    Mazahua Literacy Project

Mazahua is an indigenous language of Mexico that currently has about 100,000 speakers. What this language and many other indigenous languages need are literacy curricula and materials to help speakers of this language learn to read and write in their first language. Research has demonstrated that students who learn to read and write in their home language will be more successful when it comes to learning to read and write in the language that is dominant in society (in this case, Spanish in Mexico). This project details a coordinated effort to create initial literacy materials for first-grade students who are learning to read and write in Mazahua in Mexico. The presenters used Canva.com to create templates using the Mazahua alphabet for items such as letter booklets, tracing documents, and simple reading exercises. The presenters worked with Mazahua linguists and educators to create lists of words that could be used in the templates; this required ongoing communication between the presenters and the speakers of Mazahua in order to avoid errors in vocabulary or spelling. Presenters used WhatsApp to communicate with speakers of the language. Challenges of this project include not knowing Mazahua; the presenters relied entirely on the information provided by the Mexican colleagues. Not being speakers of a language that one is creating literacy materials for is a challenge in that the timeline for revisions is affected; the presenters had to send questions and ask for feedback to Mexican colleagues who may not have been able to respond immediately. Additionally, there is not a lot of resources for Mazahua online. Items presented include letter booklets for each letter of the alphabet, in which students must trace the letter, read words that include the letter, and then copy the letter. Other items include a fill-in-the-blank sheet for each letter of the alphabet, in which students must fill in the missing letter of a familiar word. These sheets required finding appropriate clip-art pictures to accompany the words and appropriate, high-frequency words for the sheets themselves. Mazahua vocabulary was tracked using a shared spreadsheet to inform future efforts. There are many challenges remaining for creating literacy materials for indigenous students, including the process of literacy acquisition in Mazahua, lack of funds to foster the creation of materials, and the need for research in best practices around indigenous literacy

Position Utilization and Leadership of Senior Woman Administrators in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference

This study investigates the utilization and impact of the Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) position within the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), focusing on job satisfaction and career confidence. Historically, women led collegiate women’s sports, but with the consolidation of men’s and women’s athletics under a single governance structure, female representation in leadership declined. While women make up 44% of NCAA athletes, only 27.2% of athletic directors are women (Statista, n.d.). The SWA role was created to ensure women have a voice in athletic department decision-making. This mixed-methods study explores whether the SWA role is fulfilling its original purpose of promoting meaningful female leadership. Data were collected from 12 of 14 SWAs in the NSIC through Qualtrics surveys and Zoom interviews. The goal was to assess how the role is being implemented and its perceived effectiveness in supporting women’s advancement. Insights from this study aim to support continued improvement and clarity of the SWA designation within collegiate athletics for athletic departments, the NSIC, and the NCAA

Cripistemology and Creative Practice: Disability, Aesthetics, Digital Art, Generative AI

Dr. Memmott’s presentation will showcase “Introducing Lary”—an ongoing AI project that explores the re-invention of the self following life-changing cancer surgery and treatment. This talk profiles the artist’s experience with a laryngeal cancer diagnosis and the medical interventions that follow. Utilizing a variety of AI platforms for both video and image production along with journal entries and medical reports as text prompts, the resulting work is a set of distinctive media that range, in Dr. Memmott’s words, “from the mythic to the horrific; the historical to the speculative.” Though at times the resulting media may emphasize the emergent body horror of cancer surgeries and treatments, this work serves as a form of therapeutic aesthetics for the artist as patient, and a fearless exploration of how AI workflows can enable art practices as a form of cripistemological expression. In addition to exploring features of this project, this presentation will also include two video works: Introducing Lary: The San Biagio Frescoes of Pietro Golamuto, and Introducing Lary: A Cripistemology of Breath. This presentation is available to all students, faculty, staff, and is open to the public

Measured, Baked and Glazed: Predicting Sales and Securing Wholesale Accounts for Donut Star

Applied research was conducted, which included reviewing news articles, industry reports, and descriptions of state licensure. Key insights revealed that the bakery\u27s current challenges influenced previous owners to sell Donut Star. This project is the first to gather data and provide a strategic analysis for Donut Star. It aims to help Donut Star increase wholesale accounts and incentivize direct consumers to preorder. Diffusion of Innovation Theory was used to develop the communication strategy. Primary research included in-depth interviews with management and observations of direct consumers. Findings revealed that Donut Star was not making ordering information readily available or effectively tracking data and was losing revenue weekly from discarded products. These findings helped establish a campaign with goals and objectives for reducing losses and growing sales with the bakery\u27s publics. The research influenced a creative idea, Life is cruller without a donut, which influenced strategies and tactics for the campaign. This project includes an implementation plan and a framework for evaluating the success of the strategies. This project identifies activities to grow Donut Star. If these recommendations are implemented successfully, Donut Star will increase its wholesale accounts, better track metrics, and reduce lost revenue due to discarded products

Asset and Deficit Thinking: Ed.D. Students’ Perceptions and Preferences around their Instructors’ Feedback

This study investigated cohort-based Ed.D. students’ perceptions and preferences related to deficit and asset-based instructor feedback. The researchers collected data from 28 current Ed.D. students through a survey based on Henderson et al.\u27s (2016) Feedback for Learning questions. While students generally perceived feedback as asset-focused, they expressed a need for more growth-oriented, individualized responses. Additionally, male participants significantly perceived more asset-based feedback than females, suggesting that demographic alignment between instructors and students may influence perceptions around feedback. Implications suggest that Ed. D. faculty can enhance feedback practices by choosing transactional or transformative approaches based on students\u27 needs and preferences, offering constructive critique while affirming students’ intellectual and individual assets. The findings indicate that institutions may benefit from fostering faculty reflection on implicit bias, supporting equitable feedback strategies, and considering how students, instructors, and educational systems perpetuate deficit thinking. Future research could examine feedback preferences across varied student populations, scale up the present study, integrate demographic information, such as race or ethnicity, into the study, and explore qualitative narratives to deepen understanding of how asset-based feedback supports meaningful learning among education doctoral students
