Can the Discursively Privileged Think?: A Re-Articulation of Social Justice
This paper interrogates Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s Can the Subaltern Speak? and Wendy Brown’s Wounded Attachments, applying their critiques of the Subject to explore a possible re-articulation of the social justice framework. Contemporary mainstream social justice articulations are disrupted when Spivak and Brown problematize issues of identities rooted in injury and representation of marginal positions. Social justice must move beyond ‘good intentions’ and the tension between egalitarianism and liberal democracy, and in such a way that does not heighten the position of intellectuals, but rather questions and disrupts our presupposed authority
German Atrocities Against Allied Prisoners of War in the First World War
The German atrocities towards Allied prisoners of war during the First World War is a topic that is widely over-looked. Millions of Allied POWs were taken prisoner and held captive by the Germans. At the hands of their captors, the Allied POWs suffered brutal atrocities in the form of violence and inhumane conditions. Through ignoring the Hague Convention\u27s laws of war to the many months or even years spent in POW camps in Germany to the impact of the period of captivity, the Allied POWs endured atrocities commited by the Germans. In examining the many ways the Allies suffered, the atrocities are now being brought to light
Technology and disabilities: Why it can help and hinder learning
Technology is a common occurrence in almost every elementary classroom today. In this research study, I am going to be discussing how technology can have both a positive and negative effect on students who have disabilities. My research methods included conducting an online survey and two interviews with parents and teachers. Through my research, I found that there are many concerns with how technology is used in the classroom, but for the most part it ends in a positive outcome for the students. However, there is always room for improvement when using digital technologies, and my research demonstrates that it takes cooperation between the parents and the teachers for technology to truly be successful for an elementary student. As a teacher candidate, my findings have shown how important technology is to elementary students, and how, when used in an appropriate manner, technology can be an incredible tool for students with disabilities to use
A wired connection: Parental engagement and digital technologies
This is a research study, which evaluates the impact of digital technologies on parental engagement in elementary education. Parental engagement is critical in children’s education. Parents are incredibly influential in their child’s lives, it is important, then, that we engage parents in the classroom to create a collaborative learning environment that will contribute to student success. This study was conducted by administering surveys using Google Forms through e-mail and the Inspired Learning Network. Participants included parents and teachers throughout Alberta who were randomly selected. This research reveals that the primary method of contact between parents and teachers is through email or blog. The vast majority of participants believe that these digital technologies have improved and positively impacted parent-teacher relationships. These findings mean that we must use digital technology to create positive relationships between parents and teachers. These relationships contribute to a home to school, collaborative environment, which translates to student success in the classroom
Inquiry into the use of digital technology in elementary music education
Music education is an important part of a child’s elementary education. There are many types of new digital technologies that are appearing in our schools. Through inquiry research and the use of an online survey, in-person and email interviews, I have attempted to discover what digital programs or tools are out there to assist with learning the various musical concepts in elementary music curriculum, as well as how digital technology in music curriculum is used to keep the children engaged in their learning. The findings led me to a conclusion that people believe that music education at an elementary level is important, has both pros and cons, and must be used in correspondence with traditional teaching methods. Digital technology can be beneficial in music education if the teacher understands how to use it properly to promote active and engaged student learning
Digital technology for elementary English language learning (ELL) students
English language learners (ELL) are students who are learning English not as their first, but as second or even third language. A lot of the time these students do not speak English at home because they use their first language as the primary home language. These students may only get the opportunity to learn to speak English in school. In early elementary, kindergarten through Grade three, the primary focus is to develop language and literacy skills which will prepare the students for further educational learning. The old saying is that; first you learn to read and then you read to learn. In this study, I questioned how technology can be used to engage the early elementary ELL students to develop language and literacy skills. I conducted an anonymous survey and an email interview to gather my data. I found my results were inconclusive for determining which technologies would benefit the ELL elementary teacher in helping to develop language and literacy skills. There are many valuable technologies available; however, further research will be necessary to draw any distinct conclusions
The effects of technology on bullying
I chose this topic for inquiry because I have personal experience with bullying, and I wanted to know what I can do to combat bullying when I am an elementary teacher. Through an online survey and personal interviews, research has been conducted to answer the question whether or not the increased availability of technology to students in, and out, of the classroom has an impact on bullying. My data collection, through the use of an online survey and personal interviews, has led me to believe that the increased availability of technology does have an impact on the number of cases and severity of bullying. The second question that I set out to answer is what can teachers do to recognize and prevent bullying in their classroom. In a twenty-first century classroom, students need to be educated on how to safely use the Internet. This could include administering a digital citizenship course to students. Teachers must also be aware of the warning signs of bullying in order to recognize when it is happening and stop it in its tracks. The best way that teachers can combat bullying is to educate themselves, and their students about the dangers of bullying. As a future teacher, this information is important for me because it will allow me to do more to combat bullying in my classroom
