    Distribution of Megalithic Sites in Bondowoso: Type and Its Characteristic.Result of archaeological research in Bondowoso area indicate a number of 801 megaliths which are grouped into 8 types concerning cylindrical stones, sarcophagi, dolmen, stone mortar, stone chamber, statue, menhir, and stone seat. After being studied using nearest-neighbor analysis, they simply show the existence of 26 megalithic sites distinguished by clustered pattern. Analysis of sites and type of megalith yield 3 groups based on variance of type megalith that is group of sites by low character, medium character, and high character. The empiric data indicate that 73% of sites predominated by a group of low variance character, which indicated that there are less complex activities. Even though, some sites also show character with more possible complexes are place for doing activities oflarger one in a group of broader communities.     The Weda Ceremony in East Java: New Studies on the Dinoyo lnscripsion. Most scholars are of the opinion that the inscription ofDinoyo, dating from 760 AD, is closely related to Chandi Badut. The god Putikeswara from the inscription is similar to the Siva lingga of the temple. The statue of Agastya mentioned in the inscription is also found at Chandi Badut (Bosch 1924, Poerbatjaraka 1926,. de Casparis 1942). Other scholars change their view. Based on the architecture, B. de Haan fixes the date of Badut around the 8th-9th centuries AD, later than the inscription. Vogler gives a date of the early tenth century which is according to him, later than Prambanan. Both still follow the view that the Dinoyo inscription is of a Hindu characteristic. After studying the inscription of Dinoyo, writer of this paper comes to the conclusion that it owns Vedic characteristics: the rites mentioned, like havis, caru and snana, the variouS'1Jriests and personage leading the ceremonies, Agastya a vedic priest, as the highest venerated personage while at Chandi Badut he is only one of Siva's followers, the rites which are carried out seem to be based on the Somayajfi

    The Geology of Kobatuwa Site, Residency of Ngada Central Flores, East Nusa Tenggara. Kobatuwa Site is a part of Soa Basin, which is located at the Piga village, Soa Sub-district, Ngada Regency, EastNusa TenggaraProvince. Geographically this site is situated at 8°41 'l 7,4" Southern Latitude and 121 °05' 16,4" Eastern Hemisphere. Morphologically, the Kobatuwa Site formed by weakly undulated hills with maximum elevation of about 325 m high above sea level. The main river and its tributaries show centripetal drainage pattern and they belong to periodic and episodic rivers. The rocks unit at the Kobatuwa site and its surroundings are: Tuff Unit (Early to Middle Pleistocene), Volcanic Breccia Unit (Early to Middle Pleistocene), Conglomerate Unit (Early to Middle Pleistocene), and Alluvial Deposits (Holocene). Normal fault is found in theKobatuwa Site and surroundings. The lithic and bone fragments of vertebrate fossil bones found at the Kobatuwa Site and its surroundings provide an information of the aspect and the characteristics of the cultural remains at this area. The relative dating of this site reveals 700,000 - 60,000 years BP, and the lithic artifacts from the Kobatuwa Site are classified as the massive tools

    Lingkungan dan Lansekap Situs Kampung Kuno Kao: Faktor Determinasi Permukiman dan Pusat Islamisasi di Halmahera Utara

    Abstract. Kao Old Village Site, is a fairly developed settlement site during the early Islamization in the hinterland of North Halmahera. Environmental and landscape characteristics Watersheds, wetlands and agricultural lands are the reasons for the selection of past settlement sites, especially early in the development of Islam in the North Halmahera region. This study focuses on archaeological surveys to look at archeological data relationships both artefactual and features as well as the environment, which explains that the carrying capacity of the environment in the Old Kao Kampug Site is a factor determining the rapid progress of a region to live. The results showed that based on the distribution and density of archaeological remains, the Kao Old Village Site is a fairly dense settlement site, in addition to the environmental carrying capacity to be the source of production and economic resources, a factor that determines the development of the region as a residential area. Environmental data indicate the existence of a very advanced source of production and economic population, even part of the process of exchange and commerce with other outside areas in the chain of trade and network Islamization in the region of North Halmahera. In addition to landscape or landscape conditions, it is an environmental characteristic in the spatial distribution process, which shows the prevailing patterns and cultural systems of society, and this shows that the cultural traits of the community at that time were prosperous.Abstrak. Situs Kampung Tua Kao merupakan situs permukiman yang cukup berkembang pada masa awal Islamisasi di wilayah pedalaman Halmahera Utara. Karakteristik lingkungan dan lansekap Daerah Aliran Sungai, lahan basah, dan lahan pertanian merupakan alasan pemilihan lokasi permukiman penduduk pada masa lampau, terutama masa awal perkembangan Islam di wilayah Halmahera Utara. Kajian ini menitikberatkan pada survei arkeologi untuk melihat hubungan data arkeologi baik artefaktual maupun fitur serta lingkungan, yang menjelaskan bahwa daya dukung lingkungan di wilayah Situs Kampug Tua Kao merupakan faktor yang menentukan maju pesatnya suatu wilayah untuk bermukim. Hasil penelitian berdasarkan sebaran dan kepadatan temuan arkeologi menunjukkan Situs Kampung Tua Kao merupakan situs permukiman yang cukup padat. Selain itu, daya dukung lingkungan yang menjadi sumber produksi dan sumber ekonomi menjadi faktor yang sangat menentukan berkembangnya wilayah ini sebagai wilayah permukiman penduduk. Data lingkungan menunjukkan adanya sumber produksi dan ekonomi penduduk yang sangat maju, bahkan menjadi bagian dari proses pertukaran dan perniagaan dengan wilayah-wilayah lainnya dalam mata rantai perdagangan dan jaringan Islamisasi di wilayah Halmahera Utara. Kondisi bentang lahan atau lansekap yang merupakan karakteristik lingkungan dalam proses distribusi ruang menunjukkan pola dan sistem budaya masyarakat yang berlaku, dan hal ini menunjukkan ciri budaya masyarakat pada masa itu sudah sangat berkembang

