A Study on the Application Methods of College English Listening and Speaking Textbooks Based on the Production-Oriented Approach
The introduction of“Production-Oriented Approach”(POA) has charted a new direction for the reform of college English teaching. Under the guidance of this theory, it is necessary to explore the innovative methods to use the textbooks in college English listening and speaking courses. When using the series of textbooks iEnglish: Viewing, Listening and Speaking that are compiled based on POA, teachers first set clear output goals. Grounded in “Output-Driven Hypothesis”, “Input-Enabled Hypothesis”, and “Selective Learning Hypothesis”, they follow the teaching process of “Motivating—Enabling—Assessing” to strategically select, adapt, modify, and supplement the content of the textbooks. This approach effectively avoids the pitfalls of over-reliance on textbooks, improves the quality of students’ linguistic output, and ultimately realizes the educational philosophies of “Learner-Centered Principle”, “Learning-Using Integrated Principle”, and “Whole-Person Education Principle”.
Animal Kinship in Jane Smiley’s Fiction
In Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Smiley’s fiction, there is often a depiction of animal kinship focusing on the emotional bonds between nonhumans, especially the mother-child relationship. Her portrayal of animal community challenges traditional Cartesian and anthropocentric views, emphasizing that animals have deep emotional connections, love, and grief. Through an exploration of animal kinship in Smiley’s fiction Good Will, Horse Heaven, and The Georges and the Jewels, this paper investigates the profound implications of maternal love, attachment, and sacrifice in horses. As to Good Will, the tragic bond between Sparkle and her mother reveals the emotional depth of equines, as the mare experiences immense sufferings over her foal’s accidental death. In Horse Heaven, the mare-foal relationships, including the typical example of Donut and her newborn filly, exhibit their various interactive ways and underscore the importance of maternal care in animals’ growth. As for The Georges and the Jewels, the portrayal of Pearl and her foal Jack praises a mother’s ultimate self-sacrifice, highlighting the universal nature of maternal love across species. Based on animal ethics supported by scholars like Val Plumwood, Cynthia Willett, and Marc Bekoff, the study digs out from Smiley’s works an ethical understanding of animals’ emotional world from animal kinship, calling for recognition of their subjectivity. Through her writings, Smiley unfolds the richness of animal lives, warning people against anthropocentric biases and urging them to recognize the emotional and relational complexity of nonhumans
The Figurative Expressions Employed in the Gəʿəz Acts of St Mark the Evangelist: The Medium Recension in Focus
Saint Mark the Evangelist, whose vita is supposed to be composed in Greek and translated into Gəʿəz in the 4th century, is one of the most venerated foreign Saints in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. This article explores the figurative expressions employed in the Gəʿəz version of the Acts of St. Mark the Evangelist, one of the first hagiographic texts within the Ethiopian Orthodox Church tradition. The figurative expressions employed in the manuscripts (Mss), which narrate the combat and martyrdom of St Mark the Evangelist, are analyzed well. Through a close literary and philological analysis, the study identifies and categorizes various figurative devices such as metaphors, similes, allegories, hyperbole and personification that enrich the narrative and literary depth of the text. The hagiographic text (Gädlä Marəqos) is currently preserved in seven Mss, which are said to be the product of 19th and 20th centuries. The main sources of the data are theses witnesses located in different Churches, Monasteries and libraries. When analyzing these figurative expressions, a special attention is given to how these devices use in the composition of the Vita of St. Mark, considering the spiritual authority, the portrayal of his miracles, and the expression of divine-human interaction. By situating the text within its broader linguistic and cultural context, the study contributes to the growing field of Ge’ez literary criticism and deepens our understanding of the early Ethiopian Christian tradition
Corpus-driven Research on Foreign French Teaching
As an important methodology in modern language teaching, the corpus-based approach offers a core advantage: it provides large-scale language samples embedded in authentic contexts for language learning. This study systematically explores the framework of corpus linguistics from two dimensions: theoretical construction and teaching practice. First, it outlines the fundamental theoretical framework of corpus linguistics and its historical development. Then, adopting an empirical research approach, the study takes the French polysemous word “éolien” as the focus of its research. Through detailed corpus analysis, it reveals the systematic characteristics of the word’s semantic network and its applicability in teaching. At the teaching practice level, the study designs a three-stage inquiry-based learning model of “observation-categorization-induction.” This research provides a practical theoretical framework and paradigm for corpus-driven foreign language teaching
Impoliteness and Negotiation of Meaning in Ola Rotimi’s Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again
