    Why College Students Drift Left: The Stability of Political Identity and Relative Malleability of Issue Positions among College Students

    In considering the liberalizing effect of college on students\u27 political values, we argue that political identities - in the form of self-identified ideology or partisanship - are components of social identity and are resistant to change. Using data from the Higher Education Research Institute\u27s student surveys, we show that what movement in identity does occur is mostly a regression to the mean effect. On several issue positions, however, students move in a more uniform leftward direction. We find that liberal drift on issues is most common among students majoring in the arts and humanities. Self-reported ideology does drift left at liberal arts colleges, but this is explained by a peer effect: students at liberal arts colleges drift more to the left because they have more liberal peers. The results have implications for future research on college student political development, suggesting that attitudinal change can be more easily identified by examining shifts in policy preferences rather than changes in political identity

    ChainSDI: A Software-Defined Infrastructure for Regulation-Compliant Home-Based Healthcare Services Secured by Blockchains

    Healthcare networking and computing infrastructure is rapidly changing from closed environments to open environments that incorporate ubiquitous medical devices and novel application scenarios. For example, home-based healthcare involves the collection and analysis of data from pervasive sensors (often in real time) to guide therapy or to perform medical interventions. In this article, we address the challenges of data interoperability and regulatory compliance when designing and deploying healthcare applications in a heterogeneous home-edge-cloud environment. We propose the ChainSDI framework that leverages the blockchain technique along with abundant edge computing resources to manage secure data sharing and computing on sensitive patient data. We implement programmable ChainSDI application programming interfaces to facilitate the specification of home-based healthcare services running on a software-defined infrastructure (SDI). This article is a collaboration between computer scientists, medical researchers, healthcare IT professionals as well as healthcare providers with the goal of increasing the availability of SDI infrastructures while meeting the performance and regulatory requirements of healthcare applications. Our prototype demonstrates the feasibility of the framework and serves as a testbed for novel experimental studies in the context of emerging healthcare applications

    Bishop Fulton J. Sheen: America’s public critic of psychoanalysis, 1947–1957

    This paper examines the role of Bishop Fulton Sheen in the popularization of Freudian psychoanalysis in the United States during the 1940s and 50s. Social historians argue that Freudian ideas were pervasive in American culture during this period. While their claim speaks mainly to the impact of psychoanalysis on the cultural elite and college educated, they also suggest that Freudian ideas affected ordinary men and women. In the former case, the group impacted is small and not representative of the population as a whole; in the latter, the evidence is sparse and impressionistic. Neglected in their consideration is the influence of Fulton Sheen whose opinions on Freud reached an audience of 30,000,000 during the height of the popularity of his TV show, Life is Worth Living. Sheen\u27s audience was more inclusive and representative of mainstream America. The negative and highly cautionary view of psychoanalysis he presented to many Americans was contrary to that which was promoted to and embraced by many of the college educated and likely shaped both their views of Freud and psychoanalytic therapy

    Re-thinking the world with neutral monism: Removing the Boundaries Between mind, matter, and spacetime

    Herein we are not interested in merely using dynamical systems theory, graph theory, information theory, etc., to model the relationship between brain dynamics and networks, and various states and degrees of conscious processes. We are interested in the question of how phenomenal conscious experience and fundamental physics are most deeply related. Any attempt to mathematically and formally model conscious experience and its relationship to physics must begin with some metaphysical assumption in mind about the nature of conscious experience, the nature of matter and the nature of the relationship between them. These days the most prominent metaphysical fixed points are strong emergence or some variant of panpsychism. In this paper we will detail another distinct metaphysical starting point known as neutral monism. In particular, we will focus on a variant of the neutral monism of William James and Bertrand Russell. Rather than starting with physics as fundamental, as both strong emergence and panpsychism do in their own way, our goal is to suggest how one might derive fundamental physics from neutral monism. Thus, starting with two axioms grounded in our characterization of neutral monism, we will sketch out a derivation of and explanation for some key features of relativity and quantum mechanics that suggest a unity between those two theories that is generally unappreciated. Our mode of explanation throughout will be of the principle as opposed to constructive variety in something like Einstein\u27s sense of those terms. We will argue throughout that a bias towards property dualism and a bias toward reductive dynamical and constructive explanation lead to the hard problem and the explanatory gap in consciousness studies, and lead to serious unresolved problems in fundamental physics, such as the measurement problem and the mystery of entanglement in quantum mechanics and lack of progress in producing an empirically well-grounded theory of quantum gravity. We hope to show that given our take on neutral monism and all that follows from it, the aforementioned problems can be satisfactorily resolved leaving us with a far more intuitive and commonsense model of the relationship between conscious experience and physics

    Detection of Mercury (II) in Water with Polymer Nanoparticles that Incorporate a Rhodamine B-based Probe in a Lateral Flow Assay Design

    Ionic mercury (Hg2+) pollution is a common problem in low resource areas where unregulated coal burning and small-scale artisanal gold mining are prevalent. These activities pollute surrounding water sources with Hg2+, which can be converted into the more dangerous methyl mercury by bacteria. Methyl mercury then bioaccumulates in the food chain, and people that obtain water or fish from these sources can be exposed to dangerous amounts of mercury. The EPA and WHO limits for mercury in water are 2 and 6 ppb respectively. Many current detection methods that are sensitive enough to detect mercury at these levels are difficult to utilize in areas where mercury pollution is a problem. This is because the instruments involved are expensive and require complex sample preparation and skilled operators. The goal of this research is to design a lateral flow assay (LFA) that will provide a simpler test for mercury that requires little to no sample preparation and produces a visible signal. In this work, three rhodamine B based probes for Hg2+ detection were synthesized and characterized with NMR, IR, UV-Vis, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The best probe (rhodamine B thiohydrazide) was made using a two-step synthesis with 83% and 19% yields respectively. In the presence of Hg2+ the probe absorbed light at 560 nm and had a limit of detection of 90 ± 10 ppb Hg2+ in acetonitrile solution. This probe was then encapsulated in polystyrene nanoparticles, which were analyzed with dynamic light scattering (DLS) and found to have a hydrodynamic diameter of 90 ± 10 nm. The particles were then incorporated into lateral flow test strips and produced a visible signal in the presence of 200 ppb Hg2+
