    An Examination of Science Education in Different Cultural Settings

    This paper investigated how science education is implemented in The Gambia, the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Pennsylvania, particularly as it applies to science curriculum and pedagogy. To compare how science education is implemented in these three different regions, a wide range of data was collected. Interviews were conducted with educators and administrators in both The Gambia and Argentina. Faculty members were interviewed about their thoughts and insights on their experience with science education, and the strengths and challenges they felt were present in their school. While no faculty members were formally interviewed in Pennsylvania, I was able to learn about science education in Pennsylvania based on my attendance in a science education methods course at Elizabethtown College. In addition to personal anecdotes, whenever possible textbooks, assessments, curriculum documents, science standards, and other relevant data were gathered for comparison. The results of this qualitative analysis looked to highlight the similarities and differences that exist between the three locations, recognizing that in most cases, best practice varies given the different cultural backgrounds, materials available, and established educational paradigms. Results also demonstrate that that while there were indeed several differences between the countries stemming from three unique cultures and social settings, many of the programs that have been implemented to promote science education have similar goals. However, science teachers in the United States can adapt methods used in Argentina and The Gambia to better fit the needs of their diverse students

    Crystal structures for a series of bis(acetylacetonato)oxovanadium(IV) complexes containing N-donor pyridyl ligands are reported, namely, bis(acetylacetonato-κ2 O,O′)oxido(pyridine-κN)vanadium(IV), [V(C5H7O2)2O(C5H5N)], 1, bis(acetylacetonato-κ2 O,O′)oxido(pyridine-4-carbonitrile-κN)vanadium(IV), [V(C5H7O2)2O(C6H4N2)], 2, and bis(acetylacetonato-κ2 O,O′)(4-methoxypyridine-κN)oxidovanadium(IV), [V(C5H7O2)2O(C6H7NO)], 3, Compounds 1-3 have the formulae VO(C5H7O2)2 L, where L = pyridine (1), 4-cyano-pyridine (2), and 4-methoxypyridine (3). Compound 1 was previously reported [Meicheng et al. (1984). Kexue Tongbao, 29, 759-764 and DaSilva, Spiazzi, Bortolotto & Burrow (2007). Acta Crystallogr., E63, m2422] and redetermined here at cryogenic temperatures. Compounds 1 and 2 as pyridine and 4-cyanopyridine adducts, respectively, crystallize as distorted octahedral structures with the oxo and pyridyl ligands trans to one another. A crystallographic twofold axis runs through the O-V-N bonds. Compound 3 containing a 4-methoxypyridine ligand crystallizes as a distorted octahedral structure with the oxo and pyridyl ligands cis to one other, removing the twofold symmetry seen in the other complexes

    Because of the important roles noncoding RNAs play in gene expression, their sequence-specific recognition is important for both fundamental science and the pharmaceutical industry. However, most noncoding RNAs fold in complex helical structures that are challenging problems for molecular recognition. Herein, we describe a method for sequence-specific recognition of double-stranded RNA using peptide nucleic acids (PNAs) that form triple helices in the major grove of RNA under physiologically relevant conditions. We also outline methods for solid-phase conjugation of PNA with cell-penetrating peptides and fluorescent dyes. Protocols for PNA preparation and binding studies using isothermal titration calorimetry are described in detail

    Advancing the genetic counseling profession through research: Identification of priorities by the National Society of Genetic Counselors research task force

    To help advance research critical to the achievement of the National Society of Genetic Counselors’ (NSGC) strategic objectives, coordination and prioritization of society resources are needed. NSGC convened a task force to advance research necessary for the achievement of our strategic objectives by reviewing existing society-supported research efforts identifying gaps in current research, and coordinating society resources, the task force was formed in order to coordinate and prioritize society resources to advance research critical to the achievement of our strategic objectives. The task force developed a research agenda outlining high-priority research questions for the next 5 years. The questions are organized into four domains: (a) Genetic Counseling Clients; (b) Genetic Counseling Process and Outcomes; (c) Value of Genetic Counseling Services; and (d) Access to Genetic Counseling Services. This framework can be used to advocate for research and funding priorities within NSGC and with other key research entities to stimulate the growth and advancement of the genetic counseling profession

    Experiments on load-bearing cold-formed steel sheathed studs at elevated temperatures

    This paper assesses the stability and strength of sheathed cold-formed steel studs at elevated temperatures. Short and intermediate-length studs braced with gypsum, fire-rated gypsum, and oriented strand board were subjected to compressive axial load and temperatures ranging from 20 °C to 600 °C. A total of 40 tests were conducted in the steady-state regime, where the studs were first heated, then a compressive axial load was applied until failure occurred. Results show that the load-carrying capacity of the structural members decreases with increasing temperature, as the mechanical properties of the cold-formed steel reduce, and the bracing provided by the sheathing degrades. Local and distortional cross-section buckling failures are observed in the cold-formed steel member. The stabilizing effect and increase of load-carrying capacity attributed to the sheathing at ambient temperature is eventually lost at elevated temperature and the behavior of the sheathed studs becomes similar to the behavior of unsheathed members. Direct Strength Method design equations provided in the U.S. AISI S100 design specification are used with experimentally determined elevated temperature properties to predict the load-carrying capacity of the studs, then compared to experimental results to explore the feasibility of current design methods for performance-based fire design applications

    The Effects of a Price Increase on Confectionery Products

    This research is a case study on the effects of a price increase on confectionery products. The case will follow a major candy manufacturer to unveil how the increase in price has affected the company’s revenue and units sold. The price increase has also made retailers have to break certain psychological price barriers, like $0.99, in order to keep their margins. This research seeks to find the importance consumer place on these price barriers as well as the effect of a price increase on financial performance. This research provides a better understanding of the confectionery business using information from the IRI/Nielson database. Based on the sales and competitors\u27 information for the entire confection category, this study analyzes the company\u27s financial statements trailing the price increase for two consecutive fiscal quarter, so to compare the company’s performance with the others in the same industry. The study is intended to contribute the literature in the price elasticity of a relatively inexpensive and impulsive item
