    The Analysis of the Impact of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002’s Anti-Money Laundering Provisions on Bankers

    This article examines the impact of the anti-money laundering (AML) regime established by the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 (POCA) on bankers in the United Kingdom. Through a critical analysis of legal provisions and empirical evidence, this study finds that POCA, while elevating bankers’ professional responsibilities and reinforcing their role in safeguarding financial integrity, has also subjected them to considerable operational and legal pressures. The analysis identifies key challenges, including heightened personal liability, onerous compliance burdens, and ethical dilemmas in client relationships. These challenges arise primarily from ambiguous regulatory guidance and the practice of defensive over-reporting. The study concludes that this well-intentioned framework has inadvertently transformed the banker’s role, creating a fundamental tension between their traditional advisory functions and their duties as de facto frontline regulatory agents. It concludes that striking a balance between these competing demands is crucial for the effectiveness of the AML regime and the long-term sustainability of banking practice

    Towards a Vision of the Self: Knowing One’s Self and Others in Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse

    Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse tackles venerable philosophical issues. The novel depicts the characters’ incessant search for knowledge of themselves and others. Knowledge of one’s self and others is a goal that eludes characters. Lily Briscoe, Mr., and Mrs. Ramsay all fail in their quest for each other and become confronted with their epistemological deficiencies for one another. This article draws on Emmanuel Levinas’ perceptions of the relationship between the Self and the Other to examine the question of knowing one’s self and others in To the Lighthouse.  This article seeks to illustrate how the self is burdened by the impossibility of knowing the other. This study also seeks to illuminate how Virginia Woolf’s authorial image of the vision functions as a moment of self-knowledge for both Mrs. Ramsay and Lily Briscoe.

This undertaking requires problem-focused methodologies that scientifically examine and appropriately reconcile discursive relationships across three key dimensions: tradition versus modernity, Chinese versus Western paradigms, and state versus societal frameworks. Historically, the evolution of this discourse system has progressed through three distinct phases: radical democratic-political discourse, economic rationalist discourse, and contemporary humanistic-legal discourse. Guided by the integrated principles of heritage-national character, originality-epochal relevance, and systematic-disciplinary rigor, the construction necessitates comprehensive conceptualization and implementation strategies

    ETHNIC NATIONALISM AND REGIONAL INSECURITY IN NIGERIA: A STUDY OF SOUTHEAST GEOPOLITICAL ZONE

    Nigeria’s heterogeneous composition, encompassing numerous ethnicities, cultures, and languages, has since independence in 1960 been characterized by centrifugal tensions stemming from claims of social inequality and the exclusion of various groups by different ethnic communities. Despite the volume of scholarly studies on ethnic nationalism, much has yet to be done on investigating the impact of ethnic nationalism on regional insecurity in the Southeast, Nigeria. This study therefore investigated the nexus between ethnic nationalism and regional insecurity in southeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria with a view of evaluating the driving forces of ethnic nationalism and their extent on regional security in the South-East, Nigeria. The study employed Relative Deprivation theory and adopted survey research design, utilizing both primary and secondary sources of data along with systematic random and purposive sampling techniques. The data collected were analysed with descriptive (mean as X̄ and standard deviations as SD) and inferential statistics (Simple regression). The simple regression analysis indicated a strong positive relationship between ethnic nationalism and regional insecurity (R = 0.85, R2 = 0.72, p < 0.001), with ethnic nationalism explaining approximately 72% of the variation in regional insecurity, and the model being statistically significant. The study concluded that ethnic nationalism in Nigeria is inevitable; and is promoted by ethnic competition for resources, struggles for political power within the federal system, and perceptions of socioeconomic marginalization; and recommend that appropriate democratic institutions and structures, which will address all the driving forces of ethnic nationalism and regional insecurity, should be in place for political accommodation and management of social diversities and ethnic differences in Nigeria

    Rain Against Glass: The Objective Correlative in Ocean Vuong’s “Aubade with Burning City”

    This paper examines how Ocean Vuong’s poem “Aubade with Burning City” utilizes the literary device of the objective correlative to convey emotional and historical trauma. Drawing on T.S. Eliot’s theory, which argues that emotion is best expressed through a set of symbolic objects and images rather than direct statement, the research analyzes Vuong’s imagery—snowfall in Saigon, the sound of “White Christmas,” and the motif of a burning city—as emotionally charged corollaries to love, war, and loss. By blending personal memory with national catastrophe, Vuong expands the objective correlative beyond Eliot’s original conception, situating it within a transnational and postcolonial framework. The study applies a close reading approach alongside insights from trauma theory and modernist criticism to demonstrate how Vuong’s sensory and formal techniques engage the reader in an embodied experience of dislocation and remembrance. Ultimately, the paper argues that Vuong reinvents the objective correlative to reflect the complexities of diasporic identity and collective memory, offering a powerful model for how contemporary poetry can ethically represent trauma. This research contributes to a growing body of literature on affect, memory, and formal innovation in twenty-first-century poetry