    Application Cultural Resources Management in Archaeology as a Discipline. Cultural Resource Management (CRM) attempt to manage the related cultural resource in respect with the interest of many parties. In broader sense, CRM positioned the people as an integral part of the process of managing archaeological resources. In order to be able to wisely accommodate such interest and prevent the eruption of conflicts, it is necessary to involve many parties--in planning, implementing until evaluating--in the CRM perfonnance. Therefore, the CRM performance tends to stress on the effort of problem solving and to seek the best and the most reasonable solution. In regard to the above context it is obvious that there is a difference between the performance of CRM and archaeology in general. The performance differences between the two are noted on new dimensions developed in the CRM perfom1ance which cannot be found in that of archaeology. The new dimensions are related to external aspects of archaeological interests such as economy, education, tourism, community, politics and regulation. In other words, the CRM performance concerns with the heterogenic interest of stakeholders. Such concept of performance is not observable in the broad-spectrum of archaeological pe1 ormance, which is likely to focus on the aspect of material culture preservation. Hence, the performance of CRM does not terminate at the preservation of material culture instead it also involves the benefiting of material culture in respect to the ability to disclose the social significance of cultural heritage in the life of the people, which is the essence of perfonnance CRM

    TINGGALAN MEGALITIK DI KAWASAN PASEMAH SUMATERA SELATAN: KAJIAN ARKEOLOGI PUBLIK

      Abstract. In this globalization era, the management of cultural heritage has improved significantly. The general public is now considered capable and has the right to manage their cultural heritage. The problem is how to make archaeology needed by the public and becomes part of their daily lives. Previous researches show that almost all megalithic remains in Pasemah, particularly the statues, are broken, and many stone burials and dolmens are transformed into washing boards or building foundations. This research aims to seek a suitable model for public-based management of cultural heritage in Pasemah. The method used in this research is descriptive-explanatory which is used to explain the phenomenon of archaeological remains and their surroundings. There is also interviews with individuals or communities related with the cultural heritage management. The research reveals that the community now is more aware about the issue and expecting for more courses or discussion forums about cultural heritage in their regions. In addition to preservation of the cultural heritage in Pasemah area, this research also encourages people to be proud of their culture as part of the national identity.  Keywords: Public archaeology, management, megalithic in Pasemah, nation identity  Abstrak. Pada era globalisasi saat ini pengelolaan warisan budaya mengalami perkembangan sangat signifikan, yang semula bertujuan untuk kepentingan negara/pemerintahan sekarang menjadi pengelolaan untuk masyarakat luas. Masyarakat diangggap mampu dan berhak mengelola warisan budaya. Permasalahannya adalah bagaimana arkeologi bisa dibutuhkan oleh masyarakat dan menjadi bagian dari kehidupan sehari-hari masyarakat itu sendiri. Hasil penelitian di lapangan menunjukkan bahwa hampir semua tinggalan megalitik di Kawasan Pasemah, Sumatera Selatan, memperlihatkan kondisi yang tidak utuh, seperti arca-arca dan kubur batu (dolmen) yang hilang atau beralih fungsi menjadi papan cuci dan pondasi rumah. Tujuan penelitian adalah mengetahui model pengelolaan tinggalan budaya berbasis masyarakat, khususnya pada masyarakat di kawasan Pasemah. Metode yang digunakan bersifat deskriptif eksplanatif, yaitu menjelaskan fenomena tinggalan arkeologis dan lingkungannya dan melakukan wawancara secara mendalam melalui diskusi terfokus dengan pihak terkait yang dianggap berkepentingan terhadap pengelolaaan tinggalan budaya tersebut. Hasilnya adalah sebuah pemahaman tentang keterlibatan masyarakat dan menjadikan arkeologi sebagai bagian dari kehidupan yang profan di mana masyarakat meminta diadakan pelatihan ataupun ceramah arkeologi tentang tinggalan di daerahnya. Manfaat dari penelitian ini adalah untuk melestarikan warisan budaya di kawasan Pasemah dan memicu rasa kebanggaan terhadap budaya sendiri sebagai identitas bangsa. Kata kunci: Arkeologi publik, pengelolaan, megalitik pasemah, identitas bangs
