Managing Stigma: Prostitutes and their Communities in the Southern Netherlands, 1750-1800
This article examines the relationship between prostitutes and the communities in which they lived through the lens of stigma and stigma management. In the Southern Netherlands between 1750 and 1800, prostitutes were well aware of social tensions and negative sanctions that could result from their behaviour. To avoid conflict, they often concealed their trade in everyday interactions. If they were unable or unwilling to do so, families, neighbours, and authorities often felt the need to take action to safeguard the values of the social order—and their own reputations. For immediate support, prostitutes therefore often turned to each other.

A Few Fabulous Fragments: Historical Methods in James P. Howley’s The Beothucks
Since it was published in 1915, James Howley’s The Beothucks has been an essential source for historians and novelists alike. Howley’s training as a geologist and surveyor shaped his scholarship. Rather than seeing his book as a history of the Beothuk, he saw it as preserving the memory of the Indigenous people of the island of Newfoundland. He deferred to philologists and ethnographers on issues of theory and most effectively marshalled his critical sense when evaluating the oral testimony he collected. This reading of the book revisits the foundational text and shows the lasting legacy of Howley’s scientific method and cultural assumptions upon the historiography and popular culture of the Beothuk.

This research note discusses the nature of documents collected in three local archives in the People’s Republic of China (cities of Qingdao and Jinan and province of Shandong) and how these documents can be interpreted. Based on the singular case of sports boards’ archives, the objective is to determine the conditions and types of comparison under which these documents provide better insight into the structure of the Chinese administration and the nature of the political turbulence affecting it. This note also emphasizes three points, namely the difficulties associated with proceeding in accordance with the canons of microhistory, the attention that must be paid to the header information appearing on archived documents, and the crucial importance of in-depth semantic study of bureaucratic language.