This paper analyses impolite expressions in Ola Rotimi’s Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again. The study applies a combined framework of Culpeper’s impoliteness strategies (1996, 2005 and 2011) and Spencer-Oatey’s Rapport Management Strategies (2008). The study reveals that the prominent patterns of impolite (abusive) expressions deployed in Ola Rotimi’s drama text involve interlocutors’ utterances capable of demeaning the self-esteem of others in the society of the text. Positive impoliteness strategy (using derogatory nominations) prevails followed by Negative impoliteness strategy. The impolite exchanges define the personality of the characters, lead to loss of political ticket that should have guaranteed electoral victory, and devalue relationships. When extremely applied, these strategies drive home, intensify and inform the absurdities in the life style of the retired soldier in the literary text. These birth inequality, polygamy, betrayal/deceit as inherent themes in the text and in a way, dismantle the retired soldier’s family and political base.As a symbolic representation of the many alliances some African countries enter into, using impoliteness drives home and intensifies the absurdities of the various relationships and their destructive effects overriding the positive ones they were supposed to serve. The paper concludes that impoliteness is strategic-pragmatic device that informs the motif of the drama text
Entrants’ Age and Academic Competence of Undergraduates in Universities in Osun State
This study examines the influence of university entrants’ age on the academic competence of undergraduates in universities located in Osun State, Nigeria. Motivated by growing concerns about the preparedness and performance of students entering higher education at varying ages, the research seeks to determine whether age at entry serves as a significant predictor of academic success. Using a survey research design, data were collected from undergraduates in the selected universities in Osun State through academic records and structured questionnaires. The investigation into the intricate relationship between admission policy, specifically regarding age, and academic competence among university undergraduates has provided valuable insights into the complexities of the educational landscape in universities across Osun State. This conclusion synthesizes the key findings, highlights the issue of noncompliance with the admission age policy by university management, and explores the nuanced relationship between admission age and academic competence reflecting on the significant influence of admission age on the academic competence of university undergraduates in the state. The findings also reveal statistically significant differences in academic competence associated with age brackets, with older entrants demonstrating higher levels of academic maturity and self-regulation, while younger entrants showed greater adaptability and learning agility. The study recommends that university admission policies and student support programs consider age-related academic needs to enhance learning outcomes. These findings have implications for educational planning and student development strategies in the region. Given these insights, it is recommended that university management adhere to the stipulated minimum admission age. This guideline ensures that students admitted into higher institutions have attained sufficient development across cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains, thereby better equipping them for the academic demands of tertiary education

The First Criminal Juries in Medieval England
The documented beginnings of the jury’s history can be found in the second half of the 12th-century England, while its prehistory can be traced back to earlier and, according to most researchers, to the European Continent. In this study, the author presents the legal sources and reasons for its development in England, with special attention to the appearance of the first form of this legal institution, the grand jury, in the heroic age of the creation of the English common law, through laws issued by King Henry II. All this gives an insight into the criminal social conditions of the time, the period of transformation of private criminal law to public criminal law and the cooperation of royal justices and local juries in legal trials

Tanslation Variation and Dissemination of Chinese Folk Culture in Lin Yutang’s English Version of Six Chapters of a Floating Life
Lin Yutang (1895-1976) is a great Chinese writer, translator and philosopher of New Taoism. He had studied and worked in foreign countries such as the United States, France and Germany, and got a doctorial degree in linguistics with his deep cross-understanding of Chinese and Western languages and cultures. His English version of the Chinese classic Six Chapters of a Floating Life which was written by Shen Fu in Qing Dynasty has got the highest number of reprints so far, indicating the charm and value of his translation and dissemination. Based on translation variation and dissemination proposed by Chinese scholar Huang Zhonglian, this paper makes a thorough case analysis of Chinese folk culture in Lin’s English version from lexical, syntactic and cultural ritual levels. At lexical level, many words are unique to China, and it is difficult to find complete equivalents in English, so amplification, deletion and adaptation are mainly adopted. At syntactic level, Chinese and English have significant differences in sentence structure and information arrangement, especially in Old Chinese, so amplification and edition are mainly employed. At cultural ritual level, many festivals and customs have unique and profound ritual activities. Amplification and adaptation are mainly used to reduce comprehension barriers and burdens. It’s hoped that this study can provide a new perspective for English translation and dissemination of Chinese culture of the similar text both in translation theory and practice
