Complexity and feedback
Complexity is a multifarious concept; different researchers focus on different aspects. The situation for emergence is very similar to that for complexity in that there is no agreed-upon universal definition of emergence. The Hamiltonian framework provides a useful formal way for understanding the basis for many of the nonseparable phenomena of complexity. The concept of hierarchy is of central importance in complex systems. For noncomplex systems, there is a distinguishable ordering of scales of structure due to the hierarchy of physical forces and dynamical time scales. The various cases of nonseparability in the form of strong nonlinearity, constraints and feedback loops acting across spatial scales and the holism exhibited by such complex systems have proved fruitful for understanding more about how emergence works in complex phenomena. The interplay between parts and wholes in complex systems and their environments mediated by positive and negative feedback loops typically leads to the self-organization observed in such systems
Teacher Perceptions of their Ability to Teach in Inclusive Classrooms
The number of students with special needs participating in general education classrooms has increased dramatically in the past two decades. Despite this growth, colleges and universities across the United States still neglect to teach general education teacher candidates about inclusive practices for their respective content areas. Inclusive practices in education refer to those which seek to include students with special needs – mild or profound – in the general education classroom, curriculum, and experience. Inclusive practices are required by federal law. As a result, a master’s research project was developed wherein general education teachers at a south-central Pennsylvania middle school were surveyed. Findings include information regarding general education teachers’ attitudes about students with special needs, their perceived level of preparedness for teaching students with special needs, and their overall recommendations for teacher preparation programs to better prepare future general education teachers for inclusion
Renditions of a Changing Landscape in Lancaster County
The people and landscape of Lancaster County are changing. Population increases and economic success both result in the development and urbanization of a land once sought after for its fertile farm land; fields once abundant with corn and tobacco now find themselves stripped of nature’s splendor; barren plateaus at the doorsteps of shopping centers, malls, and housing developments. It is this nostalgia and this romantic notion of a “simpler” time that rallied the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists—Cezanne, Monet, Degas, Renoir, Manet, Van Gogh. This drove them to capture elements of the old towns of France before they turned to cities, to capture landscapes before they were scarred by the iron rail, and to capture nature before it was replaced by artifice. With this same desire to portray contemporary life, paintings were conducted to describe Lancaster County, placing visual emphasis on the mechanisms of societal change and ideological emphasis on the outcomes of change
Marietta Pennsylvania Historic District & The Susquehanna National Heritage Area Designation ArcGIS Story Map
In the spring semester 2019, Honors students enrolled in HON 201 Elizabethtown History: Campus and Community, conducted National Historic Preservation Act Section 106 Reviews documenting historic properties in the National Historic District of Marietta, PA. Kyle Cappucci, a student in the class, built on this research and expanded the scope of the project for SCARP. Cappucci utilized primary sources found in archival collections and historic collection libraries, conducted oral history interviews, worked with government documents, consulted with professional historians in academia, state, and federal agencies. The repositories for sources used in his research was a mixture of print and digital records in libraries, archives, museums, historic sites, and private collections. Cappucci worked carefully with representatives from the Marietta Restoration Associates, Inc., Marietta Historic District, Marietta Borough Council, Social Enterprise Institute at Elizabethtown College, and the consortium RiverStewards and Susquehanna Riverlands. Cappucci created a digital ArcGIS map to publish his research findings. The Marietta Historic District is part of the Susquehanna Pennsylvania Heritage Area. The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources administers twelve Heritage Areas. Heritage PA is a multi-region asset-based economic development program rooted in Pennsylvania’s natural, cultural, and industrial history. Heritage Areas create cross-sector partnerships enhancing a region’s sense of place and strengthens regional economies. These partnerships create livable communities along the Susquehanna River attracting private investment and housing the products and places driving Pennsylvania’s tourism industry. Cappucci’s research about the historical significance of Marietta is contributing to the work of Susquehanna Heritage. This nonprofit organization collaborates with local, state, and national partners advancing the vision for the Susquehanna Riverlands as a national destination. A National Heritage Area designation will give the state Susquehanna Heritage Area access to federal funding and assistance from the National Park Service

