The effect of Dentofresh® on yeast-like fungi
Introduction. The mouthwash Dentofresh® produced by Phytopharm Kleka SA, intended for adults and children over the age of 6, is a prophylactic preparation. Using the mouthwash after having brushed the teeth has a preventive and healing influence on the hard tissues of teeth and gingiva. The mouthwash contains: eucalyptus, mint, thyme and sage oils, which show anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity. Aim. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Dentofresh® against strains of yeast-like fungi from the genus Candida. Material and methods. The study was conducted on 15 strains of yeast-like fungi from the genus Candida isolated from infections, and five reference strains. The fungicidal activity of the preparation (MFC – Minimal Fungicidal Concentration) against the strains of yeast-like fungi at the concentration recommended by its producer was evaluated. Results. Dentofresh® exhibited great fungicidal activity at the concentration recommended by the producer as quickly as 15 minutes after it was applied (against 87% of the strains), while after 30 minutes, all the tested strains of yeast-like fungi were destroyed. Conclusions. The preparation was effective against the genera of yeast-like fungi which are usually resistant to common antifungal medicines
Multiple periosteal osteomas
Introduction. Osteoma is a tumor composed of osseous tissue, but one whose structure is different from the surrounding normal tissue. Endosteal osteomas are situated deeply in the bone and develop from the bone marrow, while periosteal osteomas develop under the periosteum and on the surface of the bone. They occur mainly in adults as single or multiple lesions and grow slowly for many years, deforming the bone. The histological structure includes parts of bone tissues which produce the tumor. Aim. The aim of the study was to perform a retrospective analysis of patients with periosteal osteomas who underwent outpatient treatment. Material and methods. A 15-year clinical observation included 13 patients (5 females and 8 males) treated for multiple periosteal osteomas in the Department of Dental Surgery, Medical University of Lodz. Results. Multiple tumors were situated in the maxilla, on the alveolar process, in 9 patients, and in the internal surface of the body of the mandible in 4 cases. The consistency of the osteomas was compact; they were well separated from the surrounding tissues and connected with the bone. Only 2 of all the treated patients complained of painful symptoms characterized as neuralgic pain. Four periosteal osteomas, 1–1.5 cm in diameter, were observed in 6 patients in the studied material. Three osteomas were found in 5 patients. Two osteomas, which caused painful, neuralgic symptoms were removed in 2 patients
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome – the basics of diagnosis and treatment
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is one of the most common respiratory disorders in humans. It is characterized by repetitive episodes of pharyngeal collapse with increased airflow resistance during sleep and is often accompanied by extensive snoring. Hypoxia and sleep fragmentation, which accompany the disease, cause a number of serious consequences such as excessive daytime sleepiness, arterial hypertension and pulmonary hypertension, arrhythmia and ischemic heart disease. The gold standard diagnostic investigation for OSAS is polysomnography. Oral appliances have occupied an important place among all conservative methods of therapy. They should be considered in patients with mild-to-moderate OSAS or in those unable to tolerate continuous positive airways pressure, CPAP
Chronic Ulcerative Stomatitis. A Case Report
The paper describes the case of a rare autoimmune disease. Chronic ulcerative stomatitis, also called in English CUS (chronic ulcerative stomatitis) was isolated for the first time by Jaremko in 1990. It is characterized by a chronic progression with periods of remission and relapse. This disease occurs in 90% of cases among mature women in the fifth or sixth decade of life. It is characterized by ulcerations and erosions of the mucous membrane of the mouth, most frequently of the tongue and cheek. The patient's general condition is good. The lesions cause pain that hinders speech, food intake, and the use of dentures. In order to perform a diagnosis, clinical and immunopathological examinations are required. In direct immunofluorescence (DIF) of lesion samples, and in indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) of the patients' serum, antinuclear antibodies of IgG called SES-ANA are detected. The treatment of choice for chronic ulcerative stomatitis are antimalarials or antimalarial drugs associated with corticosteroids
Compobond – composite or bond? Proprietary clinical observation of Vertise Flow material
