The role of digital reading technologies in developing language and literacy skills

    Get PDF
EBooks and other forms of digital reading technology are becoming increasingly popular in classrooms due to their perceived ability to improve engagement and positively contribute to language and literacy skills. This research study seeks to answer the question: Can eBooks be utilized to help improve early literacy and language skills, and contribute to the engagement of readers?  In an effort to answer this question data was collected from an online survey created using Google Forms. This survey data was further analyzed through an interview process. The survey data retrieved provides a surface level understanding of the perceived value of digital reading technologies. The data retrieved from this study indicates that digital reading technologies are convenient and can increase the accessibility of reading materials, but that further research is necessary to determine the specific role of digital reading technologies in improving early literacy and language skills

Identifying factors related to the prevalence of technological misuse among elementary students

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to reveal the imperatives of introducing effective technology studies and digital citizenship skills in our elementary classrooms. Perspectives from current and future elementary teachers are combined with recent research to analyze student awareness and exposure to common social media dangers such as cyber-bullying, low self-esteem, and gaming violence. This study is important because it sheds light on the average age of exposure to social media among elementary students, demonstrating the gap between educational instruction and student preparation to participate safely in a digital world. Negative technology use is examined in relation to child development and peer relationships, providing insight for emerging teachers on their role in actively engaging Net Generation learners

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Using technology to engage students in outdoor education: Does it inhibit or benefit the students’ experience?

    Get PDF
In this paper, the benefits and drawbacks of incorporating technology into outdoor education are discussed. The data was collected during an inquiry based project for an educational technology course. This research is important because of the growing epidemic of children staying indoors with their technology rather than going and enjoying outside. There always seems to be a divide between outdoor education, or being outdoors in general, and modern technology. However, by using modern technology students may be engaged and drawn into outdoor education. Therefore, incorporating technology into outdoor education may be something to consider. This study analyzed the possible effects on students of incorporating technology into an experiential learning opportunity of being outdoors. The participants of this study were predominantly Education students at Mount Royal University, Education faculty members, as well as people from other occupational backgrounds who felt strongly about outdoor education

Assistive technology for reading and writing, and coping with anxiety

    Get PDF
It seems that in the 21st century digital technology has evolved to help, assist, and support students with their learning. I wanted to research about anxiety in students and coping with their struggles in reading and writing because it connects with me on a personal level. I did not have the luxury to use the assistive technologies that are out there today. I wanted to find out the benefits and disadvantages of using assistive technologies with students that have anxiety. I believe researching this topic will help me in my future teaching practice because I will have gained more knowledge about my topic. To obtain some background knowledge about my topic, I had to do some research about anxiety in students and students who have difficulties in reading and writing. Through this background research I now have a better understanding about assistive technology and how it can help students. From my research findings, I learned that yes assistive technology can help students with anxiety and problems with reading and writing, but to not let the students become too dependent on the technology. I also found out to make sure the technology matches with the student because if not then the student will avoid using the technology and anxiety can increase. Another key take away from my findings was that I need to be knowledgeable about the assistive technologies I plan on using with students. If I do not have the knowledge it is not going to help a student who has certain learning needs

    Get PDF
Biography of a runaway slave is the title of the “testimonio” of Esteban Montejo, a Cuban slave, compiled and written by Miguel Barnet. In this text, Montejo expresses his ideas on the Catholic religion, as well as on Afro-Cuban religious beliefs and practices. It is suggested that the ideology of the Cuban revolution is present in the text. The expressions of indiference towards religion can be read as part of a textual message that agrees with the ideas of the revolution.
