Physical activity and dietary behaviour in women with polycystic ovary syndrome

    No full text
Introduction: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a disorder diagnosed among 4–20% of women ofreproductive age, while the prevalence of co-occurrence of PCOS and insulin resistance is estimatedto be 35–80%. Physical activity and diet are modifiable risk factors for the development of target tissueinsulin resistance. Aim: This study aimed to assess the associations between physical activity levels and eating behaviouramong women with PCOS. Material and methods: The study used data obtained from 40 women aged 20–45 years. A questionnairesurvey was conducted using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and the Food FrequencyQuestionnaire, both of which were made available online in web forums. The study group consisted ofpatients with PCOS and the control group of women without diagnosed PCOS. Results: PCOS was diagnosed on average 3.96 ± 3.09 years before participation in the study. Excessivebody weight was found among f = 0.75 of the women in the study group and f = 0.15 of the women in thecontrol group. Insufficient levels of physical activity are characterised by f = 0.35 for women with PCOS andf = 0.25 for women without diagnosed PCOS. The mean MET-min/week in the study and control groupswas 1087.08 ± 667.06 and 1089.35 ± 777.63, respectively. It has been shown a correlation between highphysical activity and BMI (rS = –0.37; p < 0.05), consumption of wholemeal bread and BMI (rS = –0.45;p < 0.05), and consumption of refined bread and BMI (rS = 0.44; p < 0.05). Conclusions: There are indications for the implementation of education on regular physical activity andproper nutrition among PCOS patients

Sex differences in postural stability indices among competitive swimmers and untrained individuals

Introduction: To compare differences in overall stability index (OSI), anterior/posterior stability index (APSI), and medial/lateral stability index (MLSI) between males and females among swimmers and untrained individuals. Materials and methods: The study recruited 30 (Nmales = 15, age = 21.8 ± 1.4 years old, weight = 70.9 ± 8.7 kg, height = 175.5 ± 7.8 cm) swimmers and 30 (Nmales = 15, age = 20.1 ± 1.4 years old, weight = 71.3 ± 13.5 kg, height = 174.8 ± 11.0 cm) healthy controls. Participants underwent body stability tests on the BIODEX Balance Platform in a two-footed stance, on the right leg, and the left leg. Participants underwent the tests in three 30-sec averaged trials. Compared were OSI, APSI, and MLSI between male and female athletes and controls. Results: OSI, APSI, and MLSI did not differ between sexes among swimmers (p = 0.09–0.92). Females have lower stability indices than males among controls. OSI [1.50 (0.65) vs. 2.00 (1.80); p = 0.004], APSI [0.90 (0.60) vs. 1.30 (1.10); p = 0.02] and MLSI [0.70 (0.40) vs. 1.00 (1.15); p = 0.004] were different between sexes in the controls during two-footed stance. OSI [2.20 (1.15) vs. 3.10 (1.18); p = 0.04] and MLSI [1.10 (0.80) vs. 2.10 (0.90); p = 0.03], but no APSI [1.60 (0.90) vs. 1.70 (1.05); p = 0.10) also differed between male and female controls on right leg standing. Finally, OSI [2.10 (1.30) vs. 3.20 (1.85); p = 0.04) and APSI [1.30 (0.87) vs. 2.20 (1.30); p = 0.01] on left leg standing were significantly lower among females than males controls. MLSI [1.20 (0.85) vs. 1.80 (1.05); p = 0.10] on the left leg did not differ significantly. Conclusions: Untrained females have a significantly lower majority of stability indices than untrained males. Swimmers did not have sex differences between any of the stability indices. Swimming training may mitigate sex differences in postural stability, suggesting its potential role in balance training programs

Genicular artery embolization as an emerging therapy for osteoarthritis — the first case in Poland

    No full text
Osteoarthritis of the knee (OA) is one of the most common disorders of the musculoskeletal system, which is associated with chronic pain and joint dysfunction on one hand, and significant social and economic consequences on the other. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the role of the immune system, including inflammatory processes, in the progression of OA and the possibility of using new therapeutic techniques as the traditional treatment approaches, including pharmacotherapy and surgery, remain insufficient for many patients. Genicular artery embolization (GAE) is a novel therapy aiming to reduce pain by occlusion of aberrant knee neovasculature that corresponds to areas of inflammation, knee pain, and tenderness. The study presents the first case of the GAE procedure in Poland with a 3-month follow-up

Hormonozależny rak piersi w stadium uogólnienia u kobiety w wieku przedmenopuzalnym — optymalny układ pierwszej linii terapii. Decyzje terapeutyczne, skuteczność, nietypowy profil toksyczności

    No full text
W pracy przedstawiono przypadek kobiety w wieku przedmenopauzalnym leczonej skojarzoną terapią rybocyklibem z letrozolem i gosereliną, u której, mimo wygenerowanych nietypowych toksyczności (zespół ręka–stopa), uzyskano sprawną i trwałą korzyść kliniczną.
