O krok. A bude to stačit, myslíš?
Traces of Cornelius Gallus in the works of Croatian poetry in Latin
In this paper, the influence of Cornelius Gallus on the works of Ragusan humanist poet Ilija Crijević is examined using digital databases. Crijević quotes part of a verse written by Gallus, domina dicere digna mea, even though the so-called New Gallus fragment was found centuries after Crijević composed his Carmina. Further indications were found of Gallus' influence on Crijević, also detailed in the paper, a possible origin of which is discussed, with the authors concluding that Crijević likely referenced Gallus' works directly. Thus, the final section of the paper is dedicated to a discussion of where Crijević could have accessed Gallus' Carmina, and the possible fate of that manuscript. The authors determine that Luko Stulli, also from Dubrovnik, citing almost an entire verse from the New Gallus fragment, likely consulted Gallus directly, leading to the conclusion that a copy of Gallus' text existed in Dubrovnik until, at least, the 19th century

L'ambivalente gioco delle contrapposizioni nella difesa delle donne in un'opera attribuita a Ortensio Lando
The present paper will highlight the arguments Ortensio Lando used to praise or mock women, explaning what resources he employed to discredit or exalt certain female figures of his time. The study is based on the careful and in-depth observation of the work entitled Una breve prattica di medicina per sanare le passioni dell'animo, by focusing both in the close study of the socio-cultural aspects of the author's time, albeit briefly, and in the analysis of the structural configuration of the text. Some names of the women who enjoyed Lando's great admiration and the author's works in which they appear will also be mentioned. The article concludes with the transcription of two pieces of advice that once again emphasise Lando's ambivalent 'game' of opposites.
Diving into harmony : exploring aquatic metaphors and wellbeing
This paper explores positive experiences of water expressed in French and their English translations, with a focus on wellbeing. Language shapes how we relate to nature, influencing our thoughts and behaviours. While patterns of positive framing of water are often overshadowed by negative discourses related to aquatic ecosystems, highlighting positive experiences is crucial for understanding water's role in healing and transformation. The tenets of cognitive linguistics motivate this study to analyse the conceptualisation of water showing how humans mentally structure positive water-human relationships through language and thought. Extending cognitive linguistic theory to an ecolinguistic framework offers a niche for studying water metaphors. These metaphors are not treated in isolation but are examined within a wellbeing context to identify patterns of rich sensory experiences and sustainable relationships with water. This is demonstrated through the qualitative analysis of 150 water metaphors that showcase the most prevalent ones related to wellbeing and the emotions they evoke, emphasising water's role as a restorative environment
Intersecting Discourses : How Finnish Principals Construct Meaning and Value Foundations for Inclusive Leadership
Principals have a central role in developing inclusive school cultures through leadership for vision, value discourse, and structural implementation. We investigate how Finnish principals construct the meaning of inclusion and related values in their leadership of comprehensive schools. We also examine how they navigate the tensions between ideological commitment to inclusion and challenges experienced in practical implementation. Drawing from Laclau and Mouffe's discourse theory, we analyzed six focus group interviews with a total of 21 principals, which revealed three major discourses allowing us to understand the phenomenon of leading inclusion and the underlying value foundation inclusion is constructed upon: constructing the meaning of inclusion with value foundations, constructing the role of teachers in promoting inclusion, and assembling the inclusive school community puzzle pieces. Our findings highlight the multi-layered nature of inclusive leadership, demonstrating how principals actively bridge different discourses by articulating concerns as part of a broader change process while maintaining a clear value-based direction for inclusive development. This study emphasizes inclusive leadership requiring a thorough understanding of inclusion that covers all aspects of diversity, not just special education. Principals should work to support the development of teachers' professional identities to promote collective responsibility and improve their skills and knowledge.Principals have a central role in developing inclusive school cultures through leadership for vision, value discourse, and structural implementation. Love as a Virtue and Care as Its Aspect: The View of Philippa Foot
This paper argues that love is a genuine virtue and that its most important aspect is care. We examine this concept through the lens of Philippa Foot’s ethical naturalism, which grounds morality in objective facts about a species’ “life form.” This framework positions love not as a mere emotion, but as a learned disposition of the rational will that integrates both cognitive and emotional elements. We leverage the rigorous neo-Aristotelian analysis of R. Halwani, who demonstrates that care fully satisfies the two necessary criteria for being a cardinal virtue: it is defined as a reasoned disposition to feel a cluster of appropriate emotions and is indispensable for human flourishing. By interpreting love as an active disposition of care—concerned with helping living beings to flourish—this paper demonstrates how this virtue serves as a foundation for a flourishing, interdependent human life, both as recipients and givers of care. This robust view provides a strong defense against cynical reductionist views like Nietzsche’s immoralism, showing that love, anchored in rational character traits like care, is a practical and essential component of a good life
Human-Conceptual Morality and the Intrinsic Value of Nature: A Virtue-Ethical Approach
This paper examines the concept of intrinsic value in environmental ethics by exploring its different forms. Advocating a mind-dependent interpretation, it builds on the naturalistic virtue ethics of Philippa Foot. By proposing several modifications to Foot’s theory—incorporating insights from contemporary biology and synthesizing naturalistic and constructivist approaches—the paper argues that while certain parts of non-human nature may possess intrinsic value based on natural teleology, the evaluative process is exclusively human-centred. This claim becomes even more evident in the transition from intrinsic to moral value. Ultimately, the paper suggests that moral consideration of the environment depends less on adherence to norms and more on the moral character and motivation of the acting agent
The beginnings of Baldassarre Fontana's work in Moravia : a stucco artist in the service of the Liechtensteins in Valtice and Moravský Krumlov
The study focuses on the early work in central and eastern Europe of the stucco artist and sculptor Baldassare Fontana (1661–1733). It is based on an analysis of archival documents from the Liechtenstein family archive in Vienna and points out for the first time the key role that the Liechtenstein family played in the first years of Fontana's activities in Moravia, and evidently also their fundamental part in his coming here. Based on archival documents and stylistic comparisons, the known catalogue of works by Baldassare Fontana is extended with the stucco decoration of the portal of the chapel dedicated to the plague patrons St. Sebastian, St. Roch and St. Rosalia in the Church of St Bartholomew in Moravský Krumlov, the seat of the Moravian Liechtenstein secundogeniture. It places the commission from Maximilian Jakob Moritz von Liechtenstein (1641–1709) into the context of the activities of other artists active in Moravia at the end of the 1680s. It also gives attention to Fontana's no longer extant commissions for Johann Adam Andreas von Liechtenstein (1657–1712) at the château in Valtice. Although these Valtice works by Baldassare Fontana have not survived, analysis of the documents allows us to reconstruct the artistic networks in which this stucco artist and his collaborators moved, and to better understand the meanings of various places with specific local and cultural parameters within Fontana's work
