Turkey-west relations: The politics of intra-alliance opposition
No full textThis timely book fills an important gap in the literature of international relations, providing a thorough, up-to-date, empirically supported, and theoretically grounded analysis of how and why Turkish foreign policy has changed in recent years vis-à-vis the West. Presenting one of the first balancing studies that employs elite interviews as data, Turkey-West Relations develops a framework of intra-alliance opposition, classifying the tools of statecraft into three categories - boundary testing, boundary challenging, and boundary breaking. Geriatric Assessment in a Primary Care Environment: A Standardized Patient Case Activity for Interprofessional Students
No full textIntroduction: Given the aging population and the benefits of comprehensive geriatric assessment to this subset of patients, an interprofessional education training approach may be advantageous for learners from a number of different health professions. Methods: Through intercollegiate collaborations involving seven different colleges, an interprofessional simulation using standardized patients was developed and instituted for learners in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, dental hygiene, and dietitian programs. Herein, we describe the design of the simulation experience and examine its impact on students, as assessed primarily via written reflective comments provided via exit slips at the conclusion of the activity. Results: Of the 340 student participants, 83% submitted exit slips describing something gained from the interprofessional session that would not have occurred if students had completed the activity with only students from their own discipline. Three key themes were identified from these reflections: new understanding of roles and responsibilities of other disciplines, new knowledge or skills pertaining to geriatric assessments, and the value of teamwork. Discussion: Reflective comments from students regarding the interprofessional experience are evidence of this initiative\u27s benefits, which include increasing knowledge of geriatric medical and allied health-provided care and attainment of interprofessional competencies
The Western Balkans in the transatlantic security context: Where do we go from here?
No full textThe Western Balkans has traditionally held vital geostrategic importance for European and transatlantic security. Ever since the 1990s, the EU and the NATO have maintained an active presence in the region, and pursued goals of stability and peace. Since the 2000s, the Euro-Atlantic actors have sought an eventual integration of the countries in the region into transatlantic structures. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the contemporary situation in the Western Balkans, examining the regional countries’ prospects for Euro-Atlantic integration and the implications of the latest developments for transatlantic security. It makes the argument that NATO accession acts as a prelude to eventual EU accession, ensuring that the countries stay the course of engaging in reforms and contributing to Euro-Atlantic security while confirming their commitment to democracy
The inquiring eye: Illustration and the production of knowledge
No full textFrom the early modern period, polymath artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Robert Hooke, Maria Sibylla Merian, Ernst Haeckel, and Ramón y Cajal employed observational drawing as an instrument of knowledge. By inventing the visual conventions of the cross-section, cutaway, overlay, transparent and exploded views, scientific illustrators advanced the study of natural phenomena, the physical sciences, and the design of technology. With few exceptions, however, their contributions to both the history of art and the history of science were neglected. Building on William Ivins, Jr.‘s insight that the development of scientific communities required the dissemination of “exactly repeatable pictorial statements,” this chapter traces the historical role of illustration as a method of graphically representing and communicating research in emergent knowledge domains. Theories of the epistemology of images and debates about the ontological and phenomenological status of scientific illustration from antiquity to the present are reviewed
A Review of Secure and Privacy-Preserving Medical Data Sharing
No full textIn the digital healthcare era, it is of the utmost importance to harness medical information scattered across healthcare institutions to support in-depth data analysis and achieve personalized healthcare. However, the cyberinfrastructure boundaries of healthcare organizations and privacy leakage threats place obstacles on the sharing of medical records. Blockchain, as a public ledger characterized by its transparency, tamper-evidence, trustlessness, and decentralization, can help build a secure medical data exchange network. This paper surveys the state-of-the-art schemes on secure and privacy-preserving medical data sharing of the past decade with a focus on blockchain-based approaches. We classify them into permissionlessblockchain-based approaches and permissioned blockchain-based approaches and analyze their advantagesand disadvantages. We also discuss potential research topics on blockchain-based medical data sharing

SEL Building Blocks to Transition Students with ASD
Get PDFThis paper analyzes the importance of social emotional curriculums in a general education and special education setting. The research includes descriptions of various social-emotional learning curriculums specifically designed for general education students, and descriptions of curriculums designed for students with ASD. The research compares the scope and sequence of the skills integrated in the curriculums. When investigating the various curriculums, the skills did not correlate with the necessary skills needed to help students with ASD transition from grade to grade and into postsecondary education or career. In order to address this gap in available resources for students with ASD, the project also includes the design of The SEL Building Blocks to Transition Students with ASD which integrates the components of ASD as identified by the DSM-V. The curriculum includes fifteen lessons focusing on skills emphasizing communication, interactions, behaviors, and emotions. The curriculum features a read aloud story book component with every lesson and includes evidence-based strategies for teaching SEL and students with ASD. The skills taught in the self-created lesson help students develop skills to benefit them when transition to postsecondary education or career

Emotional Intelligence and Disordered Eating: Efficacy of Analysis Via Ecological Momentary Assessment
Get PDFThe proposed presentation will provide background information on and preliminary baseline data from an ongoing pilot study of the use of EMA to assess the association between emotional intelligence and disordered eating. Participants will complete baseline surveys inquiring about disordered eating behaviors, emotional intelligence, and daily stressors, and receive text message prompts over two weeks asking about eating behaviors, stressors, and emotional intelligence. The study will ultimately address the following questions: does emotional intelligence predict occurrences of disordered eating symptoms and other eating behaviors over a subsequent two-week period and is ecological momentary assessment technology a feasible means of assessing day-to-day fluctuations in the presentation of disordered eating symptoms
