Yu Hua’s non-fiction, China in Ten Words, was translated into English by American sinologist Allan Hepburn Barr and released by Random House in 2011. The translation stirred considerable discussion among English-speaking audiences. Utilizing a parallel Chinese-English corpus, this study employs a narrative stylistics framework to conduct a comparative analysis of the original and translated texts, examining narrative variations and their effects. The research highlights significant alterations in narrative time, frequency, perspective, and distance in the translation. Most changes—particularly in time, frequency, and perspective—tended to diminish the narrative’s impact, thereby detracting from the literary quality of the work. However, adjustments in narrative distance positively affected the narrative, subtly enhancing the translated text compared to the original

Numerous scholars assert that Mo Yan’s Nobel Prize in Literature is a testament to the exceptional artistic quality of his works, as well as the pivotal role of translation in their dissemination. Despite the extensive attention and analysis that the Republic of Wine has garnered within the literary domain, there is a notable dearth of research dedicated specifically to its English translation. This paper, therefore, employs the theoretical framework of postcolonial translation theory to examine the English rendition of the Republic of Wine, with a particular focus on the translation strategies employed for culture-specific terminology. The investigation reveals that the adoption of postcolonial translation theory not only enhances the target language audience’s understanding of Chinese cultural nuances but also fosters the exchange and integration of diverse cultural perspectives. Consequently, this approach contributes to the broader international recognition and appreciation of Chinese literature

Mentorship in Translation Education for the Electric Power Field: Bridging the Gap Between Individual Skills and Project Management

The evaluation and assessment of student interpreters have long been an issue for interpreting programs. The balance between student practice throughput, the time and human cost of assessment, and the quality of feedback is notoriously difficult to achieve. Here we demonstrate a way to rapidly assess student Chinese-to-English interpreting performance using automatic speech recognition and grammar correction software. The assessment results are compared with human graders against a set of criteria for grammar, fidelity, register, and enunciation. The results show that the semiautomatic assessment process is less time-consuming, and can give adequate feedback for enunciation, grammar, and register. Student volunteers were able to maintain engagement over three months with minimal intervention from the instructor, however, interest began to drop over the long term
