A roadmap for precision medicine research recruitment: Empirical assessment of the public\u27s willingness to participate
No full textAim: Precision medicine research recruitment poses challenges. To better understand factors impacting recruitment, this study assessed hypothetical willingness, public opinions of and familiarity with precision medicine research. Materials & methods: Adult attendees (n = 942) at the 2017 Minnesota State Fair completed an electronic survey. Results: Few respondents had heard of ‘precision medicine\u27 (18%), and familiarity came mostly from media (43%). Fifty-six percent expressed hypothetical willingness to participate in precision medicine research. Significant predictors of willingness were: comfort with unconditional research; perceiving precision medicine research as beneficial, trustworthy and confidential; having a graduate degree; comfort with self- but not family-participation; and familiarity with precision/personalized medicine. Conclusion: This study identified predictors of hypothetical willingness to participate in precision medicine research. Alternative recruitment strategies are needed
A Peace Education-Based Social Studies Curriculum for Fourth Grade
Get PDFResearch suggests that teaching social-emotional competencies through peace education, along with academic material, can create positive attitudes and behaviors in students and foster a positive school climate. Further, through curricula that employ peace education practices, students obtain skills, knowledge, and attitudes that prepare them for college, career, and civic duty. The focus of this project is the development of a fourth-grade curriculum that integrates social studies and social-emotional skill building, while aligning to the district’s English Language Arts standards. Lessons and project-based materials are utilized to instruct students throughout the curriculum by immersing them in an authentic and engaging learning environment with the goal of increasing students’ social emotional skills and peace education competencies. The curriculum’s effectiveness will be measured through formative and summative assessment and student completion of pre- and post-surveys that measure student gains in social awareness, responsible decision making, and environmental stewardship in the context of the content covered and within their own lives
Seeing Colors: The Impact of Color Priming on Brand Perception
Get PDFPrevious research has examined the role that color plays in various contexts. This research has primarily examined three aspects of color: hue (the primary reflected wavelength or the color itself), saturation (the dominance of hue in a color or the pureness of a color), and value (the brightness of the color). The current study seeks to apply the concept of priming to the study of the effects of color. Priming is defined as the psychological technique in which one stimulus influences a person’s response to a subsequent stimulus. In this study, priming is utilized in the form of varying color saturation levels to alter attitudes, purchase intentions, and value perceptions of several brands. An experimental method was designed to test the difference between pretest and posttest responses from participants regarding their attitudes, purchase intentions, and value perceptions of these brands. This method involved a manipulation of color saturation to ascertain the role that priming plays in magnifying or reducing color effects. Ultimately, the results indicated partial support for the study’s three hypotheses, demonstrating to a degree that increased saturation levels can influence brand attitude measures, likelihood to purchase measures, and perceived value measures

Get PDFYayoi Kusama is a world-renowned multidisciplinary artist from Nagano Japan. Her signature mirror rooms have flooded social media websites like Instagram and Twitter. Her strong personal brand and iconic fashion sense has helped solidify her presence as a pop cultural icon throughout the world. She has also played a role in several social movements in America and abroad. Currently, she is arguably the most popular and well-known living female artist in the world. Her captivating work is distinctive due to its trademark forms, hues, silhouettes and patterns. While her work is immediately recognizable, much of its meaning remains enigmatic. For example, in the United States where Japanese is not commonly spoken, language accessibility often limits communicative efficacy especially within fast-faced popular culture. However, there is also the intricate nature of mental illness that makes discussion of Kusama’s artwork even more complex. Regarding evocative artwork, much of an artist’s memories, desires, and fears allow for the manifestation of intimately unique pieces. Kusama’s work encapsulates the often messy, disjointed and oppressed emotions in her life, but she does so in a way that invites others to engage as well. By looking at her work and the cultures that surrounded her life experiences, one can gain a slightly more coherent understanding of the role art plays in both portraying and shaping our beliefs. One can also see how the popular forms of Kusama’s artwork today are the potent culmination of her lived experiences
Effects of the Herbicide Atrazine on Members of the Freshwater Genus Hydra
Get PDFAtrazine is a commercially available herbicide with known effects on the hormone levels in frogs and several other organisms. This effect has not been significantly studied in invertebrates, even though observing invertebrate levels represent a very common assay the health of a freshwater ecosystem. To study the effects of atrazine in invertebrates, hydra were subjected to environmental (10 μg/L) and high (400 μg/L) concentrations of atrazine and observed for changes in fertility and reproduction over a period of four weeks. No significant changes in fertility or reproduction were found at high concentrations, and environmental concentration testing is currently in progress, Hydra bearing a symbiosis with chlorella algae demonstrated a significant loss of algae in their cells at high concentrations, and environmental concentration testing is currently in progress. The findings currently indicate that atrazine does not have immediate adverse effects on hydra, although atrazine is dangerous to the plant life that the hydra may interact with
