The Syntax of Backgrounding Controversial Issues in Media Discourse: A Critical Analysis of New York Times COVID-19 Reports About China
This paper is concerned with the use of relative clauses in New York Times COVID-19 reports on China, aiming to reveal the manipulative strategies employed in media discourse in establishing a link between persuasive argumentation and the discourse functions of relative clauses. The study finds that through syntactically backgrounding potentially controversial issues in relative clauses regarding China’s Covid containment, reporters reduce the readers to accept the tacit truth of the presupposed propositions, thus enhancing the acceptance and manipulation of their political argumentation. The study further shows that relative clauses, by virtue of providing causal-explanatory links, facilitate a biased interpretation to occupy readers’ political cognitive space. The study further suggests a modification of the function taxonomy of relevance relative clauses on the basis of Loock (2007). Offering evidence from mass communication, our critical analysis is expected to shed new light on the link between syntax and manipulation
Study on the Chinese Translation of Emily Dickinson’s Poems from the Perspective of Eco-translatology: Taking Zhou Jianxin’s Selected Poems of Emily Dickinson (601-900) as an Example
Emily Dickinson is one of the pioneers of American modernist poetry, and 18 Chinese translations have been published so far, but some translations have problems such as language mistranslation, cultural misunderstanding, style deviation, etc. From the perspective of the textual transplant theory of Eco-translatology, this paper comprehensively interprets the translation strategy of Zhou Jianxin’s Chinese translation, Selected Poems of Emily Dickinson (601-900), in three stages, namely, the source-text selection, the translated text ecological construction, and the translated text survival, before, during and after translation, respectively, trying to show the characteristics of the ecological existence of the translation, and points out that Zhou’s translation fully reflects the three stages of textual transplant, i.e, the “whole life” cycle, which is an excellent example of ecological translation. It is expected that this study will shed some light on eco-translation criticism of English-Chinese poetry translation.
Study on National Image From Perspective of Skopos Theory: Take the English Version of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China as Example
This study examines the role of translation in shaping China’s national image, with a specific focus on the English translation of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China. Despite China’s active use of translation to project a positive image, a discernible gap exists between its intended portrayal and the Western perception resulting from these translation projects. The study employs Skopos theory to analyse the translation strategies, their impact on representing Chinese culture and policies, and the images promoted. Through the analysis of characteristic words, idioms, proverbs, and poetry loaded with China’s national image genes, two key questions guide the inquiry: 1) What national images are promoted in Xi Jinping: The Governance of China? 2) How are the translation rules of Skopos theory applied in the English translation?Content analysis reveals strict adherence to Skopos theory’s rules, identifying seven thematic representations through which the translation shapes China’s image. The study concludes that the English version constructs China’s national image overseas as a friendly and benevolent neighbour, democratic and rule of law-oriented, committed to peaceful development, assuming major power responsibilities, nurturing great dreams, prioritizing the people, and exhibiting cultural confidence. This research underscores the vital role of translation in influencing China’s global image and contributes to a nuanced understanding of how Skopos theory guides this process

Based on the application of TPACK in the field of education in China, this paper focuses on the investigation of the current situation of teachers’ TPACK in vocational colleges and the practical exploration of teachers’ TPACK ability training mode. The survey finds that the overall TPACK level of teachers in higher vocational colleges is above the average level, but there is still room for improvement, among which subject content knowledge (CK) is the highest level in each dimension, and subject teaching knowledge (TPCK) is the lowest level. Gender, teaching age, professional title and information technology training are the important factors that affect the TPACK level of teachers in higher vocational colleges, but educational background has no significant effect. There are still some problems in the study of TPACK. It is necessary to further expand the research methods, explore the application of TPACK in various disciplines, and pay attention to the relationship between teachers’ TPACK and students’ learning. In order to improve the TPACK level of teachers, it is suggested that schools should strengthen the training of information technology for teachers, strengthen the construction of teachers, promote the reform of classroom teaching, optimize the curriculum system of normal education, do a good job in education and teaching practice, and introduce big data analysis methods to guide the development of teacher education. In a word, TPACK is of great significance and influence to modern education, and constantly improving teachers’ TPACK level is the key to education reform

Politics of Implementation: The Foray of National Gender Policy and Political Development of Women in South-west Nigeria
This paper contributes to the literature on the national gender policy context in Nigeria. It surveyed how policy strategies translated into active mainstreaming of women in the politics of governability of the country. It argued that balancing gender distribution in institutions of governance is premium on the need to deconstruct structurally and socio-culturally induced thinking of gender roles which made reflective gender performance a mirage in Nigeria. This mirrors the saying that “only the wearer knows where the shoe pinches”, that is women are aptly positioned to generate and situate congressional debate on core women-related questions. Drawing on descriptive methodology, empirical data were sought from 375 respondents including political parties [PDP & APC], CDAs and CSOs. Increased sensitization, community mobilization, and a conducive political environment were linked to the policy implementation while affirmative action, gender mainstreaming, and women in elected party positions were ongoing mirages in the history of post-authoritarian gender advocacy in Nigeria. These latter findings cast heavy doubt on the institutional ladder through which women can legislate for their course in the Nigerian polity
