Methodology qua Methodology: Decoding Catford’s Translation Shifts in Xu Yuanchong’s Renditions of Shijing (The Book of Songs)

This study pursues dual objectives: addressing critical gaps in both the application of Catford’s translation shifts and the methodological scope of Shijing translation research. Proposed in the last century, Catford’s taxonomy of translation shifts has been predominantly applied to Indo-European language pairs, focusing on linguistic transference between ST and TT. Its potential in Chinese-English translation practice remains underdeveloped. While Xu Yuanchong’s Shijing renditions have attracted substantial scholarly attention in recent decades, the prevailing analytical paradigm—over-reliant on the translator’s own ‘Three Beauties’ Theory—has inadvertently constrained methodological diversity in Shijing rendition studies. This paper explores the extent to which translation shifts are applied in C-E translation and inject fresh theoretical perspectives into domestic scholarship around Shijng renditions. The findings indicate that though translation shifts do explain phenomena and process in translating Shijing, yet prove inadequate in explicating translator’s intentions, concerning aesthetic design and cultural adaptation, which underscores the necessity of respecting theoretical boundaries: by allowing the methodology-focused framework to operate within its epistemological field, while establishing interdisciplinary connections with intention-oriented theories.

Endangered Communities: Managing Human Rights Exigencies in Climate Change Impacted Regions: A Case Study of People of the Sahel, Nigeria

Climate change poses a severe threat to human rights in Nigeria’s Sahel region. Droughts, floods, and erratic weather patterns disrupt livelihoods; reduce food security, and cause displacement, disproportionately impacting women, children, and people with disabilities. Against this backdrop, this study investigates how climate change exacerbates existing vulnerabilities of the Sahel region and explores opportunities for strengthening community resilience. In the method section, analytical literature review was utilized to extract qualitative data from extant literature. Anchored on Political economic theory, the appraisal reveals that climate shocks worsen pre-existing inequalities exacerbating community vulnerabilities. Girls with limited education due to societal barriers face even greater challenges when climate disrupts schooling, hindering future opportunities. People with disabilities encounter difficulties accessing essential services due to climate-induced disruptions, further marginalizing them. The study identifies key opportunities to empower Sahelian communities. Raising awareness about climate risks and adaptation strategies in local languages is crucial. Supporting climate-smart agriculture and livelihood diversification can improve food security and economic resilience. Investing in infrastructure that withstands extreme weather events with accessibility for people with disabilities is essential. Social safety nets, fostering local participation in decision-making, and strengthening local governance can further bolster community resilience. It is recommended that legislative representatives of these communities or their nearest constituencies device a legal framework for pursuing the maintenance of the rights of those living in those communities.

Support Systems for Parents of People With Autism Spectrum Disorder and Their Relationship to Their Academic Qualifications

This study aimed to assess the level of support systems available to parents of people with autism spectrum disorder and their relationship to academic qualifications. The participants were 120 parents from Amman, Jordan, distributed across three educational levels: high school or lower, bachelor’s degree, and postgraduate studies. A support systems scale for parents of people with autism spectrum disorder (SSSFPASD) was developed, and its validity and reliability were verified. To answer the study questions, the descriptive survey method was employed, and arithmetic means, standard deviations, one-way ANOVA, and Scheffé’s post-hoc test were used to analyze the data and obtain the results. The findings indicated that the availability, accessibility, and utilization of support systems were moderate, with institutional professional support being relatively higher than the other areas. The results also showed that people with higher educational qualifications were more aware of and better able to access and utilize support systems compared to those with a high school diploma or lower. The study recommends increasing awareness among people with lower educational levels about support systems, how to access them, and how to benefit from them, as well as enhancing community awareness and addressing the needs of parents of people with autism spectrum disorder

Antecedents and Determiner Phrases in Zarma

Information about the nature and the forms of pronouns, anaphors and referential expressions of Zarma, a Nilo-Saharan language of the Songhai group, abounds in the descriptive literature, but there has not been any known thorough and comprehensive analysis of these items, especially within the modern approach to Binding Theory. And perhaps, on the assumption that a fundamental restriction exists on the way languages express their rules of construal. I therefore examine pronouns, anaphors and referential expressions and show that the language distinguishes between reflexives and reciprocals at least morphologically, whereas they share obvious syntactic and semantic properties. I point out that pronouns, particularly the long forms of the third person, nga and ngey, have pronominal as well as anaphoric properties; they sometimes make evident antilocality effects of the Condition B type i.e. they do have local antecedents. I adopt the movement approach to harmonise the opposite demands of binding conditions on pronouns, anaphors and referential expressions. I make use of the same approach to discuss the interrelationship between control and binding and explicate the relevance of precedence and c-command to the formulation of binding vis-à-vis Zarma data. This study gives an interesting account of the grammatical properties and the interpretation of nominal and pronominal expressions (determiner phrases) from Zarma; an aspect of the language that has hitherto not received any systematic linguistic attention

Optimization Path for AIGC-Empowered Cultivation of Multilingual Translation Talents Based on Language Service Market Demand Under the “Belt and Road” Initiative

The continued advancement of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has led to a significant increase in demand for high-quality multilingual language services. Existing models for training translation professionals often fall short in addressing the complexity and diversity of these demands, particularly in terms of the systematic integration and application of AIGC (Artificial Intelligence Generated Content) technology. Grounded in Competency-Based Education (CBE), Functionalist Translation Theory, and the Sociology of Technology, this paper constructs an integrated analytical framework to systematically examine the core needs of the BRI language service market, objectively assess the potential and limitations of AIGC, and propose a set of concrete optimization strategies. Central to these strategies is the design of a curriculum system tailored to multilingual and multi-domain challenges. Through an in-depth case study of a university-enterprise collaboration project, the paper further validates the effectiveness of the proposed path in enhancing students’ technological application skills and cross-cultural practical abilities. The study concludes that a synergistic approach, which deeply integrates AIGC as an enabling tool within a pedagogically sound framework, is essential for cultivating future-ready translation talents who can navigate the intricate demands of the BRI language service landscape

The Sociolinguistic Analysis of Amharic Euphemisms of Magician

Taboos are proscription of behaviors that people in various cultures forbid to express in public. On the other hand, euphemisms are pleasant cultural linguistic strategies which societies use for displacing offensive expressions. Euphemisms are conventional figures of speech that people in different cultures use to mitigate fear, shame, disgust, disagreements and avoid quarrelsome. However, it violates the cooperative principles. But as the goal of euphemism is to show politeness and to save face, it achieves the politeness principles. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to examine the sociolinguistic analysis of Amharic euphemisms of magicians within the frameworks of politeness and relevance theories. Descriptive qualitative method was used to conduct the study. To achieve those objectives, data were collected from native speakers of Amharic by using semi-structured interview, focus group discussions and introspection. Informants were selected by using snowball and purposive sampling techniques. Results show that native speakers of Amharic in the study areas, in the churches, the mosques, the homes, the schools and the hospitals domains considered that using magic in public is taboo. Instead, they use different euphemistic expressions. In addition, people in the study areas used various euphemistic construction strategies such as metaphor, idiom, borrowing, circumlocution, overstatement and understatement. The findings also indicate that research participants used various mechanisms for the formation of euphemisms to avoid taboo expressions, to minimize conflicts, to build social relationships, to save face as well as to show respect