Introduction. The development of modern dentistry and the introduction of new technologies have led to the creation of Vertise Flow, a self-adhering, light-curable, semi-liquid composite belonging to a new class of materials – "compobonds". Aim. The paper aims at an evaluation of functional characteristics as well as a clinical assessment of restorations made with the self-adhering, light-curable Vertise Flow composite immediately after placement. Material and methods. Sixty-seven restorations made of Vertise Flow (KerrHawe) were placed in 42 subjects of both sexes aged 16–70 years. The restorations were evaluated for functional characteristics such as ease-of-placement into the cavity, adaptation to the cavity walls, polishing properties and aesthetics, as well as the time to work with the material. Clinical evaluations of restorations immediately after placement were made using the four-category Ryge’s scale taking into account: surface structure, anatomic form and marginal adaptation. In addition, the patient's subjective feelings about the smoothness of the surface, aesthetics and the presence of any postoperative sensitivity to temperature changes were taken into account. Results. A very good rating of 100% was obtained in terms of aesthetics and polishing properties as well as working time with the material. In assessing the restorations using Ryge’s scale, it was found that immediately after placement, all of them were rated very well in the analyzed categories. Based on the subjective assessment of patients, it was found that the vast majority of restorations met the expectations in terms of aesthetics and smoothness – more than 95% receiving very good ratings. Conclusions. Working with the self-adhering, semi-liquid Vertise Flow composite produces a satisfactory aesthetic effect in the perception of the physician and the patient. The fast placement technique of the material significantly reduces the operating time. Preliminary clinical evaluations of the material are positive
Clinical and diagnostic implications of the location of the mental foramen and the course of the mental neurovascular bundle
Identification of the mental foramen and the mental neurovascular bundle is a matter of great importance in diagnostics preceeding dental implant treatment. The objective of the research is the analysis of the methods of mental foramen localization. Its results indicate variations and anomalies in its location as well as in the mental nerve course. Cone-Beam Computer Tomography seems to be the most reliable method, however false positive and false negative results are observed in some cases
Overview of occlusal splints used in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders – a literature review
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders concern 12–90% of the human population and the number of patients is constantly rising [1]. The most common symptoms indicating disorders in TMJ functions are mandible movement disturbances, acoustic symptoms and pain. The last one – the most unpleasant – is the most common reason for patients' visits to dental surgeries. Splint therapy is an effective method for these abnormalities. Nowadays, there is a great variety of occlusal splints; however, the therapeutic values of some of them are often underestimated. The correct diagnosis of temporomandibular dysfunction enables the selection of appropriate occlusal splints for every patient. The aim of this article is to harmonize classification and present short descriptions of the most commonly used occlusal splints
Dental implant system design and it’s potential impact on the establishing and sustainability of aesthetics
There is a growing appreciation of the importance of establishing and sustaining the aesthetics of implant restorations. Four of the most important factors for achieving this goal are: implant primary stability, implant surface, implantabutmentjunction geometry, and implant-abutment connection. This article reviews each of these factors as they relate to the design of the BIOMET 3i T3â„c Tapered Implant System and discusses the potential impact these factors can have on long-term aesthetics
Efficacy of povidone-iodine (PVP-I) in treatment of early childhood caries – a systematic literature review
Caries management in paediatric patients has consisted so far mainly of treating consequences of caries instead of its main reason – the cariogenic bacteria. Literature reports on the benefits of using antibacterial agents such as povidone-iodine are increasing. It is specifically recommended in young patients and mentally disabled people treated under general anaesthesia. The aim is to present methods of using povidone-iodine in caries prevention and treatment in children, as well as its clinical and antibacterial efficacy. A literature review was performed on the use of povidone-iodine in treatment of primary dentition caries, basing on the available data bases – PubMed/MEDLINE and EMBASE. The mode of action, methods of use and the effect on cariogenic bacteria count and increase in caries of povidone-iodine were described. In most subjects, increase in caries was assessed. In all reviewed cases, reduction of caries increase in study groups vs. control groups was observed. Povidone-iodine is recommended specifically in high caries risk children because of its rapid and long-lasting antibacterial effect