    Comparaison des dissertations d’entrée à l’université entre la Chine et la France: l’exemple de 2023 à 2025

    Ces dernières années, les sujets de dissertation du Gaokao mettent de plus en plus l’accent sur la capacité de réflexion critique et l’esprit d’innovation. Toutefois, un écart subsiste par rapport à la dissertation philosophique du baccalauréat. Les deux dissertations, en tant qu’épreuves d’entrée à l’université, présentent des enjeux comparables. Or, les recherches comparatives existantes se limitent souvent à une description des différences, sans analyser en profondeur leurs causes. Dans ce contexte, la présente étude adopte une approche comparative afin d’explorer les différences entre les sujets du Gaokao et ceux du baccalauréat, dans l’objectif de fournir des références utiles à l’enseignement de la dissertation dans le cadre du Gaokao. Le travail s’organise en trois parties: la première présente les différences de forme et de contenu ; la deuxième analyse leurs causes à travers trois dimensions — facteurs politiques et culturels, facteurs liés aux systèmes éducatifs et facteurs pédagogiques ; la troisième propose, à partir de l’expérience française, des pistes d’inspiration pour la Chine. Deux orientations principales sont mises en avant : améliorer l’enseignement de la dissertation et renforcer la formation à l’esprit critique des élèves

    Investigating Moroccan EFL Teachers’ Attitudes Towards the Effectiveness of In-person CPD in the Age of Digital Technology

    Amid the rise of digital technology, people have become more connected than ever. Platforms have emerged as critical learning and training environments for education. This study aimed to investigate Moroccan EFL teachers’ attitudes towards the effectiveness of in-person continuous professional development (CPD) in the age of digital technology (D.T.). It examines the shifts from traditional ways of CPD, conferences, and workshops to digital technology for professional development (PD). This research study surveyed the attitudes of Moroccan EFL teachers’ perceptions and preferences regarding face-to-face CPD and digital technology-based CPD. The research methodology used a quantitative survey design, based on questionnaires and Likert scales, to collect data from a representative sample of Moroccan EFL teachers. The findings showed that despite Moroccan EFL teachers’ value of in-person CPD for collaboration opportunities and interaction while taking their CPD, they expressed positive perceptions towards using digital technologies for their PD. The study emphasized the need for blended CPD programs that include in-person and digital technology modes to achieve Moroccan EFL teachers’ diverse preferences and needs. Aligning with the digital technology advancements and the benefits offered by D.T. in the field of education in terms of accessibility, self-paced learning, variety, and interaction, it is recommended to design tailored CPD programs that suit the needs of different age groups and educational backgrounds of Moroccan EFL teachers. This study contributes to checking the possibility of integrating digital technology in the process of CPD, and provides insight to the Moroccan policymakers and educational institutions to enhance the strategies of PD

    Financial Education and Economic Growth in a Developing University Community: Issues and Pathway

    In a country where financial literacy remains a pressing concern, particularly among developing universities communities, the quest for economic growth and financial security has never been more critical. The paper explore how siting a university in a community have significantly improved the economic wellbeing of their host communities through knowledge-driven, business transactions, and lease of property among others. Despite these economic gains, the establishment of institutions has subjected households in the host communities to untold economic hardship as a result of the expropriation of their ancestral farmland. The establishment also led to high cost of living, scarcity of shelter, food, transportation, among other things. The paper further explores the intricacies of financial literacy and uncovers the impact on the developing university communities and it effect in contributing to the lives of thousands of Nigerian tertiary students and contributing to national development

    The Effect of Institutional Manpower Training on Non-Teaching Staff Performance in Nigerian Federal Polytechnics

    Improvement of employees’ performance is not limited to adaptability to new technology and production factors alone, but also depends on investing and training the employees as well. This is crucial, as it allows organisations to maximize the potential of their employees for optimal performance. The study used the descriptive research design through a structured questionnaire. The population of the study consists of 470 non-teaching staff of The Federal Polytechnic of Ilaro. Using the Taro Yamane formula, 216 was derived as the sample size. The study utilized quantitative methodology for its analysis, employing frequency table and percentage to analyse the data gathered. The findings revealed that the institution provides adequate opportunities for professional training to the non-teaching staff, the institution offers digital literacy program to enhance non-teaching staff computer skills, and that resistance to change and reluctance to participate in training program among non-teaching staff, inadequate evaluation and feedback mechanism among others limit the effectiveness of institutional manpower training program for non-teaching staff. The study concludes that there is a significant positive relationship with between institutional manpower training and performance of non-teaching staff in the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro. Based on these findings, the study recommends that adequate institutional manpower planning methods should be put in place, the institution should continue updating its manpower plan curriculum in accordance with international best practices, and management should ensure that institutional manpower training policy is performance oriented, as this will significantly contribute to its success of the institution
