    In vitro analysis of the proliferation potential and colony forming efficiency of stem cells isolated from dental pulp (DPSC) and apical papilla (SCAP), cultured in standard and pro-mineralizing conditions

    Introduction. Recent data point to unerupted third molars as a promising source of stem cells (SC). Tooth derived SC are clonogenic and present a capacity for self-renewal and colony formation. Additionally, an environmental stimulation induces an in vitro differentiation of SC into multiple lineages, including odontoblasts. Aim of the study. The aim of the study was to evaluate the in vitro potential for proliferation and colony formation by stem cells derived from both dental pulp and apical papilla cultured in both standard medium (control and primary group) and medium modified with ingredients that stimulate mineralization (experimental group). Material and methods. Right after odontectomy the dental pulp and apical papilla were digested with dispase and collagenase type I. DPSCs and SCAPs were sorted using anti STRO-1, CD146, CD34, CD45 antibodies by means of the MACS method. Thereafter, the cells from the initial and control groups were cultured in a standard medium. The medium of the experimental group was additionally modified with ingredients that stimulated mineralization. To assess the cells commitment, the rate of proliferation and colony formation were examined. Results. The analysis showed that SCAPs from all the examined groups proliferated faster and formed more numerous and larger colonies compared to DPSCs. Environmental stimulation reduced proliferation and the ability to form colonies in both the DPSCs and SCAPs lineages. Conclusion. Faster proliferation and a higher ability to form colonies indicates the lower commitment of SCAPs compared to DPSCs. Additionally, the slower proliferation of stem cells from the experimental group suggests their more advanced commitment and differentiation. Although the SCAPs and DPSCs present different degrees of maturation, both cell lineages seem to be promising sources of stem cells

    A dentist as a member of forensic medical team

    In the Polish medico-legal system, the participation of dental practitioner in forensic medical teams is incidental and limited mostly to acting as experts in particular cases. Unlike many other countries, there are no professional forensic odontologists in Poland. Therefore the dentist, usually selected from university staff or an another company cooperating with forensic medicine department or another expert and is not always experienced enough to be involved in activities of medico-legal team. Furthermore, the dentist’s engagement is often the result of non-clinical interests. Among the tasks of a dentist working as a member of forensic medical team are opinions in civil and criminal cases, identification of human remains and victims of disasters by dental means, bite marks analysis, and dental age estimation. As concluded from our previous experience, the dentist is also necessary for reading and interpreting the dental records used in medico-legal practice

    This review paper describes research found in published literature on selected anatomical details of maxillary sinuses with a major focus on alveolar recess and its implications in current medical practice. It ilustrates possible complications of dental procedures, both surgical and endodontal, and focuses the reader’s attention on the latest capabilities in imaging the maxillary periodontal region and sinus. The aim of this paper was to demonstrate how differing views on the structure of the maxillary sinus emerged over the years as a result of new diagnostic and imagining modalities, which allow for more precice treatment planning. Article utilizes the PubMed database and The Polish Medical Bibliography using the following key words: maxillary sinus anatomy, septae, volume, imagining, CBCT, complications, sex, age. Out of several thousand queries a few dozen were selected basen on statistical significance research in the period from 1993–2011. The results demonstrate considerable progress of knowledge in the area of maxillary sinus anatomy as a result of new imaging modalities and underscore the importance of certain details in light of dental implant treatment developments as well as possible complications of untreated or improperly treated infected dentition

    Children as victims of domestic violence

    The article presents the physical and emotional effects of domestic violence on children, with particular emphasis on the dental context. Specific definitions of violence and violence in the family as well as possible types and forms of violence against children are given. The epidemiology of the phenomenon of abuse in Poland is presented. Based on the literature analyzed and our own observations, the characteristic damage that result from the use of violence against children is described. In addition, the article includes a description of guardian abuser attitudes to an abused child, which can be observed in a medical office. The article specifies the emotional consequences of abuse both in childhood and in the later life of victims of violence. The diagnostic criteria for psychological and psychopathological consequences of maltreatment are included. The specificity of dental work in the context of the ability to detect abuse was characterized. We have shown how injuries should be described in medical records if there is a suspicion that they arose as a result of violence. Situations in which the doctor and the dentist are required to submit a notice to a prosecutor's office on suspicion of violence against a young patient are defined

    The effect of the presence of malocclusions, orthodontic treatment and occlusion disorders on temporomandibular joints dysfunctions – a literature review

    Temporomandibular disorders represent a significant percentage of craniofacial disorders. Mainly they can be caused by abnormal occlusion, which has a important impact on the whole stomatognathic system. This is a difficult issue both in terms of diagnosis and treatment, which is an impulse to discussion of many researchers and clinicians. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the presence of malocclusions, orthodontic treatment and occlusion disorders on temporomandibular joints dysfunctions based on the literature of the past 20 years. It is not possible to determine which malocclusions have a direct impact on the temporomandibular joint disorder, because results of examinations carried out so far, are ambiguous. It is also difficult to assess the impact of the orthodontic and orthognathic treatment on the temporomandibular joints. The problem described is noteworthy due to the complex etiology of these diseases and requires an interdisciplinary approach and the cooperation of many specialists

    On the basis of the accomplished observations of 113 patients treated in the Department of Oral Surgery in Wroclaw’s Medical University in the years 2009–2011, the authors stated that the use of CO2 laser as cutting instrument is a good method due to the clinical features as well as a positive feeling of patients. Surgical laser operations in patients opinion are painless. The post procedural period is also painless. According to the patients the short time of the surgical procedure is an advantage of this method. The level of fear before treatment is not associated with the surgical treatment method but rather with extent of the procedure. Patients treated by CO2 laser declared that before another such operation they would feel less afraid

    The favourable effects of probiotics on human health have already been well documented. Their application in prophylaxis and therapy, especially of inflammatory diseases of alimentary tract (including antibiotic-associated diarrhoea) is not questioned any more. This study presents current data on the knowledge of the suitability of probiotic strains of the Lactobacillus genus for application in dentistry in adults with dental caries or chronic periodontitis. In the light of recent in vitro and in vivo studies, antagonistic effects of lactobacilli producing hydrogen peroxide toward cariopathogens and periopathogens were reviewed. The potential was analysed for using probiotic Lactobacillus strains in dentistry, pointing to their significance in prophylaxis and therapy of caries and chronic periodontitis

    The paper describes the clinical symptoms found in various types of Kelly’s combination syndrome and discusses restorative problems connected with the complexity of anatomical changes. A general classification of the symptoms according to the location of natural teeth in relation to edentulous residual ridge structures is presented. Due to the difficulty of effective prosthetic restoration of dental arches with the use of conventional methods, implant prosthetic procedures are recommended as a more beneficial solution that prevents further destruction of the masticatory system. The direct support of removable dentures provided by intraosseous implants located in the bone structures of the alveolar ridge promotes the stability and good retention of the prostheses, ensuring long-term comfort of use
