Prevalence of Helicobacter pylori in the oral cavity – a literature review

    Get PDF
Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative spiral bacterium found in the stomach. The bacterium colonizes the lining of the stomach and duodenum causing chronic inflammation, plus peptic ulcer disease as well as contributing to the development of stomach cancer. Chronic infection with H. pylori is found in approximately 50 per cent of the global population. H. pylori was first isolated about 30 years ago. However, the mechanisms of infection, reinfection, and its transmission routes are still not fully understood. Ambiguous results have also been obtained in studies on the presence of these bacteria in the oral cavity in patients with gastric H. pylori infections. Moreover, there is conflicting information on whether or not the oral cavity may be a significant reservoir of H. pylori. Studies on the prevalence of the bacteria in patients with various oral cavity diseases have also been conducted. No clear views have been articulated in this case, either. The objective of this paper is to present current literature reports concerning the presence of H. pylori in the oral cavity

Evaluation of temporomandibular joints after orthognathic surgery – the anamnestic and clinical index according to Helkimo

    Get PDF
Introduction. Skeletal disorders require orthodontic preparation as part of the process of combined surgical and orthodontic treatment planning. The displacement of condylar head to glenoid fossa or to the articulating disc as well as changes in the muscular function can occur as a result of the treatment of morphological disorders. Such displacements and rotations of the condylar long axis can lead to temporomandibular dysfunction. Aim. The purpose of the study was to assess the influence of orthognathic surgery on the temporomandibular function on the basis of the anamnestic and clinical dysfunction index according to Helkimo performed before and after surgical treatment of mandibular prognathism. Material and methods. The material included 20 patients with diagnosed skeletal class III malocclusion. The following examinations were conducted in all patients prior to and 3–6 months after the orthognathic surgery: a subjective examination – anamnesis including the anamnestic index according to Helkimo (Ai); and an objective examination – examination chart and clinical dysfunction index according to Helkimo (Di). Results. The number of individuals without subjective masticatory dysfunction symptoms (anamnestic index according to Helkimo) significantly increased to 14 after the surgery. However, the evaluation of moderate and severe subjective symptoms in the studied group showed no statistically significant changes before and after the operation. Mild symptoms (Di-I) of the clinical dysfunction index according to Helkimo were the most frequent in patients before and after surgical treatment. The number of patients with moderate symptoms (Di-II) decreased after the operation. Conclusions. The clinical dysfunction index according to Helkimo cannot be assessed on the basis of the anamnestic index

Methods of assessing periodontal tissues healing after periodontal therapy

    Get PDF
The start of periodontal wound healing is the aim of periodontal therapy. There are two ways of periodontal healing: regeneration and reparation. Regeneration is defined as the reconstruction of the lost or injured tissues in such a way that their morphology and function are completely restored. In the regeneration of periodontal tissue structural restoration occurs of the gingiva, connective tissue attachment, epithelium junction, root cementum and alveolar bone. Such processes can begin after advanced surgical regenerative periodontal therapy. Nonsurgical treatment leads only to reparation of the tissue without restoration of tooth attachment with the formation of a long junctional epithelium. The easiest and most achievable method for every clinician is to evaluate signs of periodontal inflammation during a periodontal examination. This study aims to present the methods of clinical, radiographic, histological and cytological examination in the assessment of periodontal tissue healing after periodontal therapy. To ensure an effective therapy it is necessary for the clinician to have a good understanding of healing processes after different methods of treatment

Crouzon syndrome – a case report

    Get PDF
Crouzon syndrome is a genetic disorder, autosomal dominant, characterized by the premature fusion of certain skull bones, which affects the shape of the head and face. It is caused by mutations in the FGFR2 gene, which in turn provides instructions for producing fibroblast growth factor receptor 2. The article presents a case of Crouzon’s syndrome in a female patient aged 40

Treatment of single tooth scissors-bite. Presentation of two cases with a 2.5 year post treatment observation period

    Get PDF
This study reports the treatment of two patients with single tooth scissors bite. The first patient had a scissors bite which affected the two first premolars. The second patient had buccal crossbite in the second left molar. The cause of this malocclusion was the buccal tipping of the upper teeth. Modification of the palatal arch was used in the treatment therapy. This modification allowed for the palatal movement and intrusion of the affected teeth. Changes in certain dental arch parameters were observed during both the active and post treatment period. Premolars were correctly positioned within 1.5 months and 2 months. The molar was well positioned within 2.5 months. Correct intercuspidation of the opposing teeth was the only form of retention. During the 2.5 years of the observation period there was no recurrence of the malocclusion