Creating a Multiplication Pedagogical Toolkit for Upper Elementary Mathematics Educators
All elementary school students can be described as developing learners, each with unique learning styles. The wide variety of ways that students learn presents upper elementary school educators with both opportunities and challenges related to how they should best teach multiplication to their students. Students often have difficulties conceptualizing and engaging with multiplication and thus may benefit from having multiple different strategies to choose from to support their learning of multiplication. When teachers provide students with various ways of learning multiplication, they recognize that not all students learn the same way and students should have options in how they learn. Some students may learn best from more traditional strategies, such as the use of algorithms, while some may benefit more from nontraditional strategies, such as the use of manipulatives as models. Teachers must aim to provide accessible learning opportunities for all students so that each student can choose the strategy/strategies that are the most beneficial for them. If all students are subjected to a singular approach, some students will learn, while others may struggle. In considering this, I planned and conducted a research project that investigated the various approaches to mathematics instruction, particularly multiplication, with the goal of compiling a toolkit of diverse strategies for teaching multiplication. In doing so, my research questions are as follows. Research Questions: 1. What strategies do mathematics educators employ to teach multiplication to their students? 2. How can a toolkit of strategies offer a set of resources for upper elementary school mathematics educators in meeting the diverse learning needs of students who are struggling to understand multiplication
Insulin/lGF-1 Signaling Receptor HTK7 Expression in Aging and Non-Aging Hydr.q, oligactis
The freshwater cnidarians of the genus Hydra are a potential system for the study of aging. Hydra vulgaris shows negligible senescence. Hydra oligactis, on the other hand, shows rapid aging after it has been induced to sexually reproduce. Understanding the onset of aging in H. oligactis may provide insights relevant to aging and the accompanying diseases in humans. One attractive pathway for study is the insulin/IGF-1 signaling (ISS) pathway, a conserved pathway which affects lifespan in both invertebrate and vertebrate model organisms. In H. vulgaris, activation of the ISS pathway is thought to reduce activities of the transcription factor FoxO and induce differentiation of stem cells. The purpose of this experiment was to determine whether expression of the insulin-like peptide receptor HTK7 gene changes in H. oligactis once aging is induced. It was expected that HTK7 would be expressed in stem cells in aging H. oligactis, causing the pre-mature differentiation of these cells, and contributing to the onset of aging. Expression of HTK7 was analyzed using whole-mount RNA in situ hybridization. H. oligactis showed highest HTK7 expression in epithelial cells in regions where differentiation takes place: at the base of the tentacles and adjacent to the basal disk. When analyzing the foot region of the polyps, it was seen that the foot became larger in aging H. oligactis. This phenotype mimicked ones previously seen in FoxO-deficient H. vulgaris, indicating that HTK7 could be pre-maturely downregulating FoxO in the foot region and contributing to the onset of aging
Evaluation of Fecal Matter Preservation Methods and their Effect on Composition of Microbiota Assessed through DNA Sequencing and Analysis
Fecal Matter Transplants (FMT) are an effective yet underutilized treatment for potentially life-threatening Clostridium difficile infections. Following antibiotic treatment, an imbalance between the types of colonic microbiota naturally present in a person’s gut may occur, allowing the opportunistic pathogenic bacterium C. difficile to proliferate and reach virulent levels. Despite a 90% success rate, and patient reports of immediate improvement, FMTs are approved only as a last resort due to strict US Food and Drug Administration restrictions, which label them as “experimental”. This study aimed to compare microbial preservation methods to determine the method with the least detrimental effect on the composition of stool microbes. Fecal matter samples, collected from dogs, were homogenized with either sterile deionized water or 0.85% NaCl. The homogenized mixtures were then partitioned for immediate DNA extraction or for preservation with or without 25% glycerol prior to -80°C storage. DNA extraction was also performed on samples partitioned and stored at -80°C after 3 weeks and after 10 months of storage. All extracted DNA was then subjected to PCR amplification and sequenced. A Phred score was used to assess quality of DNA sequencing. Based on alpha and beta diversity analysis, the water and glycerol treatment resulted in the least amount of change in taxonomic composition and proportions when compared to the sample prior to preservation. Information gained from this study could be used to further improve FMTs and help fuel FMT related research in hopes of attenuating FDA restrictions
