Myth and reality in South Africa's history: a conflicted past

    No full text
History matters. Some wish to bury it; others to use it selectively for their own purposes. But in the case of any nation it must be confronted honestly. Just as the Freedom Charter proclaims that South Africa belongs to all who live in it, so does its history. And the country was liberated by its people, not one specific group. Myth and Reality in South Africa’s History is a collection of eighty newspaper opinion pieces and feature articles published over a span of thirty years. Their purpose was to examine significant past lives, movements and events, and interpret their contemporary significance for a general readership. Emphasis was placed on individuals and organisations that had tended to be neglected by post-liberation discourse, which was prone to exaggerate the role of certain movements.N/

Tackling rural water scarcity in South Africa: climate change, governance, and sustainability pathways

    No full text
Water scarcity in rural South Africa is an escalating crisis driven by climate change, governance inefficiencies, and socio-economic disparities. This perspective synthesizes secondary data through the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and Socio-Ecological Systems (SES) frameworks, offering a novel lens that bridges macro-policy failures with micro-community resilience, unlike single-framework analyses. Drawing on existing case studies, including Cape Town’s “Day Zero” drought and the Greater Giyani Municipality, we highlight both current advances, such as smart metering, rainwater harvesting, and decentralized purification systems, and persistent vulnerabilities, including erratic rainfall, declining dam levels, and under-resourced infrastructure. The IWRM lens exposes gaps in institutional coordination, policy enforcement, and infrastructure investment that undermine equitable water distribution. The SES perspective reveals how rural communities navigate scarcity through informal networks, traditional knowledge, and local adaptation strategies, but also illustrates the limitations of these responses in the absence of state support. We argue that neither top-down governance nor grassroots innovation alone can achieve water security. Instead, sustainable solutions require hybrid, multi-scalar strategies that align regulatory reforms with community-driven resilience. Future efforts must prioritize adaptive infrastructure, context-sensitive technologies, and inclusive governance frameworks to build climate-resilient and equitable rural water systems. South Africa’s experience offers instructive lessons for global water governance, demonstrating the need for holistic, systems-based approaches that integrate technical, social, and institutional dimensions. This perspective contributes to a strategic framing for future policy and research aimed at ensuring long-term water security and sustainability in vulnerable contexts.

New African thinkers: considering peace and development in Africa

    No full text
Historically, fossil fuels, notably coal, have formed the foundational energy source underpinning industrialisation and economic expansion, providing reliable energy. However, this dependence on fossil fuels poses substantial challenges to sustainable development. While these energy sources have historically driven economic progress, they are simultaneously the predominant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating climate change and causing environmental degradation.

Parental & caregiver involvement in South African education

    No full text
This book is an edited collection of chapters that focus on parent and caregiver involvement in South African schools, bringing together research and practice. The authors explore research, experiences, and lessons about parental and caregiver involvement across the education system, from early childhood development to basic education. The chapters move across times, places, and themes, raising questions for the future of educational research on parent and caregiver involvement in South African schools. While there is a strong emphasis on educational research, there is also concern for interventions and prospective futures more broadly.

Unequal realities: women’s diverse experiences of science and technology in South Africa

    No full text
Significant strides have been made through national policies and targeted programmes to promote women’s participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in South Africa. The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation’s (DSTI) Science Engagement Strategy serves as a national framework to coordinate initiatives that spark public appreciation for the role of science and technology in driving a knowledge-based economy and improving quality of life for all. The National Development Plan 2030, the White Paper on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) and the STI Decadal Plan all highlight the importance of advancing economic development and ensuring the equitable inclusion of women.N/

The historic town of Grand-Bassam as an example of transmodern heritage

    No full text
Paper precented at the international Symposium on modern heritage in the antropocene, University College London, 26-28 OctoberInscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2012, the Historic Town of Grand-Bassam includes Quartier France, established in the 19th century as the first colonial capital of present-day Ivory Coast, and N'zima village inhabited by the N'zima kotoko (kctckc) people. Even a brief analysis of these two sections of Grand-Bassam juxtaposed with each other - their planning and development in the 19th and 20th centuries, structural and functional organisation as well as architectural variety - reveals the fundamentals of the Western modern/colonial project at play. Seen in this light, the Historic Town of Grand-Bassam reflects the core-periphery dynamic that, created by the coloniser, shaped relations between the Europeans and the local populations in this territory in colonial times. This paper, however, proposes a different lens to interpret the UNESCO World Heritage property, namely a decolonial framework of transmodernity, which allows to affirm the social, economic, political and cultural alterity of the African communities of Grand-Bassam and to appreciate the spatial organisation, built heritage and aesthetics of Quartier France and N'zima village as two distinct realities that coincide.N/

Pemodelan Prediksi Umpan Pulverized Coal pada Sistem Rotary Kiln Pabrik Semen Berdasarkan Parameter Operasi & Kimia Berbasis Machine Learning

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
