    Examining Media Bias in United States Online, Print News Coverage of the Venezuelan Crisis

    This thesis examines media regarding the Venezuelan crisis bias in online, United Statesbased, print journalism. Venezuela is a nation that has been in crisis for most of the last decade but has received sparse coverage from United States news media sources. Recently, the nation’s National Assembly leader, Juan Guaidó, declared himself interim president after years of alleged corruption and election fraud regarding President Nicolás Maduro. Guaidó’s proclamation resulted in various governments in Latin America and around the world speaking out in support of the self-declared interim president. The United States was one such nation, thus launching the Venezuelan crisis into the mainstream media in the United States. Studying media bias, especially with consideration for that nation’s involvement in the discussed topic, allows for further insight into media bias as a whole and the impact of foreign policy on this bias. This media bias is studied through quantitative results and qualitative analysis of those results. Findings from this study reveal overarching themes related to the United States direct involvement in the Venezuelan crisis, as well as the United States indirect involvement in Venezuelan affairs leading up to and during the ongoing crisis. Results of this study did not indicate that articles were biased overall, though there was a significant difference in the amount of bias between the types of articles. Additionally, articles were far more likely to support Juan Guaidó than Nicolás Maduro

    Ripple: An efficient runtime reconfigurable P4 data plane for multicore systems

    The P4 language was originally proposed as a means of providing programmable network data plane functions with the potential to implement, understand, and interpret custom protocols. However, the recompilation process and the re-instantiation of network functions on a target device introduces measurable downtime for network services. In this work, we present Ripple, an efficient, runtime reconfigurable P4 engine on multicore systems to eliminate the recompilation process. The Ripple framework adopts the \u27generic and static\u27 philosophy, and uses a highly optimized universal binary executable to avoid the lengthy recompilation and reconfiguration process, while supporting packet processing at line rates. We leverage advanced I/O and vectorization techniques to take advantage of packet level parallelism and processor architectural features, thus significantly improve the performance of P4 data plane at runtime. Our in-depth evaluation on multicore architecture shows that Ripple reaches comparable throughput with one of the state-of-art frameworks that requires recompilation and reconfiguration

    Effects of research and internship experiences on engineering task selfefficacy on engineering students through an intersectional lens

    High-impact academic experiences, particularly research and internship experiences, have positive impacts for engineering students on engineering task self-efficacy (ETSE), a measure of students\u27 perception of their ability to perform technical engineering tasks. However, underrepresented racial/ethnic minority students (URM) and women in engineering are found to have relatively lower self-perceptions across several academic and professional self-efficacy measures. Previous studies examined the impact of research and internship experiences on ETSE for students categorized by gender and URM status separately. The current study explores the impact of these experiences on ETSE for the intersection between these two identity categories. This study found that both non-URM and URM women that participated in research and internship experiences had lower ETSE scores than non-URM and URM men, respectively. However, URM women that participated in both research and internship experiences had a statistically similar ETSE score to non-URM men that had not participated in either. This study uses multiple linear regression to measure the association between engineering internships and student\u27s reported ETSE (effects of participating in research were not found to be significant across identities). Preliminary findings indicate that differences in ETSE between internship participants and non-participants are highest for URM women when compared to their counterparts. Consistent with the literature, this research finds that there is a greater positive effect in ETSE scores, as a result of participation in both research and internship experiences, for URM women than their majority counterparts. These preliminary results provide a foundation for further studies to causally investigate the link between academic experiences and self-efficacy levels for students who are underrepresented in engineering programs. Future implications of this work include the creation of targeted intervention efforts to increase support for all URM students\u27 access and participation in research and internship experiences. Additionally, this work seeks to challenge the bias towards monolithic interpretations of women and URM engineering students as separate categories and encourage intersectional perspectives when analyzing data to produce more inclusive results

    The 1970s produced a pattern of international politics in South America that was much more conflictual and troublesome than the current essentially cooperative tone. There were intermittent tensions between leftist and rightist regimes, several active border disputes, and ongoing rivalries between Argentina and Brazil during the period of nationalistic Peronist governments in Buenos Aires and beyond. The foreign policy results of the Falklands War for Argentina were definitely not, as some had initially feared, of a sort to cause brash vengefulness or a choice for the nuclear option to try once again to prove superior status, prestige, and regional leadership. As a group, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay have traditionally been regarded either as buffer states or as zones of competition between Argentina and Brazil. Southern Cone economies over the longer haul have been weaker and more sluggish than Brazil’s, even though the area is the most developed region of Latin America

    Comparison of steady-state and transient thermo-mechanical responses of unprotected aluminum columns at elevated temperatures

    In modern construction, aluminum is often used as a structural material due to its relatively high strength-to-weight ratio, resistance to corrosion, and architecturally pleasing finish. For instance, aluminum has been an important component for the development of skyscrapers atriums and exterior facades, as aluminum structures can weigh up to sixty percent less than similar steel structures with comparable strength. However, the thermo-mechanical behavior of aluminum makes design against building fires challenging, mainly because aluminum has a low melting point, and experimental data and analysis-based models for fire design are limited. Generally, steady-state and transient tests are used to determine material properties at high temperatures. In a steady-state test, a tensile specimen is heated up to a target temperature, and then subjected to axial load under constant temperature. Alternatively, a transient tensile test is completed by applying static axial load to the specimen, and then gradually heating the material to realistically simulate fire conditions. Results from steady-state tests are easier to obtain and, therefore, more commonly used in computational models. This project investigates the accuracy of numerical results obtained through “transient” models that adopt steady-state mechanical properties to study the effects of fire on aluminum structures. Thin-walled columns were analyzed using nonlinear finite element models with mechanical properties from steady-state and transient tests. Results from Abaqus collapse analyses are used to compare the load-carrying capacities and critical temperatures of slender and non-slender hollow members. Parametric studies were completed to characterize the impact of member slenderness and geometric imperfections on the stability of hollow aluminum columns at elevated temperatures

    The correlation of a novel BIN1 isoform and the expression of SV40 T antigen in human diploid fibroblasts

    The BIN1 gene product, Amphiphysin 2, has been shown to act as a tumor suppressor (Prokic, et al., 2014) working to stop uncontrolled cell growth. It accomplishes this by several mechanisms most notably the MYC-dependent pathway (Prokic, et al., 2014). BIN1 contains several protein domains: BIN-amphiphysin/Rvs (N-BAR), phosphoinositide (PI), clathrin and AP2 (CLAP), Mycbinding domain (MBD), and Src homology 3(SH3). In non-malignant cells normal levels of BIN1 can activate Programed Cell Death, and it can inhibit excessive growth by binding to N-Myc and blocking its ability to activate the cell cycle genes. (Prokic, 2014). However in many cancers, BIN1 is deleted, or alternatively spliced to to knock out these protective functions. Alternative splicing to include exon 12A in BIN1 has been found in several tumors and inclusion of this exon is thought to disable the BIN1 protein from binding to Myc. Our lab has been investigating the cellular mechanisms of transformation by the simian virus 40 (SV40) large T-antigen and we hypothesized that this oncoprotein would cause the production of the Bin1+12A isoform in human diploid fibroblast (HDF). Our preliminary results have detected a new RNA transcript in HDF cells expressing T antigen (HDF+T) that has been spliced to remove exons 12-18. We are currently confirming if this transcript creates a stable protein by Western blot analysis and if sufficient levels of BIN1 are detected then immunofluorescence will determine the cellular location. This data will help elucidate the role of BIN1 in tumor progression
