The Struggle of a Geisha in Maintaining Her Pride as Seen in Arthur Golden’s Memoirs of a Geisha
Get PDFThis thesis is entitled "The Struggle of Geisha in Maintaining Her Pride as seen in Arthur Golden\u27s Memoirs of a Geisha" seen from the perspective of structuralism. This research is limited on basic ideas that relate to the observation into three questions as follow: (1) how is geisha’s life before World War II (2) how was the geisha struggle after World War II, and (3) how is geisha maintaining her pride before and after second world war. The objectives of this research were (1) to analyze Sayuri’s life before World War II (2) to explain Sayuri\u27s life after World War II, and (3) to study and explain the types of struggles in maintaining her pride by Sayuri as the main female character , to oppose and think of Sayuri\u27s struggle to fight exploitation and significant meaning, and to find out and explain the depiction of Sayuri\u27s struggle. The theory used is from Gough and Gautam about the structural analysis used to answer the purpose of this research. For the method of data analysis, the author uses systematic procedures with novel understanding and structural theory. Data collection techniques use documentation techniques in finding data that is relevant to the subject of analysis. The object of this research is a novel entitled Memoirs of a Geisha written by Arthur Golden in 1997 and the data are sentences related to the struggle of a woman found in the novel. Sayuri as the main female character in the novel represents women in general who can gain their independence and have a smart and brave attitude to take the important decisions in their life
Psychological Conflict Between Men and Women in Susan Glaspell’s Trifles
Get PDFThe problem in this paper is psychological conflict between men and women. In the Trifles drama by Susan Glaspell, women seem to have no freedom in terms of expressing opinions, ideas and ideas only because of male domination. Plus women feel inferior just because the man is superior. This is manifested in the act of having to obey what men say to women both in the family environment and in the community.
In this writing, the writer uses descriptive research as the method of collecting the data. As for the data analysis method, after determining the theory obtained from the related book, the formulation of the problem is analyzed using the theory of psychology. By using the theory of Sigmund Freud, the characters in the drama are then further analyzed to understand the shape, causes and consequences of a conflict. Authors carry out structural methods with understanding drama, male and female characters. Data collection techniques use qualitative techniques by taking notes in collecting primary data. In data analysis techniques, the author uses techniques by interpreting data.
The results of the research in this survey are: 1) Forms of conflict obtained from female leaders whose actions are limited by men. 2) The causes of conflict comes from movements of female figures who do not want to be underestimated by male figures. 3) As a result of the conflict, Mrs. Wright killed her husband because he could not stand the treatment of her husband anymore. In closing, this drama tells the story of conflict between men and women. The mutual respect is very important between men and women
An Analysis of Linguistic Errors Made by EFL’s Adult Learners in Translating English into Indonesian language
Get PDFThe study was aimed at describing what linguistic errors namely, grammatical, syntactical, morphological, phnological and lexical errors that English education program students made in translating Indonesian language into English. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. Research participants were 19 sixth semester students of English education at STKIP YDB who took translation subject for academic year of 2018/2019. The research instrument was translation test derived from the students’ translation midterm examination which comprised translating 15 Indonesian sentences into English. Data was analyzed through error analysis in which was proposed by Ellis (1997) involving steps such as (1) collecting samples / data, (2) identifying the errors, (3) classifying translation errors, (4) explaining the errors, and (5) evaluating / interpreting the error.
The results of the study revealed that the main linguistic errors that the students had in translating Bahasa Indonesia into English was in lexical aspect. It was found that lexical error comprised 72,8% of total errors. For grammar and syntactical aspects, it was found that both contained 12,% of total errors made by the students. For morphological aspects, it was found that only 3,1% of total errors was made. For the linguistic problems in phonological aspects, surprisingly it was found 0% of total errors . It can be concluded language acquisition of these students in the linguistic component of English as a foreign language was inadequate in the act of translating, especially in the level of "lexicon" (vocabulary and choice of words), grammar and syntax

Where in the short story the 85-year-old grandmother who had been left by her husband and after the death of her husband the grandmother fought alone to support her child `namely mommys. But the child that grandmother hoped didn\u27t care about him. Mommy treats grandma very inhumanely. He put my grandmother under the kitchen and only had a thin blanket and used potluck utensils. Then mommy took grandma to a place and put her in a sandbox where I interpreted this as the last time for grandmother\u27s care and that was very tragic, like waiting for grandmother to die so they could live in peace. They did not care about mommy until mommypun died. This research aims to : (1) To explain the reader understand the extrinsic elements of The Sandbox drama. (2) To explain the reader understand and be able to describe what symbols are used from the drama The Sandbox. (3) To analyze the absurd symbols of The Sandbox drama.
