Kontekstbegrepet i sosiokulturell forskning på literacy

    No full text
In sociocultural research, the concept of context is essential to knowledge development. But often the concept has a vague and implicit position in research (Säljö, 2001). Actions, interactions, use of language etc. in situations, in context, are not fully explained or considered in light of artefacts and environments. In other words; in what way do context play a role in research, and where does the boundary of context go? And what kind of implications has boundary of context to knowledge development and epistemology? The aim of this article is to discuss and problematize these questions by some sociocultural approaches to the concept of context in research on literacy. Sociocultural theories represent different views on context and the boundaries of context. This implies different perspectives on different factors in the context; both physical observable factors (activities, artefacts, actions, interactions etc.), and non-observable factors or abstractions (attitudes, ideology, power, prejudices, beliefs etc.). To highlight various understandings and interpretation of context, and to do this explicit in research, will make the concept of context meaningful and an important basis of epistemology and knowledge development within qualitative research on literacy, but perhaps also other thematic issues. The article refer to and give some examples of research on literacy mostly within the field of vocational education to illustrate how different use of the concept of context give different knowledge of the relation context and literacy.I sosiokulturell forskning er begrepet kontekst vesentlig for kunnskapsutvikling.

    No full text
Bilder i hjemmet – hvordan visuelle uttrykk definerer muslimske rom i Norge

    No full text
The aim of this article is to investigate how Norwegian Muslim families cope with dilemmas created by contradictory traditions, such as Islamic and Western traditions, and to explore how they construct their visual and religious identity living in diaspora. The article is based on research that includes interviews with twenty young informants. The informants explain that they and their families classify pictures into two main categories: Religious calligraphic pictures are treated according to customs and rituals in the home. When it comes to figurative pictures with secular focus, the situation is different. Some figurative pictures, especially photographic portraits, generate conflicts in the families. There are different points of views regarding such pictures in Islam. The photographic portrait is often perceived as an agent in its own right, it is considered to inspire the beholder’s imagination and to have a disturbing influence if situated in places of prayer.

The I’m Learning! intervention methodology for quality learning environments in developing country contexts

    No full text
Within the context of the global learning crisis and calls to focus on the quality of education, one international organisation took a systematic and holistic approach to improve learning, wellbeing, and development in schools. Known as the Quality Learning Environment (QLE) Framework, it conceptualised the quality of the learning environment in schools with four guiding principles: emotional and psychological protection of learners, physical wellbeing of children, active learning processes, and close collaboration between school and parents/community. From 2013 – 2017, the framework was piloted in three countries of Cambodia, Uganda, and Zimbabwe to improve learning environments and outcomes while documenting the process, methods, and results of the QLE pilot in their country. The interventions in the three countries were closely tracked by a longitudinal research study. This paper explores the ambition of global and national research firms to carry out rigorous cross-country research alongside contextualized and evolving school interventions

Digital Capitalism, Datafication, and Media Education: Critical Perspectives

    No full text
As digitization and datafication continue to extend into all areas of society, digital capitalism becomes equally ubiquitous and universal. Digital capitalism, and related phenomena such as data, surveillance or platform capitalism, operate on the basis of a comprehensive expropriation and exploitation of personal data profiles. It functionalizes life worlds and places of education to an unprecedented extent. This special issue is responding to the following questions: What position/s can media education in research and application take to respond to these developments? Which theories, concepts and methods help to formulate adequate analytical, critical and transformative answers

A Gendered Analysis of Work, Stress and Mental Health, Among Professional and Non-Professional Workers

    No full text
This study examines the differences in mental health experiences of workers in professional and non-professional roles, with a particular focus on the influence of gender. We examine: i) the perceived mental health of a subset of professional workers including accounting, academia, dentistry, medicine, nursing, and teaching, chosen because they represent different gender composition and sectors; and ii) work stress and work absences. Statistical analyses were applied to data from the Canadian Community Health Survey and a related Mental Health and Well-Being survey. Those in the selected professions reported better mental health, higher job satisfaction, and a lower prevalence of mental disorders, but higher self-perceived life and work stress compared to workers in non-professional roles. Workers in these professions reported higher job security and higher job control, but also higher psychological demands. Women in these professions showed significantly higher physical exertion and lower job authority and higher rates of work absences

Student teachers and their attitudes towards ICT: Lesson learned from three different countries

    No full text
This paper explores the attitudes that student teachers in Malta, Norway, and Spain convey to digital technologies in formal educational settings as they start the 1st semester. A number of studies look at educational inclinations and employment of digital technologies (Granić & Marangunić, 2019; Ritter, 2017; Scherer & Teo, 2019). We have chosen to examine student teachers’ attitudes towards the professional use of digital technologies within a pedagogical framework. In this respect, a comparative qualitative analysis of one open-ended question that forms part of a more extensive questionnaire distributed to all participants is considered. The employed analytical lens subsequently centres on four concepts: ‘adaptability’, ‘creativity’, ‘critical thinking’, and ‘understanding of technology’. In this regard, our findings support arguments for asserting ‘attitude’ as a kind of teacher-specific digital competence for guiding their practice. We conclude by suggesting our analytical framework as a potential point of initiation for further development to understand attitudes as forming part of teachers’ specific digital competencies within teacher education and professional practice

Sløyden i endring: 35 år med NordFo 1985–2020

    No full text
Framing the concept design literacy for a general public

    No full text
Educating the general public to be design literate can be a catalyst for both environmental protection and degradation, human aid and human-made disasters depending on how the scope of design is framed – and how ‘design literacy’ is defined. This paper explores how to cultivate design literacy that supports critical innovation and a transition towards more sustainable societies. The research approach is a literature review of key texts that promote and conceptualize design literacy as part of general education. Four narratives are identified as vital: a) ‘Awareness through making’, b) ‘Empower for change and citizen participation’, c) ‘Address complexity of real-world problems’, and d) ‘Participate in design processes’. Moving towards more sustainable modes of consumption and production, a design literate general public provides a critical mass of users empowered to question how a new innovation supports the well-being of people and the planet and to voice their own ideas.Educating the general public to be design literate can be a catalyst for both environmental protection and degradation, human aid and human-made disasters depending on how the scope of design is framed – and how ‘design literacy’ is defined.
