    Get PDF
This study focuses on the management of English homework in the upper grades of primary schools under the Double Reduction policy. The Double Reduction policy is an initiative implemented by the Chinese government aimed at alleviating the burden of homework and extracurricular training for students in the compulsory education stage. This research takes F primary school in Tai’an City as a case study and empirically investigates the current status of English homework management in the upper grades of primary schools under the Double Reduction policy. The investigation reveals that there are issues such as lack of stratified design in homework, rigid content, simplistic types, and homogenized evaluation in the management of English homework in the upper grades of primary schools. In response to these challenges, this study proposes strategies for optimizing the management of English homework in the upper grades of primary schools from four perspectives: school, teachers, students, and families

A Study on the Application of Crowdsourcing Translation Model to College English Translation Teaching

    Get PDF
With the increasing popularity of international communication, translation plays an increasingly important role in English teaching. As a part of the comprehensive application ability of English, the cultivation of translation skills requires a lot of practice compared to other skills. However, in the current university translation teaching class, the time setting for this course is rather limited, and the translation practice actually provided to students is also not sufficient and systematic, which cannot put an active pole in the cultivation of translation skills. The crowdsourcing translation model emphasizes the collaboration of more than one person to complete a rather long translation task within a specified time. In this way, the crowdsourcing translation model not only enhances students’ collaborative learning and self-directed learning, but also provides them with a large number of opportunities for translation practice. Improving the quality of translations under the crowdsourcing translation model is also of great significance for the development of crowdsourcing model. This article describes the main characteristics of crowdsourcing translation model and analyzes how to apply it to translation teaching, as well as highlights the issues that should be paid attention to in the application process, in an attempt to improve the teaching quality of translation teaching

Identifying slow employment (SE) and lazy employment (LE) will help graduates to improve the quality of employment. Based on the self-determined motivation theory, the study proposes a theoretical model of employment motivation laziness (EML), which consists of study burnout, laziness, lack of responsibility and lack of self-confidence, and is divided into two dimensions: controlled motivation (CM) and non-motivation (NM). However, the literature suggests a lack of empirical validation of EML, which seems to be a recent phenomenon of employment difficulties among Chinese graduates. The sample consisted of 1,033 students (50.1% male, 49.9% female). We proposed a developed questionnaire to the respondents. Cronbach’s alpha measurements indicated that reliabilities ranged from .877 to .929. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the construct model included the dimensions of CM and NM. However, because of the complexity of motivation, other more variables may also be included, which requires further exploration

On the Interpreter’s Multiple Roles and Subjectivity: A Case Study of Bao Peng

    Get PDF
During the First Sino-British Opium War, Chinese interpreters were in great shortage, primarily owing to the Qing government’s indifference to training qualified interpreting talents. Those in temporary employment had complex identities and played a variety of roles besides interpreting. A case in point is Bao Peng. He is one of the most noticeable interpreters in China at the time. He played five roles that helped to enhance his subjectivity in interpreting, namely a comprador, a messenger, a mediator, a negotiator and an adaptor. In this paper I make a probe into the five roles of Bao Peng and how they interact with one another and collectively enhance his subjectivity as an interpreter. My conclusion is that under unusual circumstances like that of the First Opium War, an interpreter with multiple roles tends to have influence and the ability to manipulate the dialogues and negotiations he is interpreting for and thus give play to his subjectivity

Culture is a peculiar pattern of a people’s behaviour, which includes their socio-economic life. Thus, government takes it as a responsibility to formulate and implement a policy known as Cultural Policy to guide and provide directions in the sector in order to harness its inherent potentials. Like other nations of the world, Nigeria has a very rich cultural policy which its implementation has been faced with certain challenges and prospects over the years. Consequently, this study appraises the 1988 Policy for culture and economic diversification. In other words, the objectives of the study are to assess the extent of implementation of the 1998 National Policy for Culture, identify the potentials and the bottlenecks for its full economic optimization as well as advocate measures for strict compliance/implementation for maximum productivity. The study adopted descriptive and prescriptive research design with the use of questionnaire instrument for data collection, and statistic tables for data analysis. The modern portfolio theory propounded by Harry Markowitz in 1950 was employed, as well as relevant literatures: books, paper presentations, cultural policies (in force and draft), journals, internet sources were used to substantiate the study as secondary sources. The findings reveal that 1988 National Policy for culture is an invaluable document with respect to economic diversification in Nigeria; and that, cultural industries contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economy; that the cultural sector has potential to become the mainstay of the nation’s economy, if given adequate attention. The study recommended that Cultural Policy for Nigeria 1988 should be reviewed to accommodate current trends in the global cultural industries. Indeed, cultural policy provides a platform for harnessing enormous potentials offered by culture for economic vibrancy. The study concluded that if Nigeria’s economy must be viable enough to fund our national budget as opposed to the current habit of financing it through external borrowing, the cultural industries must be given adequate attention by the government in this trajectory.

Nigerian Historical Plays, Film Making and National Rebirth

    Get PDF
Apparently, the Nigeria has a very rich history. The people’s history can be traced to the nation’s pre-colonial epoch which was blessed with rich culture, norms, strong sense of belongings and viable traditional leadership institutions, the colonial period which was a direct attack on the people’s indegenious system of life, and post-colonial era which has been characterized by social ills such as tribalism, nepotism, bad leadership, corruption among others. As a result of the aforementioned Nigerian cultural, socio-economic and political background, the country is currently facing different challenges raising from unemployment, economic hardship, kidnapping, armed robbery, terrorism and cyber crime. However, history, when it is told through the right channel, has a great potential to regenerate the society for sustainable development. A number of Nigerian playwrights like Wole Soyinka, Ahmed Yerima, Emmy Idegu, Armstrong Adachaba, John Iwuh among other Nigerian creative artists have made great efforts in documenting the nation’s history through play texts. Obviously, film as a means of communication has certain advantages over some of the other channels of communication. Hence, this paper intends to investigate the needs for Nigerian film makers to use Nigerian historical plays as source materials for film making for national rejuvenation and progress. To this end, the work adopts content analysis of the qualitative methodology to interrogate the aforementioned issues using some selected Nigerian play texts. Among other things, the work concludes that adaptation of Nigerian historical plays into movies can regenerate the nation’s lost glory and promote national development
