    Get PDF
This research conducted a writing experiment based on the Peerceptiv peer review system, collecting the first and second drafts of 47 non-English majors based on one topic, as well as the peer review comments and grades, the reliability of students’ evaluations, and average grades on each dimension from the Peerceptiv platform. Through a comparative analysis of the mean grades of students’ first and second drafts in various dimensions, it was noticed that students’ writing skills showed a slow upward trend through the multi-peer reviewing mode. Students’ second draft showed better quality than the first one. However, the overall rating reliability of the grades in various dimensions of the two drafts was low. Compared with the first draft, the credibility of the second draft’s peer review improved significantly in several dimensions. The reason lies in the students’ limited English proficiency and their negative attitudes resulting from relying solely on peer evaluation and grading mechanisms. Therefore, the combination of “teacher’s personalized guidance + online peer review + teacher evaluation” can maximize the advantages of the Peerceptiv platform and help writing teaching

The social media provides a space for interaction of people and languages across the globe. Today, the English language is the main medium of interaction on the social media rendering indigenous languages endangered. In spite of this, the Yoruba language continues to find its space. This paper, therefore, examines the impacts of the social media on the preservation of Yorùbá language and culture especially among the younger generation. This is with a view to ascertaining the degree of its relevance and their contributions to the revitalisation of Yorùbá language and culture. The study adopts Visser’s (2014) model of heritage revival which stresses the strategies and opportunities for cultural revival inherent in the social media and ethnolinguistic vitality theory (EVT) by Giles, Bourhis and Taylor (1977). Two major classifications are recognised; Nigeria and the diaspora platforms Facebook popular Yorùbá pages and Instagram such as BBC Yorùbá, Òwe àti Ẹwà Yorùbá pọ́nbélé, Yorùbá di wúrà, Àkànlò Èdè Yorùbá, Orúkọ Yorùba and Másòyìnbó. Proudly Yoruba German girl/ọmọ Ilorin and Yorùbá Pikin make up the platforms from the diaspora. The study finds that these platforms provide indigenous knowledge of the Yorùbá culture ranging from teaching of Yorùbá language, proverbs, traditional values, traditional music, not neglecting addressing current issues as they emerge in the society. The paper posits that this development will ensure the continued use of the Yorùbá language. The paper recommends that other languages should adopt these methods for the maintenance and revitalisation of their indigenous languages. Group administrators should address contemporary issues relating to the younger generation.

Re-evaluating the “Native Speaker” Goal in English Teaching as a Second Language in China

    Get PDF
The essay critiques the traditional goal of achieving native speaker (NS) proficiency in second language (L2) learning, highlighting its problematic and often unattainable nature. It examines difficulties in defining a native speaker, the unfairness of using NS as a universal goal, and the low likelihood of most learners achieving native-like proficiency. The essay also considers diverse learner motivations, using examples from English teaching in China. The essay proposes alternative goals like “language expertise,” “L2 user,” and “competent language user” as more realistic and fairer. It concludes by advocating for language learning goals tailored to individual needs and aspirations, moving beyond the rigid native speaker model to a more personalized and practical approach in L2 education

On the Patentability of Human Genes: Based on the Principle of Equal and Shared Benefits

    Get PDF
In the Myriad case, the US Supreme Court considered the BRAC gene to be a “natural product”, thereby denying its patentability, but in reality, it did not resolve the debate over whether the gene was “discovered” or “invented.”. To avoid such unnecessary debates, the recognition of human gene patents should not blindly adhere to the traditional recognition model of patent objects. It should be examined from the perspective of the purpose of the patent system and balancing the interests of all parties, avoiding the excessive cutting of basic knowledge by immature knowledge, and reasonably limiting the scope of gene patent objects

    Get PDF
As a unique symbol system, the human language is used to express people’s thoughts and feelings, carrying out the task of interpersonal communication. However, due to the different nation’s thinking ways, languages from different countries can be much different. For example, English generally emphasizes the separation of time and space, while Chinese lays emphasis on the homomorphism of time and space. That is why English folk songs and Yao folk songs, though typically rap arts created spontaneously by the working people, reveal great individuality from their own thoughts. Apart from the differences in language category, other differences are characterized by grammatical structure, syntactic structure, situational context, voice and mood etc. In order to better understand these two folk songs, this article aims at analyzing the language variants from vocabulary, syntax, word order and structure in both English folk songs and Yao folk songs, so that the interpretation for these language variants in the two folk songs can be deduced in synchronic as well as diachronic dimensions. Moreover, now that these language variants occur within a single language system, it is obvious that they do not affect their own coexistence and people’s reception effects
