The Politics of Defection: Cross-Carpeting and Its Threat to Electoral Legitimacy and Democratic Consolidation in Nigeria

The phenomenon of political defection in Nigeria has significant implications for electoral legitimacy and the consolidation of democracy. The study explores the dynamics of party defections and their impact on the political landscape, particularly during electoral cycles. Defections often lead to shifts in party power and influence, raising concerns about the stability of political parties and the integrity of electoral processes. This study examines the factors behind defections, including personal ambitions, ideological shifts, and the pursuit of political survival. It also addresses the repercussions of these defections on public trust in democratic institutions and the overall legitimacy of electoral outcomes. The study relies on Rational Choice Theory, arguing that the frequency and nature of defection have affected the integrity of the electoral process and weakened the institutional development of political parties. By analyzing recent case studies and electoral events, this research highlights underlying factors driving party defections, such as a lack of party ideologies, personal interests, and a weak regulatory framework, and also suggests the need for reforms aimed at addressing the challenges posed by defection, ultimately contributing to a more stable and credible democratic framework in Nigeria. The study concludes by recommending institutional and constitutional reforms, judicial enforcement, and political education as a yardstick to mitigate the growing threat of cross-carpeting in Nigeria

The Influence and Differences of Urban Layout in Tang and Song Dynasties on the Development of Merchants

The construction of cities has greatly influenced the development of commerce and trade not only today, but also in ancient times. The Tang Dynasty and the Song Dynasty were both the culmination of the unification and prosperity of ancient China. The city and square system of the Tang Dynasty promoted the centralized development of commodities, while the square system of the Song Dynasty gave rise to the embryonic form of free trade, which played a certain role in promoting the emergence and development of capitalism in the Ming Dynasty. Although the need for management by the ruling class state did not lead to the rapid development of Europe at the same time, both the urban and neighborhood systems were effective explorations for the development of commercial trade to a certain extent. It has extremely important reference and research value for the coordinated development of cities and trade today

Cultural Norms and Pragmatic Errors in Verbal Communication

Pragmatics is the study of how people effectively carry out verbal communication in a specific environment. Different cultures require different behaviors, which is a kind of cultural norms. Language and culture are closely linked. By understanding the relationship between language, culture and communication, this paper explores the manifestation of pragmatic errors in verbal communication, and emphasizes that in order to smooth cross-cultural communication and avoid pragmatic errors, the communicative parties should understand each other’s cultural background. In verbal communication, language should be combined with social situations and interpersonal relationships, and cultural norms should be observed

Address Terms and Power Play in Police-Suspect Interactions in Ibadan, Nigeria

The usage of address terms by police and suspects significantly impacts police-suspect discourse. Previous linguistic studies on police-suspect interaction focused on roles, contexts, concealments, contradictions and pragmatic strategies, paying sparse attention to the (mis)use of address terms by interactants during interrogation. This study examines the various uses of address terms in police-suspect interrogations, their discourse functions, and the implications of their usage in interrogative contexts. van Djik’s approach to Critical Discourse Analysis served as the theoretical framework for the data of this study. Fifteen interactions were purposively selected from the data gathered at the Oyo State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan, Nigeria. The findings revealed Minor Form of Address/ Hierarchical Titles, Bare Titles (BT), Hierachical Titles (HT), Titles + First Name (TFN), Generic First Name (GFN), Criminal Nickname (CN), Terms of Criminal Abuse (TCA) as the classified address terms used to establish relationship, signal and reinforce social status/power, reflect cultural values, construct and negotiate identity, and redirect discourse. The study revealed that address terms have social, pragmatic, cultural, linguistic and psychological implications on the interrogations. The study concludes that address term usage in police-suspect interrogations has socio-cultural significance and invariably impacts the flow of interrogations

Nature at the Edge of the Machine: Eco-Poetics and Technological Modernity in the Works of Alice Oswald and Adonis

This study looks at how nature and technology intersect in modern poetry, focusing on the works of Alice Oswald and Adonis. By exploring how these poets address the challenges and opportunities of today’s technological world, the research emphasizes the connection between ecological awareness and poetic creativity. Oswald’s nature-focused poetry highlights the life and vulnerability of the natural world. In contrast, Adonis weaves in elements of cultural memory and modernity, showing the clash between tradition and technological change. Through detailed textual analysis, this study examines whether technology is seen as a threat, a neutral element, or a potential partner for nature, revealing the poets’ thoughtful engagement with ecological and technological issues. The research uses an eco-poetic lens, combining literary analysis with environmental philosophy to explore the moral and artistic implications of modern life. Ultimately, the study shows that both poets express a vision where ecological awareness and technological understanding inform each other, providing important insights into how poetry engages with today’s environmental and technological conversations

The Degree of Practices Teachers of Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder to Dimensional Effective Teaching

The current study aimed to assess the level of teaching practices among teachers of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in terms of effective teaching dimensions. Additionally, it aimed to investigate the differences in teachers’ practices based on gender and years of experience. The study sample comprised (44) randomly selected male and female teachers out of a total of (67) teachers working with students with (ASD) in Amman, the capital city, representing 65% of the study population. To achieve the study objectives, the researcher developed an observation guide covering effective teaching dimensions (lesson planning, classroom management and organization, teaching methods, and assessment) consisting of (69) items. The reliability and validity of the guide were confirmed using appropriate statistical methods. The results indicated that the level of teaching practices among teachers of students with ASD in terms of effective teaching dimensions was moderate for all dimensions and the overall observation guide. Furthermore, there was no significant difference between male and female teachers in their competence levels related to the three dimensions of the observation guide. Similarly, the results showed no statistically significant differences in the mean scores of teachers based on their years of experience. The study concluded with several recommendations, including the need to enhance the competencies of teachers working with students with ASD through training programs. Additionally, teachers should be trained in using modern and effective teaching methods