This study uses the theory of Roland Barthes who put forward a sign or symbol and a little supporting theory from Saussasure. The method used in this research is descriptive analysis method and qualitative method, which is describing the collected data and then compiled it by analyzing a semiotic drama script which can be seen from its extrinsic elements that have absurd symbols. Based on the results of this analysis it can be said that in this analysis the writer found ten absurd symbols contained in the sandbox drama. From the results of this analysis there is also a picture of the theme raised for this drama is about the emptiness, emptiness, and loneliness of a person in which we as humans need love and affection from other humans
The Use of Code Mixing In The Scripts of Berita Ranah Minang TVRI Sumatera Barat Since January Until December 2018
Get PDFThis research is about of code mixing at Television News Program TVRI Sumatera Barat. The research problems are (1) What types of Code Mixing is used in the scripts of Berita Ranah Minang. (2) What are the reason of using code mixing and (3) What does language matrix as language in code mixing. The objective of this study are finding out the levels of code mixing and to explain the factor of using code mixing in scripts of Berita Ranah Minang.
The research uses descriptive and qualitative research. Technique of collecting data are (1) reading whole scripts since January until December, (2) collecting the data, the data are purposive data in the forms of word, phrase, idiom and baster, (3) classifying into five levels of code mixing, (4) reducing the data which has been selected based on the theory, it involves the process of selecting and focusing the raw data into refined data. The researcher uses content analysis which focuses on analyzing levels and factors of code mixing in script Berita Ranah Minang.
This research finds five levels of code mixing in script. Those are word level, phrase level, baster level and idiom level. The dominant level of code mixing is word level. The research also finds factors of code mixing. Those are code usage limitation, popular term, domicile and time of conversation, conversation topic, function and aim. Code mixing happens because of the characters have some characterization influences code mixing. The character that has prestigious, high level life style, modern characterization produce code mixing in a level phrase
An Analysis of Students\u27 Reading Ability in Identifying Generic Structure of News Item Text
Get PDFThis research aims to determine the ability of students to identify the generic structure of the news item text. This research uses a descriptive method. Data is taken through examinations in the form of multiple choice questions. The results showed that the ability of students to identify newsworthy events, event backgrounds and sources of news item texts was at a moderate level. This is evidenced by the percentage of student scores for each of the generic structures is 58.46%, 69, 23% and 61, 54%. Therefore, teachers are advised to discuss more and provide training on generic structure of the news item text. Then, students are advised to study harder to understand and do generic structure exercises from news item text. Furthermore, the next researcher is expected to conduct research related to the problems faced by students in identifying the generic structure of the news item text
The Study of Gay Slang in Bungus Teluk Kabung Padang
Get PDFThis research is sociolinguistics study of slang used by the gay in Padang which focuses on the use of slang especially in Bungus Teluk Kabung. This research using Wardhaugh and Holmes theory about varieties of language. The objectives of this research are (1) To identify the slang word employed by gay in Padang (2) To analyze the social context of the use of slang words in Padang (3) To reveal the reason why they use slang words. This research used descriptive qualitative and quantitative approach that is the research produces analytical procedures that do not use statistical analysis procedure. The source of data in this study is the gay conversation in Padang especially in Bungus, while the data in the form of words or diction derived from gays” utterances. The data in this study was collected by using the voice recording technique then they were classified and analyzed. The trustworthiness was attained by using credibility through two kinds of triangulation: by observes and theories.
The results of the research show three points. First, there are three types of gay slang employed by gay in Bungus that are offensive type, vulgar type, and taboo type. Second, the social context of slang use by gay in Padang. Third, the reason why they use slang. Based-on record strategy has the highest frequency among other strategies since the dialogues are among gay Bungus members who have a close relationship and know each other very well. And the next, the function of the study of gay slang in Bungus it teaches how to use the slang language and have the conversation go well and run smoothly. As a conclusion, the study of gay slang are the way to analyze some types of slang language in gay Bungus, social context, and to know the reason why they use that slang
Students’ Attitude Towards Small Group Discussion In Reading Comprehension

There are four skills of English language; listening, speaking, reading, writing. All of the skills is important and integrated each other. Almost all activity in the classroom has relationship with reading. As stated in Sukirah Kustaryo (1998) “Reading is a process of making sense of written text through meaningful interpretation in relation to reader’s use of text and experimental/conceptual background for concept of written language, story structure, purpose and content of what is read”. Reading comprehension is a skill in reading. The reader cannot get information without comprehending the text. Desciptive research was applied in this research. The object of this study is 30 students from management informatics department who take English 1 class. Observation and surveys were used as data collection in this study. The result above showed that not all the students have a positive attiude towards discussion activity in reading comprehension. A small number of them, about 2.34%, have a negative attitude towards it. The intelligence affects their comprehension in reading a text. They comprehend the text easier than other
