of some extrapolations in some selected stories in the two collections, using Postcolonial concepts of ‘othering’ and unhomliness’. The study reveals that, order than its cardinal purposes of reunification and family formation, some migration marriages are fraught terrains for negotiating and formalising citizenship and permanent residency at migration destinations. It is against this backdrop that the paper concludes that migration processes could be regulated, if potential migrant couples are always made to prove the authenticity of their union, which could be detectable by examining their care-giving commitments and/ or procreation intentions

Application of Gideon Toury’s Translation Norms Theory in Translation Teaching With Special Reference to the Post-Editing of the English Version of High-Quality Development of Meteorology Roadmap (2022-2035)

    Get PDF
The current research aims to investigate the practical application of Gideon Toury’s Translation Norms Theory in the post-editing of meteorological texts between Chinese and English. Using an empirical approach, the analysis examines the norms, regularities as well as conventions that guide the translation process and how they influence the translation of meteorological texts. The study analyzes a real proofreading task commissioned by the government to determine how translators should apply Toury’s norms theory in the post-editing process. The present empirical study shall provide valuable insights into the translation of meteorological texts and highlight the importance of linguistic norms in achieving accurate and effective translations, which could also provide some practical implications for translation teaching and translator training

Evaluating the Challenges of Unavailability of Safe Water in Omogwu Through Theatre for Development Approach

    Get PDF
Rural areas in Nigeria have been faced with several social amenity’s issues over of the years. One of such issues is lack of safe water for consumption. Some of the factors responsible for these problems seem to be the inability of the people to protect and maintain their water sources like rivers, lakes and the few water projects that were built for them by either individuals or the government. As a result of the aforementioned problems, the people depend on unsafe water for drinking and cooking. Thus, they are faced with certain water born-diseases. Obviously, the need to address these problems is sacrosanct. It is based on this backdrop that the study seeks to investigate the potential of Theatre for Development in addressing the issues in context using Omogwu Community, Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State as paradigm. The paper adopted oral interview technique of the qualitative research methodology to gather its data. Through this method the researchers interacted orally with relevant respondents in the target area, using a tape recorder to gather their responses and transcripted them into written document through the use of note books and pen. The results realized from the findings revealed that rural areas in Nigeria, due to certain factors have no access to safe water and they are also challenged with issues of water born-diseases. The work concludes that Theatre for Development has the potential to address the problems of access to safe water and the related consequences on the people of Omogwu, Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State. Hence, it recommends that the approach should be employed to address the identified challenges for a safe water

A Discussion of Bilateral Rearing Based on The Institutions for Reproduction

    Get PDF
As mentioned in the book The Institutions for Reproduction (Shengyu Zhidu in Chinese) written by Fei Xiaotong, physiologic rearing is unilateral (i.e., physiologic rearing is fully conducted by the mother) while social rearing is bilateral (i.e., both parents foster their child jointly). Because parents have different divisions of labor in life, they may have different levels of influence on the perception, personality, mind, character, and other aspects of their child. The absence of any parent in rearing may leave regrets for the child’s childhood. Nowadays, some typical phenomena are destroying the completeness of the bilateral rearing structure. For instance: Owing to the high divorce rate, many children have to live with one parent; with the heavy pressure of life, one parent or both parents work away from home constantly, while leaving the child at home; some parents even entrust the task of looking after children to a babysitter or child-care center. These social facts are inevitable, but it is quite necessary to try to create a good, healthy, and complete bilateral rearing growth space with mental interaction for children

    Get PDF
With the rapid development of information technology, its application in the field of education is more and more extensive. This paper aims to explore the effective integration strategies of information technology and college English teaching, so as to improve the quality of college English teaching and the ability of students’ English application. This paper puts forward some effective integration strategies, including using information technology to enrich teaching resources, building multiple interactive teaching models, implementing personalized learning and improving teaching evaluation system. Under the guidance of modern teaching concepts, with the support of the information environment and the use of modern teaching methods, information-based teaching is to scientifically arrange various teaching links and teaching elements to achieve the purpose of optimizing the teaching process. The center of information-based teaching process is the process of integrating information technology and subject teaching, and the main objects are teachers and students. Information-based teaching mainly expands learning resources through online media materials, and strengthens students’ autonomous learning ability and situational learning methods. At the same time, teachers fully grasp the information-based teaching method and lead students to better master knowledge

Assessment of the Translation and Post-editing of Machine Translation (MT) with Special Reference to Chinese-English Translation

    Get PDF
The current research reports the real performance of machine translation engines (DeepL and GPT-3.5) in translating Classical Chinese into Modern English as well as the post-editing quality of GPT-3.5. The statistical data reveals that: 1) machine translation saves more time and processing energy than human translators; 2) GPT-3.5’s performance in Chinese-English translation is better than Deepl, and it has the advantage of post-editing and self-evolution; 3) Human translators’ ability of semantic processing is superior than DeepL and GPT-3.5. Thus human translators and machine translation engines shall have a good cooperation in improving the accuracy, comprehensibility and fluency of translated texts

    Get PDF
The Rayya speech community, a speaker of the North Ethio-Semitic Tigrinya language and inhabiting the Southern Tigray Zone in Ethiopia, has a long tradition of blessings ingrained in their social fabric. A blessing, which is an inclusive, efficacious, and power-oriented speech act, deals with benedictions and compliments and is used to demonstrate the good disposition of the addressor to the addressee/s. In light of this, this study attempted to provide a descriptive account of the semantics and pragmatics of blessing expressions in Rayya Tigrinya, a variety of Tigrinya. Accordingly, blessing expressions’ denotative and connotative meanings used in general and particular contexts were presented and discussed. To this end, a total of twenty-four key partakers, ten males and fourteen females, aged 45-85, were purposefully selected. The obtained natural data via semi-structured interviews and participant observation were checked out and validated through introspection. The collected data were then described and analyzed through a linguistic descriptive method. The results revealed that blessing expressions are predominantly metaphorical, devoid of their literal meanings. Security, peace, love, health, wealth, success, happiness, lineage, and unity, all of which are basic, are the most general and recurrent subjects expounded in the blessing expressions used in both contexts. Throughout the given instances, blessing expressions are made either implicitly or explicitly appealing to the supernatural for the good wishes to be effective, which also makes them religious