The state of dentition in 6-year-old children from the Zachodniopomorskie region

    Get PDF
Introduction. Dental caries in deciduous teeth is a big problem in pedodontics because of its considerable frequency and the very low age of patients. The health status of children’s oral cavity is related to a number of different factors and it is also connected with prophylaxis and pro-health education. Aim of the study. The aim of this study was to evaluate the health status of dentition in 6-year-old children from the city of Szczecin and the Zachodniopomorskie province. Material and methods. 60 children of both sexes were examined from the city of Szczecin, 30 children from a town in the above province and 30 from a village. Results. The results showed a very high prevalence of caries and high values for the DMF/dmf indices in children from the town and village. The children coming from the town and village need more encouragement in pro-health habits and better access to dental care than children of the same age from the city. Conclusion. The results show a decidedly worse status of dentition in children from the small town and the village than in their peers from the city. Thus it is necessary to implement preventive and treatment measures as well as improving oral health awareness among the parents and guardians, particularly in small towns and country areas

The use of alginate impression material for the controlled release of sodium fusidate

    Get PDF
Introduction. Alginate impression material has the potential to act as a controlled release material, either for transmucosal drug delivery, or for use as a self-disinfecting impression material in clinical dentistry. Aim of the study. To study whether sodium fusidate could be released from alginate impression material and, if so, to determine the release kinetics. Material and methods. Sodium fusidate was incorporated into alginate impression material at the mixing stage (2% by mass). The mixed material was pressed into a sheet and, once cured, discs (6 mm diameter x 2 mm thick) were cut out, and stored in water, one disc in a 5 ml volume. Small samples (20 Î1l) were withdrawn at time intervals of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 24 h, 1, 2 and 3 weeks and analysed by HPLC. Results. Sodium fusidate was released from the impression material in a process that was shown to be diffusion based for the first 5 hours or so. The diffusion coefficient was 2.25 x 10–5 cm2 s-1, and the release corresponded to 36.0 ± 1.0% of the total loading. The system thus shows promise for clinical application

    Get PDF
Bruxism is thought to be the most often occured parafunctions what means harmful motor reactions of mandible. This dysfunction relies on gnashing and clenching teeth with much force. Many patients don’t realize of presence of this affection because of doing it subconsciously. Non-treated, fixed bruxism becomes the cause of serious disturbances in stomatognathic system. The aim of this article is to present regularity physiotherapeutic methods application in bruxism treatment. In this cause the most important names connected with bruxism for example myofascial pain syndrome or trigger points in muscles of stomatognatic system were described. In next part of this article variety of manual therapy methods were analized due to author’s experiences. In last few decades there was achieved a development of knowledge about bruxism and its followed disorders. Data from the literature indicate that there is a possibility of effective, physiotherapeutic treatment of mentioned active disturbances

Aim of the study. This study aimed at comparing the oral cavity condition and Candida prevalence in generally healthy Polish and foreign dentistry students and evaluating the relationship between Candida occurrence and the oral cavity condition. Material and methods. 79 dentistry students with no systemic diseases, aged 20–25 (mean 23.5), were examined in the present study. Two groups of examined subjects were specified: 43 Polish students (group I) and 36 foreign students (group II). Group II has been divided into subgroups: IIa – students from Taiwan and IIb – students from Europe and USA. Occurence of oral mucosa lesions, periodontal treatment needs (CPITN), caries prevalence (DMFT) and oral hygiene (OHIs) were investigated. Evaluation of Candida occurrence on the oral mucosa was included in the study. Results. Comparison of the oral cavity condition in Polish and foreign students showed no significant difference, with the exception of the number of teeth with active caries, that was significantly higher in foreign students (D 1,2) than in Polish students (D 0.4). Mean indices rates in the group I were: CPITN 0.9; PUWz 8.7; OHI-s 0.4 in the group II 1.0; 7.0; 0,5, respectively. The most commonly observed oral mucosa lesions, in both groups, were white coated tongue and buccal white line. Candida was found in 38,0% of the subjects, its prevalence was similar in both groups (I – 34.9%, II – 41.7%). No correlation between Candida occurence and oral cavity state was detected. Higher frequency of active caries in Candida carriers was the exception
