Toward secure, privacy-preserving, and interoperable medical data sharing via blockchain
In the era of cloud computing and big data analysis, how to efficiently share and utilize medical information scattered across various care providers has become a critical problem. This paper proposes a new framework for sharing medical data in a secure and privacy-preserving way. This framework holistically integrates multi-Authority attribute based encryption, blockchain and smart contract, as well as software defined networking to define and enforce sharing policies. Specifically in our framework, patients\u27 medical records are encrypted and stored in hospital databases, where strict access controls are enforced with attribute based encryption coupled with privacy level classification. Our framework leverages blockchain technology to connect scattered private databases from participating hospitals for efficient and secure data provision, smart contracts to enable the business logic of clinical data usage, and software defined networking to revoke sharing privileges. The performance evaluation of our prototype demonstrates that the associated computation costs are reasonable in practice
Synthesis and RNA-Binding Properties of Extended Nucleobases for Triplex-Forming Peptide Nucleic Acids
Triple-helix formation, using Hoogsteen hydrogen bonding of triplex-forming oligonucleotides, represents an attractive method for sequence-specific recognition of double-stranded nucleic acids. However, practical applications using triple-helix-forming oligonucleotides and their analogues are limited to long homopurine sequences. The key problem for recognition of pyrimidines is that they present only one hydrogen-bond acceptor or donor group in the major groove. Herein, we report our first attempt to overcome this problem by using peptide nucleic acids (PNAs) modified with extended nucleobases that form three hydrogen bonds along the entire Hoogsteen edge of the Watson-Crick base pair. New nucleobase triples (five) were designed, and their hydrogen bonding feasibility was confirmed by ab initio calculations. PNA monomers carrying the modified nucleobases were synthesized and incorporated in short model PNA sequences. Isothermal titration calorimetry showed that these nucleobases had a modest binding affinity for their double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) targets. Finally, molecular modeling of the modified triples in PNA-dsRNA helix suggested that the modest binding affinity was caused by subtle structural deviations from ideal hydrogen-bonding arrangements or disrupted π-stacking of the extended nucleobase scaffolds

Impact of student mindfulness facets on engineering education outcomes: An initial exploration
Mindfulness-based practices and interventions are increasingly recognized for their potential to positively affect college students\u27 psychological health, wellbeing, and academic success. While research on mindfulness in the context of engineering education is beginning to emerge, many concepts remain poorly understood, including the association between engineering students\u27 mindfulness and academic functioning. Additionally, prior research has not specifically considered and tested interventions designed to increase the trait mindfulness of engineering students. In this paper, we examine these questions through two studies: the first, a survey study examining the association between trait mindfulness and relevant educational outcomes in 73 engineering and non-engineering students; the second, a pilot four-week mindfulness-based stress reduction intervention for 21 engineering students. Results indicated that engineering students\u27 grades on a targeted task relevant to ABET outcomes were significantly, positively related to their self-reported preference for challenging information and experiences (r = .41, p \u3c .01) and their ability to be mindfully nonreactive (r = .38, p = .01). Compared to non-engineering students, engineering students reported a significantly higher level of nonjudgmental mindful awareness (t (69) = 3.02, p \u3c.01) and openness to new experiences (t (70) = 3.42, p \u3c .01). Participating in a four-week mindfulness intervention significantly increased engineering students\u27 trait mindfulness (t(21) = -2.90, p = .01), engagement in mindfulness outside of sessions (t(20) = -4.36, p \u3c.01), and intellectual curiosity and exploration (t(21) = -.48, p \u3c.01). These results lend support to the feasibility of mindfulness-based interventions in engineering education and advance previous literature. The discussion provides recommendations for the implementation of mindfulness-based interventions in engineering education based on these results and qualitative student feedback, as well as recommendation for continued research in this domain

Did You See That? : An Exploration of Product Placement in Theatre
Previous research on product placement demonstrates a connection between the placement and brand recall, brand attitude, and intent to purchase. Furthermore, this research demonstrates distinct differences in outcomes based upon the prominence of the product. The current study uses an experimental method to expand on this previous research by exploring product placement effects in a live performance setting. Results demonstrate significance in the relationship between brand recall and product congruency, recall and the interaction effect, and recall and perception of character. Future research should seek to expand this line of inquiry by exploring the connection between product placement perception and theatre engagement, the type of genre of the production the product is placed in, and how product placement differs across audience segments
