    A Structured Soccer Program Designed to Aid in the Development of Children with Autism

    Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a disorder characterized by deficits or impairments in social, cognitive, and motor abilities. These developmental deficits often separate children with ASD from their typically developing peers. Children with autism often refrain from or struggle to take part in play. This is because of the deficits they experience and because there are limited opportunities that foster situations for them to be successful in play. Incorporating play into intervention has been shown to be effective with this population. Participation in play allows for motor skill development, social interactions, and often cognitive stimulation. It is necessary to have resources available and programs in place that are exclusively for children with ASD to help them develop social, motor, and cognitive skills. One such program that would be beneficial in doing so is a structured group play program that involves physical activity

    MOS Technology 6502 CPU Emulation

    The MOS 6502 is an 8-bit microprocessor released in 1975 by MOS Technology. It is notable for being wildly inexpensive compared to other microprocessors of the era, and as such, was incorporated in some form or another across important systems of the time, such as the Apple II, Commodore 64, and Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). While 6502s are no longer common in home computers or consoles, updated versions of the processor are still used quite frequently in the embedded systems industry. This paper will go in detail about how to emulate a 6502 microprocessor on a modern computer. The meaning of emulate in this case, is to reproduce the functionality. There is certainly more than way to go about emulating a processor, but this paper is primarily focused on the behavior of the CPU, rather than simulating transistors in software

    Identity Development and Diversity in Fiction

    Psychologists have long pondered what elements are necessary during adolescence in order for an individual to become a mentally healthy and societally productive adult. Identity development is an ongoing process from the early stages of experiencing the world for the first time to the late stages of reflecting on one’s life. The dissection of identity development has led to the organization of stages. Erik Erikson, one of the most influential scholars in understanding human identity development, devised a series of eight stages that occur chronologically throughout a person’s life. Based on these stages, developmental psychologist James Marcia, a clinical and developmental psychologist, focused on adolescent identity development, proposing that it consists of varying degrees of exploration and commitment, including various statuses within the identity development stage. Marcia is Professor of Psychology at Simon Fraser University in Canada; he formed his identity development theory in the 1960s. For this analysis, I will examine the application of Marcia’s statuses to adolescent fictional characters, with an emphasis on the effects of diversity. Using the framework of developmental psychology, several adolescent protagonists of various works of fiction are analyzed, with the following questions in mind: How well does each character fit James Marcia’s model for identity development statuses? How do the characters’ aspects of diversity affect their identity development process? What does all of this imply

    Phasic dopamine (DA) release from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) to the nucleus accumbens plays a pivotal role in reward processing and reinforcement learning. Understanding how the diverse neuronal inputs into the VTA control phasic DA release can provide a better picture of the circuitry that controls reward processing and reinforcement learning. Here, we describe a method that combines intra-VTA cannula infusions of pharmacological agonists and antagonists with stimulation-evoked phasic DA release (combined infusion and stimulation, or CIS) as measured by in vivo fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV). Using CIS-FSCV in anesthetized rats, a phasic DA response can be evoked by electrically stimulating the VTA with a bipolar electrode fitted with a cannula while recording in the nucleus accumbens core. Pharmacological agonists or antagonists can be infused directly at the stimulation site to investigate specific VTA receptors\u27 roles in driving phasic DA release. A major benefit of CIS-FSCV is that VTA receptor function can be studied in vivo, building on in vitro studies

    I Got a New Puppy! The Impact of Personal, Opinion, and Objective Tweets on a Journalist’s and a News Organization’s Perceived Credibility

    This experimental study examined the impact of posting different types of tweets on a journalist’s perceived credibility. Three-hundred-and-eighty-seven participants were randomly assigned into one of three groups. One group saw tweets from a journalist that were about the journalist’s personal life, another group saw tweets from the same journalist that were written objectively about news stories, and the third group saw tweets from the same journalist that contained the journalist’s opinion regarding news stories. Participants who read the personal tweets about the journalist’s life rated the journalist highest in perceived credibility. The perceived credibility of the journalist was ranked significantly lower by participants who read the tweets that only contained the journalist’s opinion. Participants were also asked to rate the credibility of the organization for which the journalist worked. The perceived credibility of the organization was rated significantly higher by those who read the objective tweets. Organizational credibility was rated lowest by those who read the tweets that contained the journalist’s opinion. This study has important implications for journalists who use Twitter and wish to improve their personal and organizational perceived credibility

    A Nonlinear Latching Filter to Remove Jitter from Movement Estimates for Prostheses

    Continuous movement intent decoders are critical for precise control of hand and wrist prostheses. Noise in biological signals (e.g., myoelectric or neural signals) can lead to undesirable jitter in the output of these types of decoders. A low-pass filter (LPF) at the output of the decoder effectively reduces jitter, but also substantially slows intended movements. This paper introduces an alternative, the latching filter (LF), a recursive, nonlinear filter that provides smoothing of small-amplitude jitter but allows quick changes to its output in response to large input changes. The performance of a Kalman filter (KF) decoder smoothed with an LF is compared with that of both an KF decoder without an additional smoother and a KF decoder smoothed with a LPF. These three algorithms were tested in real-time on target holding and target reaching tasks using surface electromyographic signals recorded from 5 non-amputee subjects, and intramuscular electromyographic and peripheral neural signals recorded from an amputee subject. When compared with the LPF, the LF provided a statistically significant improvement in amputee and non-amputee subjects\u27 ability to hold the hand steady at requested positions and achieve movement goals faster. The KF decoder with LF provided a statistically significant improvement in all subjects\u27 ability to hold the prosthetic hand steady, with only slightly lower speeds, when compared to the unsmoothed KF

    ACETA: Accelerating Encrypted Traffic Analytics on Network Edge

    Applying machine learning techniques to detect malicious encrypted network traffic has become a challenging research topic. Traditional approaches based on studying network patterns fail to operate on encrypted data, especially without compromising the integrity of encryption. In addition, the requirement of rendering network-wide intelligent protection in a timely manner further exacerbates the problem. In this paper, we propose to leverage x86 multicore platforms provisioned at enterprises\u27 network edge with the software accelerators to design an encrypted traffic analytics (ETA) system with accelerated speed. Specifically, we explore a suite of data features and machine learning models with an open dataset. Then we show that by using Intel DAAL and OpenVINO libraries in model training and inference, we are able to reduce the training and inference time by a maximum order of 31x and 46x respectively while retaining the model accuracy
