    Biological Survey of Elizabethtown College

    The campus of Elizabethtown College possesses various ecosystems that frequently are overlooked by the student body and community. These ecosystems include forests, meadows, wetlands, streams, and ponds and provide habitat for a variety of plants and animals. We are advocating for the college to recognize these campus areas as the “Natural Lands of Elizabethtown College.” The goal of our project was to determine what species inhabit these natural lands. Our primary taxonomic focus was on birds. We determined the absence and presence of bird species common to the eastern United States. About three times a week for three weeks in late May and early June of 2019, we birded in seven locations for 15-minute intervals. These locations included meadow, wooded, pond, and residential ecosystems. We determined the probabilities of occupancy and detection of birds within these ecosystems. In addition to birds, we also surveyed for salamanders and aquatic macroinvertebrates in streams on campus. We also mapped patches of milkweed on campus in anticipation of future research on monarch butterflies. These data on various taxonomic groups are a first step to understanding the biodiversity of the “Natural Lands.” The Natural Lands of Elizabethtown College will demonstrate our college’s commitment to preserving biodiversity and providing opportunities for the educational, physical, and mental well-being of students by creating connections with nature

    Women in Radio: A (Her)Story

    Since the 1920s, women have been an integral part of the radio industry both as originators and as consumers, yet they have experienced near exclusion from histories and analyses on the subject. This thesis project explores the intersection of gender, sound and history through a cultural and historical analysis of female voices in American radio. The analysis includes an examination of the history of silencing women in the public sphere, the on-going conversation surrounding the suitability of female voices for broadcast and modern critiques of female voices. As more women\u27s voices are heard on the radio, the ways gender hierarchies are heard and interpreted in sound environments change. This research seeks to address the following question: has modern radio programming helped to rework the gendered dimensions of the public and private space, and shape the perception of the female voice in the public sphere? The purpose of this thesis project is to explore the ways in which power and agency may be expressed by women in a traditionally gendered soundscape to breakdown gender biases in the radio industry. Women in radio are rarely given the platform to respond to the critiques and complaints made about their voices or to share their thoughts on the ideal “radio voice”. To reclaim this conversation, interviews were conducted with female radio hosts and announcers to help illustrate their experiences and allow them to share their own narratives

    Development of pH Responsive Nanoparticles for Integration into a Lateral Flow Assay for Heavy Metal Detection

    Heavy metal contamination is one of the main issues preventing people from accessing drinkable water in developing countries. Current methods of metal detection require a highly trained user and do not allow for quick and inexpensive testing in low-resource regions. This project seeks to integrate metal sensitive dyemodified polymer nanoparticles into a lateral flow assay design to develop a lowcost water quality test. Specifically, a control nanoparticle was developed using a pH-sensitive fluorescein dye derivative. The dye was covalently bound to poly(acrylic acid) by an amide linkage, and nanoparticles were formed by a microemulsion technique. The pH response of various nanoparticles was characterized by fluorescence and absorption spectroscopy, and as expected, the signal intensity increased with basicity. This fluorescein-poly(acrylic acid) nanoparticle will be used to indicate that a lateral flow test result is valid

    Mindset in Math Class: How Math Teachers Can Promote Future Success

    The present study examines the recently developing literature around mindset in an educational setting. Theorists believe that how we think impacts how we approach situations. How individuals think about these situations can be defined as a fixed or growth mindset. The discussion includes a novel suggestion for a math classroom intervention involving asking students to journal about the intersection of their interests with mathematical concepts and outlines the results from a study testing this intervention in a local high school. The results show that this intervention may have increased mindset pertaining to general intelligence. A discussion of limitations due to small sample sizes and limited timing is also included

    Interventions Used Among School-Based Occupational Therapy Practitioners to Promote Student Performance

    Occupational therapy practitioners working in the school setting play a role in contributing to student’s lives. Through many interventions, these practitioners contribute to promoting student performance within the academic setting. Yet, there is more research to be done related to the overall impact school-based interventions have on performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between role perceptions of school-based occupational therapy, interventions implemented, and the impact on student performance. A qualitative approach guided this study. Participants currently employed through a local, rural school district participated in this research by completing an online survey. A total of five occupational therapy practitioners provided informative data used for analysis. Four were Registered Occupational Therapists (OTR) and one was a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA). The survey responses were analyzed for common themes that existed among the questions and throughout the data. Four themes emerged from the data. First, the role of the student in the academic setting is to learn. Second, the role of the occupational therapy practitioner in school-based practice is to help, assist, and provide support for students to achieve maximum ability and independence about their school learning. Third, intervention activities should address underlying deficits that compromise handwriting and other fine motor tasks. Fourth, focusing on underlying deficit skills improves student academic participation. These findings have implications for current occupational therapy practice, as well as future research
