Inquiry based learning and technology, negative or positive?
In this research paper, the conflicts with the implementation of inquiry based learning and digital technology into an elementary school setting are explored. They are investigated under the grounds of an inquiry-based research study conducted mainly through online surveys. This survey was important because there were two deployed: one to current teachers and one to future teachers. The aim was to discover what conflicts teachers were having with inquiry based learning and whether or not technology was a negative or a positive attribute with the implementation of inquiry based learning (IBL). Also, I wanted to discover what future educators think about their future teaching roles and whether or not they will use digital technologies to help with IBL in the classroom. The participants were Mount Royal University Education students as well as K-9 teachers and staff throughout several schools in Calgary, Alberta. Analysis from the surveys and written responses will document the practicing teacher and future teacher perspectives on inquiry based learning through digital technologies
Technology as a resource: Increasing engagement in learning and developing 21st century skills
The purpose of this research study was to help inform the researcher’s future practice as a teacher on the influence of technology on young learners. The question of inquiry pertained to define how technology has initiated and increased student engagement within their learning, and through this, how technology has specifically influenced the creation of the 21st century learner. By beginning the inquiry through a literature review on the theme of technology and student engagement, the researcher was able to gain an understanding that technology is the motivator for children in developed, and even in undeveloped countries. In order to assess the relationship of technology and student engagement in learning, along with how digital devices influence the creation of 21st century learners, the researcher surveyed a variety of teacher candidates and university students to draw conclusions. From the research findings of the study, the researcher concluded that students were attracted to technology as it is a tool that is convenient in organizing information, and is efficient in making data easier to allocate. Therefore, the skills that technology imparted upon 21st century learners from the findings were allowing students to become self-directed learners, access and, evaluate information through critical thinking and solving data to become more engaged thinkers, and influencing leadership and collaboration skills
The relationship between student engagement, teacher proficiency, and technology
The purpose of this research project was to see if there are any connections between student engagement and teacher proficiency when digital technology is being used in the elementary classroom. In order to determine if such a connection does exist, scholarly articles were reviewed and an online survey of students in the Bachelor of Education Program was conducted. Through scholarly review, it was determined that there is a direct connection between the proficiency of the teacher using the digital technology and the engagement of the students in the learning activity. If the teacher is highly proficient, then students are more likely to be engaged in the lesson. Through the online survey, teacher candidates answered questions about their own proficiency levels with specific digital technologies. From the findings of this project, it can be concluded that teacher proficiency is very important when it comes to engaging students through the use of digital technologies in the classroom. Professional development in this area would be useful for both teacher candidates and practicing teachers, as the use of digital technology in the elementary classroom is increasing
The benefits and drawbacks of using technology in outdoor education
This research study was designed to investigate teacher and student perspectives on using technology in outdoor education (OE) classes. I wanted to research this topic because I am passionate about physical and outdoor education and was curious to see how technology can be used in OE without taking away from the students’ relationship with their natural surroundings. I think technology can be very beneficial in any subject if used properly and not overused. I created a survey with Google Forms and sent it to education students, education professors, and attendees at the YYC Outdoor Education Networking Day at Connect Charter School on February 10th 2014. Many people who completed the survey said that technology, such as GPS units and computers, can be useful to help students research the outdoors and create projects. I also found that many people believe technology can be a distraction in OE. Overall there are many benefits and drawbacks to using technology in outdoor education
The Cremation of Sam McGee: A Brief History and Analysis
The Cremation of Sam McGee was first published in 1907 through Service\u27s Songs of A Sourdough. The work was not intended for a large audience and its publication actually sprouted from a Christmas bonus Service received. In this brief analysis, the Klondike gold rush, the life of Robert W. Service, and perhaps his greatest work, The Cremation of Sam McGee, are analysed for their significance to Canadian literary themes
Inquiry based learning and technology, negative or positive?
I completed this research study because I wanted to find out if assistive technologies in the elementary classroom are helping students with attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit, hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and anxiety issues to succeed, and what other people’s perspectives on the uses of those technologies were. An online survey was sent out using social media to reach parents, students, and teachers in order to get their perspectives on this question. I found that 45% of the people surveyed indicated that assistive technologies, in their opinion, are helping those students, while 13% said that they are not helping students. I also found that 72% of the people surveyed stated that, in their opinion, the use of these technologies is not giving students an unfair advantage, but rather leveling out the playing field, while 5% said that they believe that the use of digital technologies is giving students an unfair advantage. Based on my findings, I would say that these assistive technologies are benefiting students with ADD, ADHD, or anxiety issues, and that it does not give them an unfair advantage over other students, it just helps them to have the same chance at success as the others
