CODE-SWITCHING IN EFL CLASSROOM: IS IT GOOD OR BAD?
Code-switching has been an evolving topic since the bilingualism blooming in linguistics milieu. However, practitioners or experts have contrastive views regarding its use in classroom setting. While the proponents believe that the presence of code-switching in one side is considered as an asset to teach language, the opponents see it is as merely an obstacle to achieve learning goal that is to acquire target language. Code-switching serves many functions for both teacher and students yet it is still employed. Despite the pro and cons of the code-switching, this research aims to show the perspective of both teacher and students towards code-switching and functions it serve in EFL classroom setting. This research used qualitative descriptive approach and the data were taken from the informants of English department in one of university in Surakarta to explore whether the use of code-switching in EFL classroom was seen as beneficial tool. It begins by the general view of EFL use in everyday classroom. This current study found that code-switching was preserved as benefits as it served some functions for teacher to convey material and for students to received material and communicate in classroom

THE INFLUENCE OF MASTERING TARGET-LANGUAGE CULTURE ON THE STUDENTS’ LANGUAGE SKILLS
Mastering language in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context requires many aspects related to the language itself. This paper aimed to explore one of the aspects which influenced the students’ language skills which were the target-language culture. The current paper utilized qualitative research in the form of case study. Besides, the participants were the fourth-semester students of English department in Universitas Mataram. The method of collecting the data employed interview and observation. To validate the data, the triangulations of the data source and data collection method were utilized. At the end, to analyze the data, the interactive model was employed. The result revealed that 1). The students get the influences on their reading and speaking skills by learning target-language culture in Cross Culture Understanding (CCU) class, 2). The influence in reading can be seen when the students’ gaining new vocabulary from the texts they read and produced it when they spoke, and 3). In speaking, the students’ accent still affected greatly by the interference of their native accent and culture. The paper also suggests that employing the mixed method (quantitative and qualitative methods) might be useful and more preferable to see the influence on the students’ language skills as the effect of attending the CCU class and learning the target-language culture

The objectives of the study were to train clove farmers group about the post-harvest handling system in order to produce essential oils with export quality, to train clove farmers group in terms of essential oil processing system as well as to encourage clove farmers group to apply appropriate technology for processing of clove essential oil with export quality. In general, the main and most common problems faced by clove farmers are inadequate system of clove essential oil processing system, the handling system and equipment used are not up to standard, moreover, the technology used in handling, durability, and package of clove essential oils still very limited. The approaches offered and agreed by the clove farmer group are as follow: (1) General approach, (2) Determination of training participants, (3) Types and procedures of training (training strategy), and (4) Scale of the program. The expected targets and outcomes of this community service program are: Farmer groups are able to apply appropriate technology in the production of clove essential oil, both to post-harvest handling, processing and storage of clove essential oils to obtain added value. In fact, knowledge of farmers about post-harvest handling and processing technology of clove essential oil to increase farmer's income is still very poor. The results of analysis of essential oil clove processing showed that the clove leaves utilization as an effort to create an added value of farmer’s income by Rp. 13,000,000 per production unit. The difference in selling price between the dried clove leaves and processed clove leaves into essential oil was Rp. 10,765,000. Comparative test (t-test) showed that t-count value for selling dried clove leaves was 16,068 while clove leaves processed into essential oil was 35,108. The t-table value of 1,675 indicated that t count t table where H_0 is rejected and H_1 is accepted. It concludes that there is a comparative income of farmer who sells dried clove leaves and farmers who sell clove leaves in the form of essential oils
THE USE OF COLORFUL SEMANTICS TO IMPROVE SENTENCE CONSTRUCTION IN WRITING SENTENCES AMONG YEAR FOUR PUPILS
This action research was set out to develop pupils’ writing skill using colorful semantics. The main two objectives established from the outset were to develop pupils’ sentence construction and improve my teaching practice in sentence construction teaching respectively. As the researcher, I conducted this classroom action research to 31 pupils which comprised 17 males and 14 females of Year 4J of SJK(C) Cheng Siu 2 in Malaysia. The data was gathered through pre- writing test and post- writing test, pupils’ work as well as teacher’s reflective journal. Over the course of four weeks, I introduced colorful semantics to my pupils in accordance to the sequence of ‘who’, ‘what doing’, ‘what’ and ‘where’. As can be induced from the findings, colorful semantics was statistically significant to pupils’ sentence construction through the enhancement of pupils’ ability to understand words of each sentence part and also to write sentence in the correct order. The findings also depicted that utilization of colorful semantics improved my teaching practice to become a reflective, passionate, and motivational teacher. Therefore, the positive results warrant further research into colorful semantics with suggestions to integrate Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT) into lessons and expose pupils to more sentence types
THE EFFECT OF WASTE BAGASSE (Saccharum sp) FERTILIZER TOWARD GROWTH OF PEANUTS (Arachis hypogaea L.)
The process of sugar cane into sugar which is carried out in the sugar mill produces bagasse obtained from the milling process around 32% of the total cane processed. Sugarcane production in Indonesia in 2007 amounted to 21 million tons, the potential of bagasse produced about 6 million tons of bagasse per year. Up untill now almost every cane sugar mills uses bagasse as boiler fuel, animal feed mixes and the rest are burned or thrown away. One of alternative solid waste management is to turn solid waste into compost. The purpose of this research is to understand the effect of bagasse fertilizer on growth and progress of peanut plants (Arachis hypogaea L.). Bagasse fertilizer made using cow dung as bioactivator. Bagasse obtained from several places in Semarang mashed with finely enough size. Then, with a ratio of cow dung and bagasse 1: 3. Placed in a container then mix and sealed until there is no incoming air. Every 4 or 5 days in 4 weeks is being inverted. After 4 weeks it will get bagasse fertilizer with characteristic brown color, odorless and slightly moist. This research uses three treatments there are peanuts with mixed bagasse fertilizer on the soil medium, compost on the soil medium, and without fertilizer then measured the progress for 14 days. After 14 days, so it obtained an average of plants height and number of leaves. Respectively, are 2.10; 1.38; 2.24 while the number of leaves are 2.55; 2.66; 3.2
The Quality of Kampung Broiler (KB) Chicken Frozen Semen with DMA Concentrations on Yolk Lactate Ringer Diluent
Chicken Kampung Broiler (KB) is the result of a cross between a local chicken (chicken) with broiler imported chicken (broiler chicken). Testing the quality of frozen chicken semen from crossing needs to be done to get high productivity. This study aims to obtain a concentration of cryoprotectant Dimethyl Acetamide (DMA) the best of the concentration of 5%, 7% and 9% in chicken semen freezing KB. The semen used in this study came from three chickens of KB and repeated as many as nine times. Semen is collected by the method of message three times a week. Semen is evaluated macroscopically and microscopically. Subsequently spermatozoa were diluted with yolk diluent and the addition of three DMA cryoprotectant concentrations (5%, 7%, and 9%). Semen diluted 0:25 ml is packed into straw. Then equilibrated at a temperature of 5 ° C for two hours. After equilibration evaluation of motility and viability of spermatozoa. It is then frozen on liquid nitrogen vapor for 10 minutes. Frozen semen is then stored in liquid nitrogen containers at a temperature of -196 ° C. After 24 hours, the thawing semen in 37 ° C for 30 seconds. The results showed that the addition of DMA 9% in Ringer's lactate diluent yolk produces a percentage motility and viability after thawing is greater than 5% and DMA 7%. Neither the addition of DMA 9% concentration can increase recovery rate after thawin
