Monitoring Public Sentiment of NFL Draft Picks via Machine Learning Techniques
Sentiment analysis is a topic in natural language processing that seeks to automatically extract positive and negative polarity from text data. Its applications are diverse, ranging from marketing and sales to forum moderation to gauging public opinion. One particularly interesting application area is found in professional sports: fans share a huge volume of opinions, predictions, and reactions online that can be used to monitor public opinion on specific teams, coaches, and players. This paper explores the application of machine learning based sentiment analysis on a hand-labeled social media dataset focused on reacting to National Football League draft picks. The resulting model, called DraftSense, provides information that can be used for future analysis, including attitude towards drafted players, comparison between fan reactions and on-field performance, and comparison between drafted players based on the language used to describe them. Additionally, a labeled dataset for sentiment analysis on professional football will be created for further use
Effects of Adaptive Dance on Children: Dance Teachers’ Perspectives
Dance is an art, sport, and passion able to be enjoyed and benefited by all ages. The benefits include increased motor, cognitive, emotional, and social skills, and more (Demers, Thomas, Wittich, McKinley, 2015). This study gathered initial research regarding the effects of dance on children with disabilities as well as children of typical development and the aging population. The researcher conducted interviewed teachers of adaptive dance programs regarding their perspectives on the benefits, challenges, goals, and the impact of an occupational therapy career on teaching, as applicable. Teachers were interviewed via video or phone call and audio transcriptions were used to analyze data through extracting themes for each question. The study aligned with previous research in establishing benefits such as confidence, motor skills, and cognitive skills such as memory and sequencing. Challenges found included acquiring enough students and finances as well as optimizing participation from a diverse range of students. The goals ranged from more general ones about having fun and building confidence, to more specifically working on physical and social skills. Only one participant was also an occupational therapist and spoke to the unconscious integration of her expertise influencing her teaching
Elementary School Teacher\u27s Perception of Occupational Therapy
Low literacy levels in childhood cause detrimental, lifelong effects. Intervention services provided to struggling readers are currently limited. A preliminary study was conducted following a mixed methods approach to explore teacher perception of the benefits of occupational therapy intervention in the Response to Intervention model for reading delays.
Research questions were as follows: 1. To the teacher’s knowledge, are occupational therapy services currently available to students in the Response to Intervention model? 2. Do teachers perceive occupational therapy intervention within the Response to Intervention model beneficial for reading delays?
Data was collected via an electronic survey. Sixty-seven participant responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results suggest a general lack of knowledge and familiarity with occupational therapy services available and the benefits of occupational therapy interventions. However, regardless of the lack of familiarity with occupational therapy services, participant responses indicate a positive perception of the benefits of occupational therapy as an intervention for reading delays within the Response to Intervention model
Listeria monocytogenes at the human–wildlife interface: black bears (Ursus americanus) as potential vehicles for Listeria
Listeria monocytogenes is the causative agent of the foodborne illness listeriosis, which can result in severe symptoms and death in susceptible humans and other animals. L. monocytogenes is ubiquitous in the environment and isolates from food and food processing, and clinical sources have been extensively characterized. However, limited information is available on L. monocytogenes from wildlife, especially from urban or suburban settings. As urban and suburban areas are expanding worldwide, humans are increasingly encroaching into wildlife habitats, enhancing the frequency of human–wildlife contacts and associated pathogen transfer events. We investigated the prevalence and characteristics of L. monocytogenes in 231 wild black bear capture events between 2014 and 2017 in urban and suburban sites in North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia and United States, with samples derived from 183 different bears. Of the 231 captures, 105 (45%) yielded L. monocytogenes either alone or together with other Listeria. Analysis of 501 samples, primarily faeces, rectal and nasal swabs for Listeria spp., yielded 777 isolates, of which 537 (70%) were L. monocytogenes. Most L. monocytogenes isolates exhibited serotypes commonly associated with human disease: serotype 1/2a or 3a (57%), followed by the serotype 4b complex (33%). Interestingly, approximately 50% of the serotype 4b isolates had the IVb-v1 profile, associated with emerging clones of L. monocytogenes. Thus, black bears may serve as novel vehicles for L. monocytogenes, including potentially emerging clones. Our results have significant public health implications as they suggest that the ursine host may preferentially select for L. monocytogenes of clinically relevant lineages over the diverse listerial populations in the environment. These findings also help to elucidate the ecology of L. monocytogenes and highlight the public health significance of the human–wildlife interface
A comparison and classification of grading approaches used in engineering education
Grades are intended to communicate achievement associated with a learning experience. Engineering educators in higher education often default to a particular grading approach without considering how the approach impacts student achievement. This work proposes a model for comparing and classifying commonly used grading systems in engineering higher education. Examples from the engineering education literature revealed five general categories of grading: 1) normative, score-based grading, 2) summative grading, 3) standards-based grading, 4) mastery-based grading, and 5) adaptive grading. (Note: variations in naming conventions were observed.) Each grading system was examined to determine key characteristics of the system and how student performance was ultimately assessed. A continuum of grading approaches was created after discovering that each system ranged in its intention to select and/or develop talent. The most widely adopted approaches to grading in engineering higher education, norm-based grading, were classified using purely selective processes (e.g., letter grades). Alternative, learning outcomes-based grading approaches differentiate themselves by the level in which they attempt to develop talent. This was determined by examining differences in how the grading system impacted sequencing of content, course pace, number of attempts to demonstrate achievement, scale and weight of performance, feedback provided, and basis for a final grade. The resulting continuum provides a tool for engineering educators to compare and discuss grading approaches in order to select an appropriate system for their course or program. Informed decisions on grading can have a critical impact in student retention and program improvement

Through a presented case scenario, this article describes the assessment and management of behaviors associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the pediatric population, with mnemonics as a memory tool. Although students present mainly to the school nurses\u27 office with physical complaints, there are many mental health concerns in the school-age population with emotional and physical consequences, particularly among students with ASD. Typically considered a developmental disorder, ASD affects communication and behavior with a wide range of symptoms that can vary in severity from person to person. It is important to understand the presentation and management of common pediatric mental health issues at school to be on the front line of your students\u27 health
Lyrical Content of Contemporary Popular Music (1999-2018) and the Role of Healthcare Providers in Media Education of Children and Adolescents
Music can affect the behavior and emotion of children and adolescents. We conducted a content and trend analysis of Billboard\u27s top 10 songs, 1999-2018, with particular attention to adult and positive themes. There was a total of 3633 total references, 3298 (90.8%) adult themes, and 335 (9.2%) positive themes. The most common adult themes were sexually suggestive lyrics (32.2%), sexually suggestive dancing (15.6%), use of swear words (13.7%), alcohol use (4.7%), and use of guns/deadly weapons (4.7%). The most common positive theme was empowerment (62.3%). There were greater references per minute for adult themes (4.8 vs. 3.7 references per minute) and positive themes (0.6 vs. 0.3 references per minute) in the 2009-2018 study period as compared with the 1999-2008 study period. We encourage pediatric healthcare providers to be active participants in the promotion of media education, and we encourage parents to be mindful of the level of media exposure
