Difficulty in a complete lower denture adaptation – a case report
A case of prosthetic treatment was presented of the female patient with full upper arch fixed restorations form 16 to 26 opposing edentulous mandible. The patient experienced long-term adaptation difficulties of the complete lower denture and was not able to adjust to incorrectly designed previous dentures due to lack of their stabilization on the prosthetic field and consequent speech difficulties. The treatment consisted of the initial correction of the currently used lower denture followed by manufacturing of a new prosthesis according to Wrocław method of edentulous patient rehabilitation. Thorough examination and appropriate treatment method selection led to a positive therapeutic outcome
Laser treatment of sialolithiasis
Salivary stones are one of the common diseases of major salivary glands. Males are affected more often than female patients. It usually occurs unilaterally. Salivary stone sizes range from 3 to 7 mm, they occur as single or multiple stones of various shapes. In this condition, the recommended and favoured therapy method is the laser technique. The goal of this paper is to compare the results of salivary stone treatments performed by means of conventional surgical procedures and laser techniques
Influence of angulation of lower third molar on its ability to erupt – preliminary report
Aim. The aim of this study was to compare a degree of the third lower molar state of eruption or retention according to its angulation. There was a group of adolescent patients studied, who needed an orthodontic treatment and sought help in Orthodontic Ward of the Medical University of Gdańsk. Material and methods. Panoramic pictures of 50 patients (36 women and 14 men) were qualified to be measured for the amount of the third lower molars and their angulation, which was described as an external angle between a long axis of the tooth according to a bite line. Results. The amount of third lower molars was defined and revealed that 30 women (83%) had both lower molars, 14 men (100%) had left third lower molar while only 11 men (79%) had a right wisdom tooth. The angulation was determined for both women and men – the angle of the erupted lower third molar oscillated between 31° and 88° (on average 56° +/- 12°) whereas for the retained: from 3° to 90° (average 52° +/- 26°). An observation was made that the lower third molars were usually erupted when their angulation was in the 40° to 70° range. Conclusions. 1. Angulation of the lower third molar has an influence on its ability to erupt. 2. Too big, as well as too small angle of angulation may have a negative influence on the ability of the tooth to erupt. 3. The sex does not have an influence on the state of the tooth eruption
Titanium – its properties and application in prosthetic dentistry
This paper presents the advantageous properties of titanium and its alloys as biomaterials for use in dentistry. The article emphasises that the most important features of titanium, i.e. biocompatibility and corrosion resistance, make it the best building metal material for endosteal implants. Favourable physicochemical and mechanical properties make it possible to use titanium and its alloys in conventional prosthetics and implant prosthetics (especially for the construction of mesostructures and suprastructures). The advantages which characterize titanium prostheses have been enumerated, such as their mechanical strength, hardness, and durability. The factor which restricts the use of titanium on a large-scale in the manufacturing of dental restorations in modern prosthetics is the still complicated and expensive technology in processing it
Evaluation of bruxism intensity in patients with shortened dental arch
Aim. The aim of the study was to analyze the intensity of bruxism in patients with different amounts of dental arch reduction in relationship with prosthetic treatment needs. Material and methods. The study group included 120 individuals of both genders, aged 41–65, selected from patients admitted to The Department of Prosthodontics, Wrocław Medical University in the years 2007–2010. Patients were divided into two study groups depending on the amount of dental arch reduction and a control group including individuals with complete natural dentition. All patients underwent a routine interview and general oral cavity examination. The assessment of bruxism intensity was carried out on the basis of the Bruxism Intensity Index by Panek. The data obtained underwent statistical analysis. Results. The results of this study on parafunctions indicate a higher intensity of bruxism (B3, B4) together with a reduction in dental arch. The prevalence of bruxism was similar in both study groups and only a little higher than in the control group. Conclusions. 1) There is only a minor correlation between a reduction of dentition and the prevalence of bruxism. 2) Individuals with extremely shortened dental arches revealed a higher intensity of bruxism, thus this group of patients has the highest treatment needs and prosthetic rehabilitation in this group is inevitable
Bacterial adhesion to dental materials – a literature review
Dental plaque formation on teeth and restorative materials plays an important role in the pathogenesis of oral diseases. Newly developed dental materials have been tested for their susceptibility to adhere bacteria causing caries and periodontitis. Numerous factors have been identified to influence oral biofilm formation such as surface roughness, surface free energy and surface chemical composition. Both an increase in surface roughness above the Ra treshold above 0,2 Î1m and/or of the surface free energy facilitates biofilm formation on restorative materials. Various affinities of oral bacteria adhesion have been reported for different materials such as titanium, resin composites and dental ceramic materials. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have investigated the bacterial adhesion on ceramics in comparison to other dental materials, such as gold alloy, titanium, composite. Almost all of these investigations found lower bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation on ceramics compared to other materials. Biofilm formation on various types of dental ceramics differs significantly. Zirconia, in particular, exhibits low plaque accumulation. In addition to its high strenght, it makes zirconia a promising material for various indications (including implant abutments and telescopic crowns)
Oral appliances for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea and snoring – a literature review
According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep-related breathing disorder that involves a decrease or complete halt in the airflow of the upper airways despite an ongoing effort to breathe. Treatments for obstructive sleep apnea may include therapies with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), Oral Appliances (OA) or surgeries. OA are best suited for mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea, but are also an alternative for severe cases when a patient cannot tolerate Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) treatment. They are also suitable for situations when there is no power for a CPAP machine such as camping and travelling. The appliances modify the upper airway by changing the posture of the mandible and tongue. The study was undertaken to review the available types of oral devices. The article also discusses the side effects, complications from appliance therapies and comparison with CPAP therapies or surgeries

Comparative analysis of individual cast dowel crowns and prefabricated glassfiber reinforced composite posts – a literature review
Properties and use of castdowels and glassfiber reinforced composite posts are presented on the basis of the literature. Comparison of castdowels and glassfiber reinforced composite posts. Basing on the literature different authors’ results of modulus of elasticity, aesthetics, durability, types of luting cements and possibilities of castdowels and glassfiber reinforced composite posts removing in reendo cases were presented. Strength and durability of tooth containing post depend on post’s length, width, length of the walls of the root, post connection with dentine, load of the tooth, supragingival structure of the tooth and type of material used for making the post. If the post is properly cemented, there is no risk of breakage during physiological loads regardless of material it was made
